From Nio Teas

This ceremonial matcha is from the Yabukita cultivar, the most widely grown cultivar in Japan. The tea has a very strong vegetal flavor and a smooth creamy note of butternut. Unlike the Washimine, this tea has a tiny bit of astringency, but far less when compared with a standard matcha. This Matcha is of supreme quality, evident in its strong green color.

This farm is located in Wazuka, right outside the old capital of Kyoto. This region is famous for the production of matcha tea. Powdered tea was the original way to consume matcha in Japan, and the first tea plants to be cultivated in Japan were grown right outside Kyoto at Kozanji temple in the Toganoo mountains.

Nio Advent 2023
I’m cold. I just can’t warm up. This is to remind me when it is stupid hot this summer and I want it to be cold again that there is no winning. The coloring on this one is decent. Vibrant but could be a tinge deeper in green. The dry aroma was kind of meh but then again with packaging like this one should not expect much. Water brewed to 40F. Sieved and whisked. Surprisingly I made a good froth. Hmm… Well… The first sip was a little bitter. So I’m adding more water. The grassiness is not dissipating. May work better as a matcha latte or in culinary recipes but on its own this one lacks character. Unless punch in your mouth is a good character of matcha but.. not for me.

Nio Teas Advent Calendar 2022 – Day 7

Morning matcha! Prepared as a concentrated iced oat latte, about a teaspoon of matcha for 4 ounces of liquid, unsweetened.

Oof, for some reason this came out quite bitter? Odd because I didn’t even use warm water. It has a powerful vegetal-grassy and seaweed-like umami flavor, more on the savory side than sweet overall. Very intensely “green” in flavor, with plenty of steamed spinach and fresh wheatgrass.

Not my favorite, just because of the bitterness mostly. The reviews on the website don’t mention it, so not sure what that’s about… I guess it’s just me and my preparation.
