I found that this tea was not as good as I’d hoped. It has light smokey tones and a floral taste aroma. I also found for the price of the is it is lacking in quality however it would be nice to add to any connoisseurs collection.
Preparation
Ancient tea from my one and only (?) Teaopia experience. This has since become available from Citizen Tea, so I really need to finish off this tin so I can justify buying more (I actually think I did buy more, but possibly only a sample… not entirely sure, though).
Anyhow, I had this a few weeks ago and the experience was quite subpar – very little flavour yet astringent (from overleafing). However, yesterday’s cup was satisfying, though still light in flavour. I would definitely love a fresh batch!
Oh man. Just made the BEST mug of this, ever. In addition to the delicious roasty oolong, there’s a wonderfully caramelly flavour tonight. I must have done something correctly, haha. Only downside is that I do have to use a lot of tea to make this taste good – probably 4 tsp for a travel mug (and I’ve been known to use more). I’m getting low on this… it will be a sad day when it runs out :(
It’s not a flavour profile I’m likely to get sick of, because it’s desserty/roasty, but it’s not something I’d drink all the time necessarily. And yeah. So good. And decently priced when I bought it on sale!
The only time I went in there was when I picked up this tea, haha. There was no Guelph location, so I made the scary drive to Kitchener to go there :P
Another Teaopia tea requiring overleafing. I’m pretty pleased with this one today though, in spite of the fact that the marshmallows certainly didn’t melt fully even though I steeped this one as indicated. Eh well. The aroma is deliciously sweet and nutty (kind of like Creamy Nut Oolong, which I stupidly neglected to save a sip or two or for comparison). The tea is also similarly somewhat sweet and nutty. I’m fairly certain that this tea is the sweeter of the two though. It’s definitely quite weak if steeped as indicated – I used 2 heaping teaspoons of tea for about a 10 oz. mug, and it’s acceptable, but the base tea is a bit weaker than I’d personally really like. Decent tea, not fabulous but certainly tasty and comforting!
ETA: This does not re-steep well. Ick.
Preparation
This is a backlog from yesterday afternoon, when I made my first-ever visit to Teaopia! Picked this one up for 50% off, plus a couple other teas (not on sale).
I’ll need to write a proper review later, but in spite of this tea smelling pretty delicious (reminded me a bit of Creamy Nut Oolong, perhaps some of the same flavourings?) and being chock full of ultra-mini marshmallows, I hardly got any flavour from it. And I used a LOT of tea! And then used another 1.5 tsp because I couldn’t taste much. Very disappointing. I hope it was a taste bud issue. Either way, I have TONS to experiment with now….
(Ok, I just tried some of yesterday’s tea that was still in my Timolino, and it was better than I remember. So I have hope for next time, although I did use a LOT of tea for that infusion. And, the mini marshmallows left my infuser rather grungy, which was irritating to clean.)
Preparation
Romantic. Invigorating. Fantasy.
My top three words to describe this pot of green tea. Steep this tea with a loved one. Enjoy the invigorating taste. & escape to your fantasy. Love Spell is a mixture of papaya chunks, coconut chips, red sugar hearts, pineapple bits, safflower petals, and fruit flavours. The appearance of the tea is simple with a hint of love from it’s heart shaped red sugar.
In my opinion, how a tea smells will let you know how it will taste. When opening the package for the first time there was a blissful scent escaping. I thought right away that this tea would be an exciting experience for the much needed taste I desired. I’ll admit, I thought it smelled a lot better than the actually taste itself, but I was still amazed at this lovely green tea combination.
To prepare the tea, I steeped the loose tea leaves directly in warm water for about 3 minutes in my Tea Master also from Teaopia. I feel this allowed the leaves to release more flavours and give a richer blend. Typically, green tea is drank with nothing extra added into it. Love spell has the perfect sweetness already because of the sugar hearts that cast a spell for you to fall in love with the tropical beverage. A bonus feature for this tea is that if a hot drink loses its appeal for you during the hot summer season, this one would be delightful chilled over some ice with a few slices of fresh fruit floating in the pitcher.
I seem to feel like my afternoon yesterday became a bit better after indulging in some love spell. It had the perfect hint of energy to provide the consumer with it’s fruity flavours. Drinking the tea helps you sit back and think of a hot vacation getaway on a Caribbean island. A perfect time to daydream and visit your fantasy place. Only to step back into reality after the last drop in your teacup.
Preparation
Drunk plain, this tea has a tartness that is not wholly unpleasant, but it is somewhat short on flavour and long on caffeine. I have tried two 2-minute steepings, but the second one is disappointingly watery, so I have settled on one 3-minute steeping to be drunk with milk.
No tasting notes? I guess this one is that boring, huh?
I’m not feeling well, so I’m drinking cup upon cup of this with a bit of honey. I’ve always liked plain raspberry leaf as a “wellness” tea – it re-infuses decently, you can steep the crap out of it, and it’s so light that a little bag of it goes a long way. I bought this from Teaopia way back when, and it still seems fine – not stale or anything. Admittedly, it looks like grass clippings, and how do you know if grass clippings have lost a lot of flavour? Still, I’ve been told that raspberry leaf keeps very well, and it seems to taste about the same to me!
It’s kind of bland, I guess, but if you’re drinking nothing but this, it seems tastier after a while. I’m guessing that’s because the memory of more exciting teas simply fades from your mind.
…No, seriously, this is very simple and comforting to drink. Very hydrating as well! Yesterday was the first Saturday in a while that I didn’t go home from work with a dehydration headache. (Yes, I know, that’s really stupid when you work in a liquid store, but weekends are usually so busy that I don’t get a chance to drink much as it is, and then I usually end up drinking something with a lot of caffeine and sugar, so that doesn’t help.)
