9 Tasting Notes
My favorite of the Teas for Travelers sample! I’d never tried hojicha before, and I tend to prefer steamed greens to roasted greens, but the smokiness of the tea blends so well with the apricot and citrus. Just awesome! The rest of the sample set was dwarves (and Bilbo!) which are largely black teas, and while they’re pretty great, I think I should branch out into her elvish blends if this is an indication…
Preparation
Pretty eehhhhhh, tastes like a dozen other fruity teas. Could potentially add a bit of a boost to an iced tea blend, perhaps. Teavana tends to use it as a filler with their more expensive teas to create upsellable blends (ie: Jasmine Dragon Pearls), but the overly fruity flavor drags any pairing into a back alley and unsubtly does away with it.
Preparation
Gingery without burning, coconutty without being overwhelming, and AWESOME on an upset stomach or a stuffy head. If you’re not looking for a caffeine boost, you can’t go wrong with this tea. Rooibus is great for colds and this particular flavor mixes really well with honeybush if you need to help work some gunk out of your lungs. Also you can let it sit for freaking ever and it only gets better, so it’s great if you tend to walk away from your steeper (and who among us doesn’t?)
Preparation
My favorite mate and go-to wake up tea – most mates are a little on the bitter side, or are paired with spicy flavors to mask that, but this one is sweet and smooth. The honey smell is admittedly very strong and might bother some people who are sensitive, but I love to bury my nose in it.
Preparation
I was working at Teavana when this tea was introduced as a limited edition in 2012. I loved it so much, I sold the store out completely three times before it was made a permanent addition to the lineup, and I never let my tin go empty! It’s delicious hot OR iced, and it blends well with a number of other herbals – my favorite being the Citrus Lavender Sage. I believe Starbucks changed the formulation a bit, but it’s still lovely. The strawberry is tart, but the grapes help sweeten the deal a bit. This is the tea I gift to others, and the kicker is that I’ve never been a huge fan of oolong.
Preparation
Super caffienated with one heck of a ginger burn at the end! I couldn’t taste much other than the ginger, but that hardly matters, because it will wake you up AND burn any nascent cold or ick out of your head/face/throat. An awesome kick in the pants.
Preparation
Not quite as strong as I might have hoped, but still a delicious tea that actually tastes of apple. The vanilla isn’t overpowering either (a plus!), which I might have expected from something with ‘custard’ in the name.
Flavors: Apple, Vanilla
Preparation
Everything I want in a flavoured black tea – rich AND sweet AND warming! I’m more of a green or white person, but I love how the buttered rum overrides bitterness from the tea, even if you oversteep it a little.
