Sipdown

A minty tea with fruit. The color of this tea is a bit murky now and makes it hard to see the glitter unless you put it in something clear. Most people would probably love this tea but I am not the biggest fan of mint so I drink it but don’t love it. I do like it well enough iced where the mint helps with the cooling sensation. This is a year past date, but the mint is still quite strong. The big berries don’t appear to have suffered.

tea-sipper

huh, rather than expecting most to love this blend, I think they would expect to dislike it, but once they hesitantly tried it, they would like it. (See also: ham & pineapple pizza.)

ashmanra

I love anything-and-pineapple pizza! Ham, pepperoni, veggies…it’s all good!

tea-sipper

ha, good to know you are also of the pineapple crew, ashmanra. :D

ashmanra

tea-sipper: I saw a recipe for a beloved German snack called Toast Hawaii and made it because I figured if I liked pineapple on pizza I would like it. Basic recipe is quite adaptable but is a piece of toast, place cheese and a slice of ham on the toast and place in oven to melt the cheese. Top with a ring of pineapple and a maraschino cherry in the middle. It really is good! You can use jam instead of the cherry or leave both out. You can use bologna or a different meat. The key is toast, melted cheese, meat, and pineapple. Even Ashman (GASP!) liked it.

tea-sipper

oh wow, thanks for that tip. I will have to try this “instant ham pineapple pizza” at some point!

ashmanra

YouTube and Google tell all about it. It was popularized by a tv chef but is basically a riff from a wartime Spam sandwich recipe!

I like this one, although I initially found the smell off-putting (black currants + mint)! I ended up adding milk to my last cup, and not only did it work but it tasted better than the pot of Santa’s Secret that my parents were drinking (PGGB has more heft and dimensions). So weird (in the best possible way).

I know it’s a gimmick, but I also appreciate the glitter here.

I hated the smell of this one but liked the taste ha ha. And it’s nice that the glitter is restrained and doesn’t make a mess everywhere like some glittery teas!

Martin Bednář

I do not recall this being with glitter at all :O

derk

The glitter was not overdone and was difficult to see because of the swampy brew.

Crowkettle

For the life of me, I could never remember the glitter between sessions. I may as well have been experiencing “the shimmer” for the first time every time I made up a cup (cue: "oh, yeah – the glitter!) D:

It is such a tea.

Sipdown! (40 | 314)

This is an interesting one.

I really dislike the smell of it when it’s steeping, it’s like the biggest wet rag ever ha ha… Luckily, that doesn’t carry over to the taste. I actually quite like the combination of the syrupy blackcurrant and cool peppermint together, it’s sort of a dark forest fruits and evergreen vibe.

The color is weird and was quite inconsistent for me. They claim it “brews bright green” but mine was usually some variation of very dark brown with some swampy green-blue going on. I’m not a fan of glittery teas, but I really liked how this one was well-restrained, and the cup looked glittery but I couldn’t see the glitter at all in the dry leaf, and it didn’t make a mess of everything it touched.

Sadly this last cup is mostly just a peppermint black tea, I’m not getting the currant at all. But still, will consider adding this one if I happen to be making a B&B order in the future.

Yes, this one is a fun oddball!

I suppose oddball makes sense given the inspiration! :P

I have some Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster mouthwash chews that I can’t bring myself to use because then they will be gone!

I’m game. Sparkly tea will always get my attention…black is still a weird colour for tea though! Though this is less offputting to me than the brighton rock one, maybe because of the black tea giving it more of a warm tone. I like the smell a lot, mint and blackcurrant is weirdly nostalgic. The brew itself is…mediocre. I don’t dislike it, but it just does not have that wow-factor for me. but it shimmers!

I’m still not 100% sure if I enjoy this blend or not. I mean, I really like the jammy but still a little bright and tart black currant notes. In fact, the reason I picked this one out to drink was because I was craving this specific black currant flavour so much – and while the cooling peppermint is a little strangely juxtaposed against the black currant it’s not unpleasant and the fact it’s a bit weird actually appeals to me because it keeps me super engaged while drinking the cup.

I think the thing that throws me off is something that feels sourceless, and it’s this kind of aggressively “flat tasting” undertone/finish that detracts from the freaky weird dance of mint and currant. It’s a shame.

