From Harney & Sons

Our Organic Assam is a rich, full leaf, medium bodied black tea. It has a slightly lighter liquor, with sweet honey flavor.

I got a bag of this as a sample with my last order and decided to make this my morning tea today. First, I snipped open the little pyramid bag and dumped the tea into my metal strainer because I just learned those bags are made of nylon and the though of dumping plastic into very hot water I would be drinking squicked me out.

I’m not as big of a fan of strong black teas as I used to be, but this is still a very nice tea. It’s definitely stronger than I’m used to these days, after switching to greens and oolongs, but it was exactly what I needed after one too many nights of staying up too late playing computer games (DARN YOU STEAM SUMMER SALE), and then being woken up too early by hungry felines.

This tea should get a few cups out of one spoonful.

I was expecting this to be quite sharp, but it’s very smooth and and a little bit sweet. I’m going to have trouble picking my default black now that it’s entered the fray!

Devon Bartholomew Advent Day 13

I’m really enjoying this stretch of straight black teas! Surprised I haven’t tried this one before; but if I did, I clearly never logged it in Steepster. This is much smoother than many of the Assams I’ve tried; I detect no bitterness or astringency even after a 4-mintue steep. However, it is intensely flavorful and malty and I think it would hold up well to milk. I feel like I’m detecting a bit of smokiness as well…not sure if that native to the tea or cross-contamination? Either way, I’m quite enjoying this cup!

I may have to try this one. That sounds good!

Having passed a sufficient amount of my day drawing in my notepad at my desk waiting for work to come across it, my dehydrated carcass has finally pulled itself back to my apartment. This organic assam found its way into my possession as a sample stowed away in my last order and should be a suitable restorative with which to souse my wilted corpse and transmute it back into the vivacious grape it never was.

Though Irish Breakfast was perhaps my original love, this was in the days of milk, excessive sugar, and naivety. That said, my apprehensions find no footing in this nostalgic cup. A dark, malty aroma evokes brown bread and dried fruits, promising a stark breakfast blend, and the taste is the venom you suck out of the wound after a tree bites you. There’s a caramelized and unrefined sweetness in the mouth that decries the taint of added sugar. Mildly astringent, it leaves the mouth reminiscent of a crusty, toasted rusk that I can only imagine would gratefully sop up a dash of milk but which, being without any milk, I find stands pleasantly on its own, if not aching for the complement of a little plum or blackcurrant jam. Glimpsing over Steepster’s flavor profile of this one, I can’t help but notice “leather” amongst those enumerated and must accede there is a character to this tea not unlike strips of pan-fried suede. I guzzle the last swig no less withered than I began but slightly more grizzled – this is a tea I would dip in coffee.

Sample that came with a recent order. This is a really nice tea. It’s hearty and malty and tasty with milk. It’s quite a smooth warm cup. I hope they send this one as a sample again! I unfortunately don’t drink enough caffeinated tea to justify buying a tin.

Grabbed a single sachet from the TTB 2022.
This one brewed up nicely fruity and malty for an easy travel cuppa. Not astringent for a 5 minute brew in about 16 oz of water. It’s nice to be able to count on a good cup of tea in stressful travel times as I’ve been stuck in Denver for a while :(

Bought this in late 2020. Used a teaspoonful in a paper t-sac with 8oz boiling water. The medium-chop leaves brew up pretty quick to give a nice medium “red” liquor. Brisk and strongly Assamic, this gives a good maltiness and caramel flavor in a single steeping. This is a good wake-up brew for me and it’s enjoyable. I don’t give a hoot about the “organic” nonsense, but I like the flavors and aftertaste. A classic middle-of-the-road Assam tea, affordably priced. A novice can drink a few cups of this and compare it with a Ceylon black to quickly learn the major differences.

I let this Harney sample sit for weeks because it’s a rare desire for a single cup of tea. Low or no-caff options, sure, but but caffeinated black tea.

Well worth the wait, this Assam was rich and flavorful. Deliciously malty with an edge of honey. I’m quickly becoming a fan of Assam tea, and this well-balanced variant is just right for any time of the day.

I am glad you like it! I haven’t tried this one. The organic English Breakfast is just dreadful to me. It is probably the only Harney Tea I dislike, other than part of the decaf line. I do like the one called just Decaffeinated. I like decaf Midsummers Peach and other flavored ones, but some of the decaf black teas tasted washed out to me.

Got a sample of this in my last H&S order. I’m enjoying it much more than I expected, because I usually don’t find assam all that appealing. It’s very smooth and has a slight cocoa note.

Unfortunately H&S sent me DECAF tea though instead of regular, so THAT has to be sorted out. No way can I drink decaf.

I had a sample sachet tea bag of this Organic Assam. It has a pleasant aroma and an earthy taste. It is a good cup of tea if you are looking for an Assam.