Even given how light it is, I still appear to have used up at least 25 of my original 50 grams. I really need to find where to buy plain raspberry leaf loose now, because I don’t want to give this up, and I don’t want to resort to raspberry leaf TEA BAGS! /snob
(It needs to be a place that takes Paypal…anyone know of one?)
I should note that this is awesome to just put in the cup and sip through a bombilla as well, and just keep topping up the cup until it’s tasteless to get the most goodness from the leaves. A bit of a pain to clean, but hey. No pain, no gain.
Edit: Oh yes, and I got a huuuge haul from DT the other day that I’m excited about! I should have time in the next couple of days to try some saaamples!
Preparation
After posting this, it suddenly occurred to me that the Banff Tea Co. nearby might have some, and they do! And they accept Paypal! But 100g is the minimum purchase, oh dear. That’s so much leaf…
If there’s a whole foods or other health food store or co-op near you, they may sell raspberry leaf in bulk with other medicinal herbs.
Yep, I found some in a local organic health food store, but only in bags. I really can’t imagine the leaf would even be as effective in bags…? Maybe I’m wrong. I think shipping from Banff might be cheaper (and they also have a asthma tea I’d like to try), but I really don’t know that I need that much.
Indigobloom Thank you for this sample!
I am loving it this morning as my wake up tea!
A really excellent cherry amaretto flavor and the cherry is well done – not medicinal!
I do wish it re-steeped a little better but on flavored tea I find the resteepability to only be around 50% regardless of what company the tea comes from so its not a shock or anything that it does not resteep too well.
The flavor in the resteep is there but very thin.
Regardless – one of the best cherry amaretto flavors I have come across and I do love cherry amaretto teas!
Thanks again indigobloom!
Decided that this will be a travel mug tea until it’s finished off. Not overly fond of it – it’s somewhat peachy, but not overly flavourful, and the base is just ok. I seem to be pretty picky about peach in my teas, for whatever reason.
So… I don’t think I liked this much the first time I had it, so you’d think that about a year later, I’d like it even less. Well, you’d be wrong. I actually really enjoyed the cup of this I had – I was getting true, delicious peachy flavour along with the oolong, and I even resteeped twice, both times getting a very tasty cup of peachiness (it faded in the second, but the oolong must have some peachy characteristics as well). Happy news, because that means this will be an excellent travel mug tea, which usually means it gets used up in fairly short order, since travel mugs are twice the size of my normal cups (oh, did I mention that I now have 5 Contigo mugs and 3 Timolinos? And a mug that plugs into my car? And those are just the quality ones…)
Anyhow, yum!
Preparation
Hmm. It seems I’m really not too big of a fan of Teaopia, so I’m not so crushed that they’re gone… This one’s another big miss for me. It sounds absolutely divine, but the flavour is weak and slightly fruity. In the aftertaste I can taste unsweetened fuzzy peach; perhaps it’s meant to be drank with sugar, but that’s a black mark for me. I can’t really taste the oolong at all, even though there’s clearly a lot in there. Bleh. Well, it’s not terrible, it’s just really, really boring. What a bummer. I’m glad I didn’t waste too much money at Teaopia; companies with small sample sizes are definitely the way to go.
Preparation
Yeah I’ve never been much of a fan of Teaopia either. They were my first loose leaf, and part of the reason why it took me many years to get on the loose leaf train. I just find a lot of their blends lack flavour, or taste pretty similar. And for whatever reason it really irks me when tea stores won’t sell you sample sizes. If your product is good, people will be back for more! It strikes me as kind of shady to make customers buy a bigger quantity right off the bat.
Oh…. I should have known that the hibiscus would ruin this one :( The dry tea smells just like sangria, and is oh so sweet and winey and delicious, but steeped up, it’s a whole host of tart, overwhelming hibiscus (with a background of fruity flavours, and a definite citrus twist). And that’s only with a three-minute infusion. Think of the horror it could be at 5 minutes. Or more! It was certainly still drinkable, for sure, but as a newly realized hibiscus-disliker, it’s a bit much. I tried sweetening it with a bunch of sugar, and the result (while hot) was a bit too reminiscent of vomit for my liking. I left the cup sit while I went to work, and drinking it now, it’s actually really not so bad. Tastes much, much more like sangria. The hibiscus is tamed a bit, so the result is fruity and citrusy, with a bit of a fruity wine flavour. So, lesson learned, this one’s best for icing, with sweetener. (However, I’d much prefer to get rid of it, so if anyone’s interested….?)
Preparation
This is stinky.
Herbally, Chamomile, Licorice, Mint type stinky.
But as far as Herbals go – this is pretty decent. Perhaps it’s the addition of the apple or maybe the vanilla…regardless…it seems to work well.
Pretty good!
This has to be my favorite chocolate tea. I’m now beating myself up for not buying more when Teaopia went out of business!
At first I steeped this tea for too long, and hated it, but little under a month ago I tried it again and have been obsessed with it…This is now my favorite tea taking the place of the apple pie tea from Teaopia!
Thanks Tattooed_tea!
I love the little marshmallows in the tea. Except I ate them halfway through steeping the tea D: I’ve heard good things and bad things about this tea so I’m excited to try it… ok here goes first sip..
Hmm… Definitely different. I’m getting a little bit of the graham cracker, a tiny bit of chocolate and nothing really of the marshmallow (most likely because I ate them..). I’m getting a lot of hazelnut and other nutty flavors. Meh, it’s more of a chocolate/hazelnut tea to me.
