Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon, has been providing excellent teas since the mid 1800’s and is currently one of the largest tea producing countries in the world. Prior to the introduction of tea plants to Sri Lanka, this country was primarily known for its crops of cinnamon and coffee. Due to economic changes, which affected the cinnamon crop, and a fungal disease, which devastated the coffee plants, Ceylon began experimenting with tea plants in 1839. It wasn’t until 1867, when James Taylor, a British planter, began a tea plantation in Kandy, that tea was established as a viable industry. His venture was soon followed by other tea gardens in and around the area.
Sri Lanka has 6 growing regions: Kandy, Uda Pussellawa, Uva, Ruhuna, Dimbula and Nuwara Eliya. The central highlands of Sri Lanka offer humidity, cooler temperatures and consistent rainfall, all of which provide a favorable environment for high quality teas.

I have been looking for evening decaf teas that are not always Roobios, which is iffy for me, although I seem to have plenty of blends. I generally adore most of Simpson & Vail tea, and I have had three of their standard similar black blends that are not decaffeinated – for some reason this one is WEAK. I have tried three times and it’s like weak store bag tea. Even the consistency of the leaves is almost a powder type. Very disappointing.
Growing up, orange pekoe was always my dad’s tea of choice, so I was inspired to pick up the decaf version as part of my order. I definitely enjoy plain black teas a lot more when I’m not stressed about having too much caffeine! The taste is sweet, malty, and mild. It gets a little bitter as it cools. I probably added too much sugar, but this was a pleasant cup. I’ll finish my one ounce, but I won’t reorder since I tend to go for more exciting teas. For what it is, though, this is enjoyable! The second brew didn’t have much flavor, so I guess I’ll only do one steep or a tiny second steep in the future!
