From Eco-Cha Artisan Teas

The producer of this tea is employed by the Yu Chi Township Tea Research Extension Station (TRES) and has consistently won gold medal prizes in each of the Black Tea Competitions in this area. He is a leading figure in his field and his knowledge and expertise of black tea cultivation in Taiwan is virtually unsurpassed. In recent years, he has formed a cooperative of 5 fellow tea producers that all follow the same standards of production. This allows these farmers to maintain their small, family-run farms at high quality, artisan standards while meeting demand for larger quantities of tea.

Flavor: Subtle hints of clove, cinnamon and mint. Full-bodied, complex. Substantial brew.

Garden: The maker of this tea is employed by the Yu Chi Township Tea Research Extension Station and his factory produced the winner of the 2011 Black Tea Competition in this area. Cold brewed this since I had such bad luck with it hot. 1 pkg. in 14 oz. water in a mason jar, chilled overnight (24 hours total, because I forgot about it – oops).

There is more of a honeyed, woody note when cold, and its sweeter. Cold brewing took care of the astringence, which I figured it would. But now there’s kind of a smokiness??? Where did that come from and WHY IS IT HERE? Ugh, I hate smoke.

Nope. This one is a miss for me. I can’t overlook bitterness and I really really can’t overlook smoke. Oh well – at least it’s a sipdown!

Not a big fan of this tea. I did not sense the notes of “cinnamon, clove, and mint” that were promised. Instead, I smelled, and tasted, an overwhelming flavor of spinach. Unfortunately, I’m not a fan of spinach either. No better luck on the second tasting either. I hope the other teas I received in this month’s shipment are better.

I liked this tea a lot more than I thought I would. Anything that lists “cinnamon and clove” immediately makes me worry, because heavily spiced teas are rarely something I enjoy.

However, this is a subtle cup. I found myself savoring the flavor. Light, slightly astringent finish, absolutely gorgeous red liquor (so glad I have clear teacups for this one), and I noticed that my scratchy throat that I get after dusting went away much faster than usual after sipping this blend, which is an added bonus. (Am saving my second Steepster Select packet for an afternoon when my throat is itchy again to see if that was coincidence or not. It’s just a soothing cup either way, so good to have if you’re feeling a bit tired after working!)

I did like this tea because it had such a complex character. I will try shorter steeps for the next sample. My first cup reminded me of a bitter Assam without the bitterness. There was a slight metallic taste, as well as mint at the end. The second cup was much weaker, but the metallic taste was gone, leaving a mild mint behind
