From Kanes Tea Company (Yunomi)

A sweet matcha flavored with the sakura blossoms of the Japanese spring (actual flavor comes from the sakura leaves though, so powdered Sakura leaves from a Shizuoka farm growing organically was used). Add hot milk to transform this into a delicious latte!

Geek Steep S2E18 – Danganronpa

So this week’s fandom was one of my choosing and, generally, that means I have a solid idea of what teas I want to pair. Or, at least, where to start when brainstorming. My first idea was that I wanted to pick a sakura/cherry blossom tea because my favourite character in the anime/game is named Sakura. She’s not a very big focus in the episodes we watched though, so I decided that I’d drink my Sakura tea for the recording…

I actually own another Cherry Blossom matcha, from DT, that I just adore but we’ve actually used both of DT’s cherry blossom teas (the matcha and the loose leaf) as well as the cherry blossom oolong that I own already this season. It seems, without realizing it, that maybe cherry blossom is the Lapsang this season!? Thankfully, I have a lot of teas to pick from so we weren’t out of cherry blossom teas just yet to choose from…

I thought the taste of this one was great! It definitely has a deliciously sweet and playful cherry blossom flavour that’s perfect for this weird not quite winter and not quite Spring weather with just a bit of a nice fruity undertone. Reminds me a little bit of almond cookies, but I know that’s just because of that weird flavour phenomenon where your brain processes almond and cherry, and vice versa. The main issue was just that it’s very gritty which is always just an awful experience in a matcha.

Now, since recording the episode and discussing the texture of the matcha, I have learned that there’s actually ground sakura leaf in the matcha so I’m definitely more understanding than I was with my first impression. It still doesn’t erase the fact that this matcha has some texture issues, but it adds an interesting element of authenticity to the flavour and it at least assures me that it’s not just inconsistent grinding/quality of the tea leaf itself throughout this company’s different flavoured matchas…

This doesn’t quite taste like sakura to me. It has a sweet cinnamon flavor to it. It’s also very, very sweet. Not a favorite.