I love the dark blue, almost black color that this brews up. I didn’t know how I felt about this flavor combination, but it tastes better than I’d imagined. The berry flavor is mild, and the mint fits well with it. However, the mint is the overwhelming flavor, which doesn’t really seem right for a tea of this name. You’d expect the flavor to be a lot crazier. It’s mainly mint, and I’d sooner choose many other mint blends over this one. Thanks to amandastory516 for sending this!

gmathis

I needed a “Hitchhiker” fix recently—flicked on the movie and off my brain :)

AJRimmer

I know what you mean! I haven’t read the series in probably 14 years or so, but I’ve been reading his Dirk Gently series lately, which has been fun.

tea-sipper

YES to both.

Haha, whoa.

The leaf is detritus. The liquid is stagnant swampwater. The flavor is the smell of the musty edges of a swamp complete with the tastes of tangy black currant and crisp mint that can grow in such moist locations.

If this tea didn’t have the novelty reference to The Guide, I don’t know what my gut reaction would’ve been but this is freaking brilliant. Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster transports me back to my swamp work ten years ago.

I had to put this one in! It is so crazy, yet quite good.

It is crazy and I’m happy I get to revel in it’s weirdness.

Mastress Alita’s sipdown challenge January 2nd: National Science Fiction Day Tea #1

additional notes: Drinking this one as part of the funsy day sipdown challenge. For one of my favorite geek things: Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy! This is still a stunningly odd tea, both in flavors and appearance and it really WORKS for Hitchhiker’s Guide. I thought I’d love to hate this blend, but it’s really growing on me. I’m glad I took a gamble on it. I think I’ll raise the rating from a 78.

Courtney

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is so fun. I need to find the time to re-read them!

Mastress Alita

I really need to re-read them too… I have the five-book “trilogy” on the shelf in my Geek Den (why yes, when I moved I created a Geek Den… doesn’t everyone?!)

Courtney

Haha I also have the trilogy XD, and a Geek Den sounds amazing!

Mastress Alita

My bookcase (filled with my sci-fi/fantasy PBs, imported Japanese artbooks/manga, and translated manga) is in there, all my geeky plushies, and an old CRT TV with a Nintendo, SNES, and PSX hooked up. I also call it the “Retro Room” haha! (The rest of the room is filled with cat stuff that mostly goes unused, because cats).

I have never read Dirk Gently, but was going through my external HDD recently and noticed I have one of those short 3 episode seasons of a BBC version of that. Perhaps I’ll watch it!

tea-sipper

AH! You have a geek den! awesome. :D

derk

This one surprised me!

Lexie Aleah

I never read the Dirk Gently book either but liked the BBC series.

Mastress Alita

I watched the BBC series today and really enjoyed it!

Lexie Aleah

Such a shame it was cancelled

Martin Bednář

I took a pouch on their Boxing Day sale! I remembered how much I liked it. Can’t wait for it.

To be honest, I haven’t read The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy but there are so many books waiting for me. I will give it a try and maybe with cuppa of this.

tea-sipper

I hope you like the book, Martin!

Okay, lazy person here again.
I took 1 teaspoon and – grandpa.

Dry leaf smells strongly peppermint with little (but noticable) blackcurrant. When brewed, it turns blue-green colour. Yep, again they have added blue pea.

The brew was very minty in aroma, but blackcurrant tartness was certainly there. When sipped, it was refreshing and fruity. Berry fruity. I had even one whole black currant berry there, so I crushed it with spoon and that was value adding! It was really fruity with minty freshness.

I thought about adding a tea spoon of sugar, but I did not. The berry added exactly what was needed there I think. Some fresh fruit taste.

In conclusion, it was bit weird – but rather surprising. I expected some combination which I could not drink, but in fact, it is very tasty. Nice refreshing drink for summer.

It’s good to hear this weird combination of flavors is surprisingly tasty — but Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters should be much much weirder. I asked about funny books in another tasting note, and The Hitchhiker’s Guide is one of the funniest.

Martin Bednář

IMHO, black tea with sprinkles, black currant and mint sounds really crazy.
