From DAVIDsTEA

Around the clock

Chicory is coming back in style. No wonder: it’s a classic. It’s been enjoyed since ancient times, by everyone from the Romans to the medieval monks. And today, it can be enjoyed by you. Here, we blend organic roasted chicory root with almonds and vanilla. Drink it in the morning as a coffee enhancer, then have it on its own before bed as a midnight treat. It’s rich, dark, satisfying and completely caffeine-free.

Coffee substitute, eh? That makes sense…. boy does this brew up dark! 4 minutes and it’s more opaque and dark than most coffees, I think! I didn’t drink too much without sweetener (yes, I dumped in some maple syrup), but the flavour was reasonably pleasant. Strong and full, though not bitter like coffee, just heavy and rich, with maybe a touch of the flavour of liquorice (but no lasting weird sweetness, just that black liquorice flavour). A bit on the woody side, perhaps (but not the woody I mentioned in other reviews. There, I meant stale. Here, I mean it in a much more favourable light? Hard to explain, apparently!)

Anyhow, once sweetened (I couldn’t handle much unsweetened… but I also don’t drink unsweet coffee), it’s more palatable, but I’m still not overly fond of it. I’d rather drink my sweetener with a nice spicy and/or smoky chai.

Thanks to Janelle for a sample of this tea!

This tea made me read the old nursery rhyme of Hickory Dickory Dock which I had not done for many years, as I age I like to learn about the history around such childhood rhymes. This one doesn’t seem to have a definitive answer as to it’s origin but it was nice to read it non the less. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hickory_Dickory_Dock (For any one interested).

Sharing a pot of this tea with my husband tonight, it’s our 11 year anniversary tomorrow and I’m going to the UK’s largest vintage fair tomorrow with my mother for a spot of shopping. Then on Sunday I’m going to London with hubby for some shopping. Going to Camden Market in the morning and we booked a table at Teanamu Chana Teahouse which is an authentic Chinese tea house that serves vegetarian food too. There are only a few tables (around 7 or 8) so I feel very lucky to have managed to book a table.

The tea mix looked large and dry, different to the picture. It has a slight cocoa scent but was very dry and made me sneeze as I inhaled deeply.

Flavour wise we are comparing this tea to very cheap coffee as it has a strange chemical taste, which we are putting down to the chicory. It sounds nice on paper (chicory, almonds and vanilla) but I don’t think the execution has worked, at least not for our pallets. Extremely sour.

I’m sorry but I can’t drink it…tipping this away. I don’t know if I steeped it too strongly or if it’s actually just the blend (which I noticed has a low overall rating). So I wont be rating this but to make me throw it away is bad, and for my husband to say he can’t drink it (and he drinks loads of cheap coffee) then I know something is wrong.

Happy (early) anniversary!

OMGsrsly

It is more like ovaltine or Caf-Lib coffee substitute. I love it, but it really is a weird taste if you’re not used to the chicory! If you have more, you might want to try steeping it in milk for more of a latte feel. :)

Hallo Chillie

Happy (belated) Anniversary! Hope you had a wonderful time celebrating. Would love to hear about your experience at Teanamu.

Anna

Happy belated anniversary! And I love Agatha Christie’s use of nursery rhymes in her books and titles.

Well it tastes exactly like coffee but without even the benefit of being caffeinated.

This is the first time I’ve had chicory tea. Hmm…must be an acquired taste. I do like the earthiness and it has a wonderful aroma of vanilla and almond, but it doesn’t mask the taste of the chicory bitterness as DaisyChubb describes. There is this weird after taste. I think this tea would taste good with some sort of liquor.
