From DAVIDsTEA

With their soft green colour, naturally sweet taste and cool, juicy flesh, honeydew melons are basically made for spring. In fact, this delicately perfumed fruit has been a popular standby at spring picnics and dinner parties everywhere from the south of France to ancient Rome. So when we mixed luscious honeydew with tangy kiwi and a hint of papaya, we knew it was gonna be good. Light, fruity and totally satisfying, it’s a fresh new way to sweeten up your spring.

I decided to get a cup of this as an iced tea at work last week when I was craving something sweet, and it totally did the trick. It’s marvellously refreshing and sweet enough to feel like a treat without being cloying or sugary. I found it completely delicious, and will definitely be getting some for summer iced teas. And yeah, I totally thought it was cantaloupe until I looked it up, later…oops. ;)

Out of all the tea in the Spring Collection this one interested me the most, so last time I was in the mall I picked up 25g to try out. It’s tempting to eat the little pieces of candied cantaloupe but for the sake of the final product I resisted.

The tea is sweet on it’s own and has a nice fruity-melony flavour. This one reminds me quite a bit of DT’s Luscious Watermelon tea that they had a few summers back. I bought up a whole bunch and I love using it to make iced tea. I bet this blend will also be fantastic cold.

I arrived home around 10:30 tonight. All went excellently at the Mayo Clinic. The aspirin challenge/desensitization went very well. No reaction today even at high doses of aspirin, so I am considered non-sensitive to aspirin. I’ll be taking 650 mg twice a day for the rest of my life. So, yay! And a little boo, too, because the doctor said it was possible for me to regain my smell, but he believes not. So probably I’ll be plagued by no sense of smell interspersed with brief, vague flashes of scent or taste. Likely when scooping out the cat box or cleaning the moldy leftovers out the fridge.

So now, to the tea. I am beginning to like this one more and more. It is a mellow, sweet infusion. Slightly on the artificial side, but not bad.

gmathis

Sorry about the so-so prognosis, but welcome home!

Maddy Barone

Thanks! I am of course disappointed by the no smelling thing. But I’m breathing well so that’s the really important thing, right?

gmathis

Breathing is good!

Indigobloom

Yay for possibilities! Fingers crossed for you

OMGsrsly

Breathing is really good! Fingers crossed regarding the smell coming back at more opportune times than described. :D

Oooh!

Last tea of the night; cold brewed – and I’m totally into this one. It’s sweet and really fun; though it kind of seems a little more like a summer tea to me.

It’s totally honeydew; but maybe leaning just a little bit towards a slightly unripened honeydew; it’s got that unripe sort of “tang” to it, which is just kind of accented by a sharp kiwi sour note as the start of the sip. It’s a nice sour though; just a little initial tartness, and then fade into yummy sweet melon. Very juicy and refreshing! Maybe just the tiniest bit of papaya? Mmm!

It’s a shame this is so heavy! I swear with each seasonal collection DT puts out a herbal tea that would be pretty affordable if it weren’t so heavy – and that just makes it super hard to justify buying it – and that’s the one I fall in love with every time! I used up almost all of the 25g sample I got for this cold brew. All I’ll be able to brew with the remaining leaf is a small hot cup…

Fjellrev

Love it too! And I totally have to ration it due to its weight.

Plunkybug

This one smells really good, but I have not tasted it yet…just White Nectarine and Strawberry Fields. I will try this one at some point, though.

Hot? Ick. Nast. I could not imagine sipping this one warm. HOWEVER! Brewed double strength and dumped over ice produces gorgeous results. I’ve taken to adding a slice of cucumber to a cold steep and can confess to being somewhat addicted to my creation. I’ll be drinking this all summah. Plus it smells like Midori and that just rules in a 90’s trashy high school girl kinda way.

Sometimes people really suck. I didn’t fall asleep until past 5am worrying about the person who was supposed to come today to buy my sofa. My gut was right. At the last minute, he said that his friend injured his hand and he’d need me to help him move it. Told him I could only load it onto his truck at my apartment, but he expected me to go to his place. And of course he conveniently finds this out right after I reveal my address and apartment number to him. Wow. Because you only know one person in the world who can help you with it?

So now my brain is numb and I don’t feel like doing anything other than anxiously hang around home.

