79 Tasting Notes
This is very… “earthy”. And peppery. And wee bit metallic. I don’t really have much to say, I feel like I’m having a completely different tea from the other reviews. No sweetness that’s for sure. It’s not unpleasant, but I’ve had other black teas I like a lot more, so I doubt I’d restock this.
Is the slightly metallic taste an interpretation of astringency?
I got a sample of this with my Teavivre order. It’s nice, light and easy to drink. I don’t get much cocoa, which seems to be the general consensus on this, though might be because I’ve been drinking Teavivre’s Fengqing Dragon Pearls which give me a major cocoa vibe by comparison. This is a lot lighter, sweet, bready, and a bit peppery to me. Not my favourite from Teavivre, but it’s a nice sip.
I drank this straight initially, but found it kind of… dirty tasting? It was definitely bitter, but the first thought in my head was that it tasted dirty. This benefits big-time from some milk (almond) and sweetener (sugar). I also found I liked it much more as it cooled, but that’s something I often find. It’s decent, but not particularly strong, so I’ll probably be sticking to other teas for those days I crave coffee. Though, if you prefer a milder coffee flavour, this could do the trick!
Preparation
I like this a lot more than I thought I would. I was surprised by the tartness, which in retrospect is kinda stupid considering it is cranberry and orange. Neither dominates, and I don’t know if it’s just a mental thing because of the name, but there it does have the feel of a baked yummy. I’m not sure where that would be from…? Anyway, don’t know if I’d keep this religiously stocked, but I’ll enjoy it while it’s around! Definitely a nice evening cup.
Apple. Apple, apple, apple. And poor peanut butter, flailing around desperately behind the apple, just enough to be noticed. Maybe my pouch had weird proportions, maybe my tastebuds are broken, I don’t know, but this just is waaay too tart to be a peanut butter cup. It doesn’t taste bad, it just doesn’t taste like a peanut butter cup to me, and isn’t something I’d get more of.
Cold steeping some overnight, maybe that’ll do it justice.
EDIT: Cold steeping did nothing! Tasted the same, too tart, not particularly nutty. So sad, I was really looking forward to this one.
I decided to polish off my tin of this since the fall teas are in stock and I can refill it now. Normally I just drink this with just a bit of honey, but today wanted to try something a bit different. I’d hoped to make an almond milk latte of some sort with it, but was out of almond milk. So I started making it like I normally do, only to have the epiphany midway that I had some almond milk in the camper fridge. … Well, I wasn’t far off mark, it was actually coconut milk (it said ALMOND FRESH and then quietly below “coconut milk”. Bastards!) So I kinda winged it. I added about 1/2 tsp of brown sugar and frothed up the coconut milk. It was about 1:3 coconut milk to water. Yumm! I don’t know if I can go back to having this without the additional coconut milk, it added some dimension that I hadn’t really realized it was lacking before. Delicious! Still wanna try with the almond milk though.
Preparation
I can’t stress enough how much I suck at picking apart the various flavours in a straight tea, so I won’t even try to go there. But what I do know is that I love this. And it can tolerate my habitual over-steeping, which is always a good quality. I don’t really get the taste of cocoa in this, but a feeling of it, if that makes any sense. Like it’s a dark, rich, smooth taste that is not exactly cocoa, but somewhat similar to it in feeling. Like a cousin to cocoa. Or something. Behold my eloquence!
Either way, great cup, so far everything from Teavivre has been a delight. Will order again once I run out!
I feel like I just don’t particularly have a taste for oolong teas. The maple in this was fantastic, but that oolong aftertaste just isn’t something I’m crazy about. It isn’t that I drink an oolong and thing it tastes bad, I just always feel like I’d much rather it be a black tea instead. Sigh. If you like maple and oolong though, this is probably perfect.
