Cocoa Canela (Organic)

Bleeegh. I’ve been on the search for a nice chocolate tea. This is not it. I bought this a few months ago and hated it then, but I decided to give it another shot before reviewing it. Oh the regret. At least it gave me a little energy boost, I suppose.

This tastes like diluted spiced hot cocoa. Not even high quality hot cocoa. Just watery chocolate with a little bit of kick. And a dry, powdery aftertaste. I tried salvaging it with some rice milk, but that somehow just made it worse. I imagine it might work well brewed in cow’s milk. I can’t drink that so someone else will have to run the experiment.

this is my get the day started right tea. iced with a matcha shot poured on top it revs me up without any crash afterwards. i love it.

I tried this neat – not bad, a little heavy on the chocolate powder. I added milk and honey. It was surprisingly thin bodied. The flavor was kind of boring and uninspiring. Meh.

When you use enough of this, it’s a satisfying chocolately drink, unlike pretty much every other chocolate tea I’ve tried. I’m not getting the anticipated mate flavor, though. The spiciness of the cinammon is pronounced and might be just a hair too much, but not enough to keep me from drinking it. Especially good on this first snowy day of the season in metro DC.

Since my tea pot broke, I started using the other small tea pot I got for my birthday last year. However, I discovered it leaks when I pour, BOOO! I’m probably going to convince the husband to buy me a new tea pot. I can do it myself, but I’ll probably come back with lots of teas! I’m saving up for big DT, Butiki and Verdant orders.

DRY: Very strong chocolately spicy cinnamon. The tea is coated in a dust of cocoa, oooh yeah!

STEEPED: Murky cloudy dark brown tea, still smelling of spicy chocolate cinnamon.

BTW, i went heavy on the leaves, so 2tsp for a cup of tea because I’m crazy!

TASTE: Straight strong cocoa with a hit of cinnamon that warms down my throat. Really cocoa. Holy cow this is chocolately!
Sweetened, this is really good and pretty much hot chocolate with spicy cinnamon. I can hardly taste the earthy mate though.

There lots of remnants on the bottom of my cup, despite using a DT Steeper, which usually does a good job. The closer I get to the bottom of the cup, the more spicy and grainy the tea becomes. Also gets slightly bitter towards the end of the cup.

WHO’D LIKE THIS TEA: Chocolate lovers who like cinnamon in their cup. Spicy cinnamon tea lovers. CC also doesn’t taste very mate like, good someone who wants to try a mate for the stimulant hit or for someone who doesn’t like the grassy mate taste.

COMMENTS: Phew, I feel VERY awake after drinking that! Overall, amazingly chocolately and I love a good spicy hit and the cinnamon was great! I didn’t like the grainyness at the end of the cup.
I could see this being an amazing latte! OOOh yeah, next time!

This one smells like cinnamon and chocolate. Slightly more like cinnamon than chocolate but still delicious. It’s definitely both cinnamon and chocolate in taste. And something reminding me ever so slightly of eggnog. I may try this as a latte. It’s pretty good, I’m not so sure it’s permanent collection good though. I’ll have to think about it some more as I sip away.

Update: This one didn’t wow me, but it was good. I felt I could make it better somehow so that it can be upgraded. Feels like there’s some potential there.

Trial as a latte: It’s certainly much heartier this way. But the flavour makes it seem less like tea to begin with. I think next time I’ll add a wee bit more milk. There’s hope for this one yet!

I bought this cause it was in the 2 for $5 pre-packs and I’m a sucker for a deal. And for chocolate. This tastes surprisingly mild, like cocoa powder with a dash of cinnamon. It’s alright, but I finished it and considering I’m more happy about freeing up cupboard space than sad about running out of it, I think it’s a pretty good indication that I won’t buy it again. Which may not be option anyways, cause it looks like it’s being discontinued. Ah well, no tears here.

This was from one of my samples from my last order from DAVIDs TEA. I was wondering how well this would taste with the chocolate in it. Chocolate teas don’t always seem to do to well. However, I was pleasantly surprised. Even with out any creamer it was very chocolaty. Plus the cinnamon in it was awesome, not too little, not too much. Just a good amount of cinnamony goodness. Though if your not a fan of cinnamon, you should probably pass this one up. I kinda wish they used a toasted mate instead of yerba.

Overall it was a good tea. Not something I am dying to go out and buy, but not bad by any means. I would recommend it to someone who likes hot chocolate and cinnamon.

Brewing Specifics

Pot: Porcelain
Water: 8oz per steep
Leaf: 5g
Sweetener: just a pinch of light agave

I was very exited when I saw this blend of Cinnamon and cocoa because I LOVE them together. And even better, it’s a maté (witch is great with chocolate)

Cinnamon is strong and fresh but not too spicy and overwhelming.
The cocoa is still there but less proeminent, smooth and delicious: it’s really a great balance between the two.
Its not sugary, a little sweet, rich and also earthy because of the maté.
I decided to drink it bare without sugar or milk and its perfect that way.

I really enjoy this one. I have been drinking it everyday since last week. I just wanted to make sure I really loved it before posting my comments.

This is really rich and I love to have it after lunch. The cinnamon gives it a sweet kick and mixes well with the chocolate. It is just short of drinking a good spiced hot chocolate. Milk would probably make it a full blown rich treat that would make me feel guilty. Not that I don’t already feel guilty by drinking this awesome blend.

The blend is SO dusty because of the cinnamon and cocoa powder that it always leaves my David’s perfect teaspoon covered in a reddish brown.

I had originally gotten 25 grams but will be getting a full 100g tin (probably more) very soon! :)
