From Seven Cups

A full and fruity traditional blend of nine herbs: jujube date, longan, goji, ginseng, hawthorn fruit, tangerine peel, chrysanthemum, Chinese licorice, and young bamboo leaf. Used for balanced support of the immune system in Chinese herbalism.

Our Seven Cups Eight Treasures was formulated by a highly-regarded herbalist local to Sichuan province. The recipe was written to yield a rich herbal brew, balanced in its components to be both nutritious and gentle enough to drink every day. The herbs in our Eight Treasures herbal tea are sourced individually and fresh each season. Eight Treasures is a very popular herbal tea throughout China.

The herbs include:
• Jujube date for the blood
• Gui yuan (longan) for the blood
• Goji (wolfberries) for the liver and kidneys
• Ginseng for energy
• Sahn zha (hawthorn fruit) for digestion
• Chengpi (tangerine peel) for digestion
• High elevation snow chrysanthemum flower for the respiratory system
• Young bamboo leaves for cooling
• Chinese licorice to soothe the throat

This herbal tea is caffeine-free, and each package contains 7 individually wrapped packets.

This tisane actually reminds me of pickles. I think it must be the chrysanthemum giving me that connotation, as it often tastes a bit savory/peppery, so I could see it making me think of dill. I’m surprised that it’s not sweeter given the classic jujube, longan, and hawthorn fruits included. I do taste a bit of that syrupy sweet quality from the fruit, but I think mostly I’m getting chrysanthemum and the tangerine peel, which together are giving me pickles. I don’t think I’ve ever had bamboo leaf, so not sure what that is adding.

Anyway, not quite what I expected given my previous experience with similar TCM tisanes, but still very interesting and strangely enjoyable! :P

The licorice does build a bit as I sip, which gives it a stronger sweetness.
