Sunny Citrus

So at my date on Sunday I picked up all the new teas from DT; but I also grabbed two tea infused chocolate bars – this one, and the Key Lime one. This review is for the Sunny Citrus chocolate bar! Part of me thinks that it’s kind of weird I tried the chocolate before trying the actual tea, but there’s not much I can do now to change that, and it least it sort of let me know what to expect when I did have the tea.

So this chocolate bar is milk chocolate; which kind of surprised me I guess. Not that this seems like a bad pairing with milk chocolate, but I think dark chocolate maybe would have worked better. The flavouring is strong though; there’s zero doubt in my mind that they used a good deal of tea to make the bar. Initial thoughts were that it had a very strong lemon-y flavour, but you can also really taste orange as well. It’s very tart, but muted by the creamy, sweetness of the milk chocolate.

There are also lots of “bits” embedded into the chocolate itself. A couple times I bit into large chunks of what looked like candied lemon peel. It added a very interesting texture because it felt like you were biting into a jubejube, which is sort of weird but also wonderful in a chocolate bar. There were also crunchier bits, which I think were either hibiscus petals or rosehips. This was less awesome because they didn’t really chew up so well.

Overall this was a tasty tea chocolate bar! My “rating” for the chocolate version of this blend is probably about a mid-70? Maybe a 74…

This was another from last night that i finished up. There’s a package waiting for me in mail jail tonight, so i wanted to get through a few more of my samples. Plus, i still need to figure out what tea i want for free from David’s from last year. This is ok…just not my favourite. Like many of david’s teas, I’m good with just a few cups and then i don’t need any more.

Sampled this in store yesterday. I’m glad I did, so I could pass on buying any. Tart, hibiscus, citrus. Nothing particularly interesting or delicious about it. I didn’t even feel inclined to finish my tiny sample cup.

Maybe this would be better cold, but hot it was really meh.

Nopenopenopenopenopenopenope

Coldbrewed overnight, brought out an annoying amount of lime, can’t even finish it. Luckily, my wife took one sip and claimed it “really tasty”, so it’s hers now. Blegh.

But, once again, the flavors aren’t ones I enjoy.

The best way to describe this tea would be ‘fruit salad.’ It’s nothing but oranges in the first sip but then the aftertaste and subsequent sips seem to constantly evolve. I don’t believe there’s any mango in it but I was definitely getting hints of mango and pineapple too. As well as the tang of the citrus, there’s some very sweet notes in there as well. It’s very difficult to describe. I’ve only had it hot but I imagine this would be a very pleasant iced tea for sipping on the sunny days that seem so far away right now to us in Eastern Canada!

My first try of any of the tea’s in the new Sunshine collection! Delicious-ness all around. I’m really liking the flavour and even the colour. As it steeped it went from a very bright pink to a lovely shade of red. The orange/citrus flavour followed up by something sweet, I want to say Strawberry but I know that’s just not it. This is certainly giving me what I need to get through the rest of winter’s freezing temperatures. Here’s to hoping the rest of the collection is as tasty :)

I only had a sample of this, so I may change my rating when I have a larger cup. To me, this tastes a lot like Pink Flamingo (and it shares a lot of the same ingredients, so not really a surprise). Which is fine in one sense, because I like Pink Flamingo, but why feel the need to make something new that’s basically the exact same thing? I wish the orange was the main flavour here – DT has done several straight up lemon blends, and I’d love to see a strong orange one. Hopefully in the spring or summer collection.

Dry Leaf Nose: Strong lemon with a tart note.

Liquor: A red brown liquor with a slightly cloudy nature.

Flavour: Tart but a little bit sweet as well. Lemon notes are very prominent!
