1408 Tasting Notes

So I’ve tried 4-5 oolongs now from DavidsTea. All of them flavoured of some sort. And I didn’t enjoy any of them. Agh frustration. So tonight on my trip to DavidsTea I picked up this one to determine if it was the flavours OR the actual underlying oolong tea I wasn’t loving. So here goes.

YES! This one I’m enjoying. It’s certainly got a distinct taste, but I am liking that. PHEW. I was worried there for a moment it was the oolong. And I bought 2 more flavoured oolongs tonight as well (Vanilla Orchid and Happy Kombucha) so perhaps I will enjoy those. Or perhaps for me it will be unflavoured oolongs. I’ll keep you posted.

2nd steep just as delish :)

I have this one too! Can’t wait to try it. I’ve definitely developed a taste for oolongs, although I just brew it western style.

Hope you enjoy the others.

Courtney 12 years ago

What’s considered western style brewing? I definitely recommend it!

TeaLady441 12 years ago

Western style is steeping oolong for several minutes, as opposed to steeping it gong fu style where you don’t for 30s, then 40s, then 50s, etc. I haven’t done it but apparently each infusion tastes subtly different.

*do it, not don’t.

Guess floral teas just aren’t for me because this one’s still too floral. Oh darn. A nice smooth tea overall.

Eh. Another letdown today. This one isn’t as offensive as Midsummer Night’s Dream or Strawberry Rhubarb Parfait but also not something I’ll keep around.

Hm the scent of this on both dry and steeped makes me think of a carbonated grapefruit beverage.

2 for 2 today. Geez. See what happens when I have to wake up at the crack of dawn and miss my morning tea? Bad choices.

If anyone’s interested in the rest of my 12g sample I picked up, you’re welcome to it.

Along with Rose Congou Green, Chocolate Chili Chai, Organic Kanpe Tea, and Strawberry Rhubarb Parfait.

This one smells pretty yummy but I believe the hibiscus I’m smelling is tarnishing the actual strawberry rhubarb scent. But it steeps a really pretty red/purple colour!

I’m tasting mint and lemon and something else I’m not familiar with. This one’s pretty yummy but I’d have to be in the mood for minty to have it.

I love this one to help shut my brain off before I go to bed… I’m not normally into chamomile but this is forgivable.

Courtney 12 years ago

Hah yes the more I have the more I feel it may shut my brain off rather than back on for my last few pages of reading here.

:p Good luck! It’s a good one the night before a test when you need to just chill out.

drank Jumpy Monkey by DAVIDsTEA

Hmm smells like some sort of bizarre coffee. I had a mild ice coffee addiction in the summer (the joy of what spring AND summer courses will do to you), but the smell of this one isn’t really doing it for me.

Also getting a whiff (barely) of maybe bananas? I’m not seeing that in the ingredients. Just waiting on it to cool.

I am excited to be drinking this out of one of my many new mugs from DavidsTea since both my orders finally arrived today!

This one’s not for me. I’d just have coffee if I wanted coffee, rather than a coffee-tea hybrid.

Yeah I know what you mean! Sometimes I feel like I’d be better off drinking cocoa too, instead of chocolate teas. Some hybrids just can’t compare.

what kind of mugs did you get?! my roommates and tea guests all tell me how much they love my cups and mugs from davidstea. also i’m having this mate for the first time right now. and it’s definitely missing something.

Courtney 12 years ago

I got their “The Perfect Mug” with blue seagulls flying on it :) Reminds me of home haha. And also one of the Asian style mugs (neither are offered anymore) but I use the Perfect Mug always. I’m actually going to invest in another once some more summery ones come out :)

Shmiracles 12 years ago

i have 3 of the asian style mugs and i’m so glad i got them when i did. if i ever want to get someone a tea gift that’s new to tea i will probably get them a perfect mug . in fact maybe i’ll go order one for my sister right now.

drank Earl Grey Creme by Teavana

Thanks ToiToi for sending me this sample!

Smells pretty good. Not nearly as strong as an earl grey so hopefully this one will sit well. Just steeping.

It was my birthday a few days ago and today my friend gave me my gifts – one of which was a Buddha board! So awesome (I even did a blog post on it!). I’ve been playing with it all night. I can see many study distractions in the future with this on my desk. Oh my.

I’m enjoying it more than pure earl grey for sure. But still not thinking it’s what I’m looking for in an earl grey. But I’m also not sure what exactly it is I’m looking for. Perhaps I’m just destined to try every earl grey out there.

My grandparents got me the matcha essentials kit for Christmas so I had to try it out. I’ve only had matcha mixed in with green tea lattes (with coconut) at a shop at my school so this is a new experience for me.

Well I googled how to make a matcha latte and I followed the instructions (minus the milk frother – perhaps I’ll order one). It’s a grassy, earthy taste. I’m enjoying it but it’s different for sure. I added a wee bit of coconut syrup to my cup. Enjoying it a little more with the addition of coconut. I’ll definitely be trying out different ways of making matcha :)

TeaLady441 12 years ago

Sounds interesting! I’ve never tried matcha – I should see if I can get a take-home cup from DavidsTea to try it out. Good luck with it.

Profile

Bio

I love black and oolong (unroasted/green and red preferable to roasted) teas, followed by green or red rooibos, herbals, whites, and subtly flavoured greens.

Likes:
Raspberry, strawberry, peach, apricot, rhubarb, passionfruit, blackcurrant, redcurrant, fig, and most fruits in general, maple, creaminess, hay, biscuit, lavender, and cacao/dark chocolate.

I enjoy bergamot when paired with flavours that mellow it.

Dislikes:
Any smokiness at all, stevia, too much blackberry leaf, rose, jasmine, ginger (except in chai), cinnamon-heavy teas, anything cloying or fake/candy-like.

I’m vegan and have an allergy to potatoes, so I avoid any animal products in tea, along with sprinkles as these often have potato starch (I’ll happily pick them out of blends).