So, enough yakking about me and my unimportant problems, this is the last tea in the spring collection to talk about. I know, I know, it’s an artificial melon flavour, but I really like that! Lately I’ve been into melon-flavoured things, like Melona bars and melon bubble tea, and this has a similar kind of artificial flavouring. It’s not over the top or overly sweet, at least. And we’re talking honeydew kind of melon, not watermelon, as I cannot stand artificial watermelon flavours, on the other hand.

Ok, good job tastebuds for spotting that this is honeydew and not cantaloupe. I can easily tell the difference in flavour of the actual fruits but sometimes their artificial flavour companions can be a little tricky. So yes, at least they put actual honeydew chunks in here and not just rely on melon flavouring.

No kiwi, unfortunately. I got excited when I saw a chunk whilst I was dumping some of the dry “leaf” into my jug, but alas, no beautiful, tart kiwi to be had.

Call me crazy, but I think I’m going to buy more once I finish the 30g I originally purchased.

Ost

Would you say it is similar to Golden Honeydew from Lupicia? Because I want to try this one, but Kinda nervous about it. xD If it’s like Lupicia’s version I will totally buy some, but I have a habit of buying teas I end up hating on accident all the time xD

Fjellrev

I wish I could tell you! I haven’t ordered from Lupicia yet, but can’t wait to do so since so many sound delicious. :)

Ost

Possibly would you be willing to do a small swap? I could send you some Golden Honeydew and maybe you can send me a bit of Melon Drop? I have quite a few Lupicia teas…so Like we can swap more than just one tea if you want. I have plenty to share (:

Fjellrev

That sounds lovely but I’m actually right in the middle of moving and have been holding off on getting involved with any swapping in general for a while now. I hope that is ok!

Ost

That’s fine. Well I have lots of Golden Honeydew anyway, so if you remember my offer around a time that you are in a position to swap, hit me up! (:

sren

Ugh… How frustrating! Sounds like you have pretty good gut awareness :)

Fjellrev

Thanks for understanding, Ost!

Thanks, sren, I don’t know how people can expect others to be so naive!

I picked this one up yesterday as well and i’m glad i did. It was a good cup to enjoy in the evening. That being said, this doesn’t call out to me like some of david’s other herbals so this sample is all i really need. It’s sweet and very much melon like…but in a pinch i’d MUCH rather have lupicia’s golden honeydew :)

Fjellrev

Would you say that’s your favourite melon tea?

Sil

oooh tough call. probably? in part because it’s a herbal so i can drink it whenever. i DO like lupicia’s melon oolong as well…which is saying a lot because i don’t typically like green oolongs

Fjellrev

Oh, interesting. I didn’t know it was a herbal. I mixed it up with their oolong haha. I’ve been getting into melon lately and am wondering what I’m going to do once my Butiki Cantaloupe & Cream is gone. I keep hearing praises about these Lupicia ones. Let’s hope our dollar will smarten up so Canadians can place orders and enjoy life.

OMGsrsly

I can share some melon oolong with you, Fjellrev. If you visit or send an address! I got 100g in the last order.

Fjellrev

Thanks for the offer, but it would really only taunt me if I end up loving it!

OMGsrsly

Haha. :) Even with our dollar so sucky the prices are still pretty on par with davidstea.

Sil

almost placed a lupicia order this weekend in light of the limited editions going away but…i resisted.

OMGsrsly

Aww, Sil! You stayed strong even though I tried to enable you. :)

Pretty tasty; definitely honeydew, but there’s an artificial-ness to it. I’m happy with my sample and that should be it for me.

Awdarn. I don’t like those artificial flavors. I went ahead and ordered 50 grams of this, hoping it would be nice for iced tea. Now that we’re above freezing I’m jonesing for iced tea. I guess I’ll see how I like it.

Lisa Elizabeth

Is the kiwi flavour strong? I’d like to try this but I really hate kiwi flavour.

Kittenna

I don’t recall there being a ton of kiwi, because I would have noticed and enjoyed that! Maddy- how did you like it?

Maddy Barone

It was refreshing. Not a favorite, but I think I’ll be able to drink what I have over the summer without feeling like I have to throw it out.

I drank this as a hot tea and it was pretty interesting. Definitely could not drink large quantities in a row, though – it’s a great honeydew/kiwi taste but after 2 cups I felt a little sick. Could be the artificial flavouring.
