Crème Brulée

Mmmmmmmmm perfect dessert tea to lull me to sleep tonight. The creaminess was perfection. I was not expecting that. The aroma was so tempting that my boyfriend looked at me with a smirk and next thing I know he is taking a sip! This must be dream. The first thing he says is “mmmm that’s creamy what is that?” Ha ha any tea that has him wanting more is definitely a success on my list. Thank you Janelle for this sample.

1scant TB for 450mL water, lightly sweetened with stevia, no milk.

I am having a Very Bad Day. Almost four weeks of assorted nuisances have blended, entwined and swollen to create my grotesque today. I am ready to scream. Or cry. But what did the posters in WW2 England say? ‘Keep calm and carry on.’ And what would my war-bride English grandmother say? ‘Cup of tea.’

My nerves are shot, so I figure I need rooibos. Then I remember the new packet of Creme Brulee from David’sTea I thought I might keep on hand for a gift. I, um, opened it. Steeped some.

Mmmmmm, yes, that’s better.

The green rooibos base tastes bright, but not minty or woody as some red rooibos can get, and not dull and grassy like some crappy green rooibos I’ve had. The liquor is a lovely pale brass. The scent is caramelly but not overpoweringly so. The aftertaste is a slight bit woody, but I don’t mind it. Soothing. Very mild. Silky mouth-feel.

The scent out of the bag was strongly chemical. Like, I kind of got burnt sugar, but I also got the artificial notes overpowering it. Maybe it’s a new batch and the chemicals have to settle/dissipate first?

Steep notes: 1.5 tsp. leaf, 8oz water, a splash of milk, below parameters.

Okay, now that it’s brewing any artificial scent has gone away completely. I’m getting a creme brulee smell! So I went ahead and tried it straight and….what is on my tongue GET IT OFF NOW OMG GROSS.

Seriously? Is that green rooibos? That nasty herby taste in my mouth passes for a tisane?
I need some milk in this STAT if I have any chance of finishing it.

Thankfully the milk seems to take away whatever offending flavor the rooibos imparted, though knowing it is lurking beneath the surface is really ruining the experience for me. Still – creamy caramel burnt sugar is really good. And at least it was fixable – though I probably won’t seek this one out again since it is virtually unpalatable in its natural form.

Two more rooibos to go – man I hope they’re more like the Birthday cake than this one.

I received a sample of this with my last DavidsTea order and I have to admit, I’m pretty disappointed in this tea. For one, it doesn’t taste a thing like creme brule and the flavors don’t really make a whole lot of sense. It tastes like a really watered down version of DavidsTea’s Creme Caramel. Pretty mediocre and I’m glad I didn’t spend any money on this.

Mmm – this tastes sugary sweet and almost creamy. Definitely a dessert tea through and through. Reminds me a lot of the Creme Caramel Rooibos, as I would expect it would, although a bit toned down on the sweet. I steeped this a little longer than I probably should have but it doesn’t seem to harm it – probably makes it taste better, actually.

I abstained from drinking tea yesterday due to burning my tongue on it badly the day before…I have a feeling I’m gonna be making up for it today by drinking lots. :P

The best thing about this tea was the green rooibos. The creme brulee wasn’t there so much but it was still quite yummy. Sample from Alysha

This tea is not my favorite. Doesn’t remind me of creme brulée at all…

I’ll drink it anyway because all my desert tea are actual tea (black or green) and this one have rooibos as a base so it is ok for an evening tea. Not one I’ll restock.

The flavor is really weak, but it is ok if I add cane sugar and milk. OK but not amazing.

I think I may just be really difficult with desert tea. I still need to find one I find spectacular. Any suggestion?

Something I love about Rooibos tea is that I can just leave them in the water forever and they never get bitter or overpowering. Which is great, because one of my glass strainers practically demands that the tea be left in. I got it from work! Part of my company designs promotional products for other companies to hand out—etc, and they recently got a sample for a double-walled glass tea strainer that companies can put their logos on. Because I’m the resident tea drinker it was given to me to test out! I love company perks when there is tea involved! (and the strainer isn’t too bad, either!)

This particular tea is great on its own, with lots of flavour and sweetness. It reminds me a little bit of Buttered Rum, by David’s tea. It has a similar taste, but it’s like it’s red tea cousin. Quite nice! I liked it, very much.

Dry Leaf Nose: Creamy with hints of rooibos.

Liquor: Golden red colour with notes of crème brûlée.

Flavour: Very creamy with a rooibos background. Naturally sweet and aromatic.
