From Adagio Custom Blends, Christa Y

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a literary tea drinker in possession of an empty teacup must be in want of a delicious libation. Fit for socially-satirical English Roses everywhere, this blend weds sweet blackberry and sensible vanilla with poor-but-pretty cream tea in a highly suitable marriage for all flavors involved.

I like Jane Austen. You like Jane Austen. We all like Jane Austen. Join the Jane Austen Mafia and proceed to bump off — allegedly, of course — those who simply can’t understand what it means to be part of our witty, verbose Austen ‘family’ of old literary souls. Just remember the rules of our ‘organization:’ don’t be prejudiced, have sense, use persuasion, stick to known territories like parks or abbeys, and always use the code name ‘Emma.’ (That last one is reaching, but hey, you try referencing Austen’s sole name-only novel title in an appropriately whimsical way.)

Created by: Christa Y

Ingredients: black tea, natural blackberry flavor, natural vanilla flavor, natural creme flavor & raspberry leaves

Steeping Instructions: Steep at 212° for 3 minutes.

ILU Jane Austen Mafia.
I’m almost halfway done my bag because this tea is from Adagio, which means it’s rare to spot up here in the Great Wild North. It’s silly that the idea of ordering from Adagio is in the same category as ordering from Fauchon or Mariage Freres because of crazy shipping fees.

So I will enjoy this cup… I could maybe go for reading an Austen book right now too. I love P&P and S&S (and S&S&Sea Monsters) so much that I haven’t branched out enough to her other books.

Oh, I’m rambling. If I haven’t said it already, Happy Turkey Day to those of you in the South! :D

Tuscanteal

Sighhhh… Fauchon doesn’t even ship to Canada. And I just had shipping shock the other day doing a mock order for both MF, The O Dor and Fauchon and then figured with all these shipping charges… I could fly there for cheaper. le sigh

Roswell Strange

I agree about the crazy shipping from Adagio! It feels like it’s almost the equivalent of agreeing to give up your first born, which is frustrating because there’s ONE blend from Adagio I’ve been dying to try since getting into loose leaf. However, I’m not going to pay $30 shipping for one blend :(

TeaLady441

Tuscanteal – yeah. It’s frustrating. At least there are more places carrying it? Did you check your local Winners? They had some for a bit at least.

Roswel Strange – it’s absolutely ridiculous. I tweeted them to ask why they couldn’t send it USPS and they said it WAS USPS. I don’t understand why it’s so much. If they made an effort to lower their prices they would get SO MUCH BUSINESS.
Maybe you can find someone on Steepster to grab that one blend for you? That’s how I got this one and my beloved TARDIS tea. :P (I won’t give out my contact though in case that person doesn’t want to do it for everyone, but there are tons of nice people here who probably wouldn’t mind splitting and re-shipping an order for you)

MissB

I’m a tea mule for a few companies right now, including Adagio – actually making an order tonight with them! If anyone wants something added, send me a note. We’re getting it shipped to Blaine, WA to a company that specializes in this sort of stuff, and then I’ll pick it up and parse it out shortly after arrival. Lots of options.

OMGsrsly

Ooh, MissB. I will message you.

TeaLady441

I didn’t realize that MissB! That’s great! :D
(I sometimes have access to a mule up here but more options are better)

VariaTEA

Cavo, my dad lives in California so I ship orders to him. When I move back to Thornhill I can just add stuff to orders for you and then drop them off at your house.

Roswell Strange

MissB – definitely shot you a message!

Tuscanteal

MissB – a tea mule, that’s so funny! I could probably do the same for a lot of things, I have Nexus.

TeaLady441

Oh, VariaTEA – I nearly missed your response! Thanks for the offer. I will likely take you up on it. :P (And we can meet at the DAVIDsTEA at Promenade!)

MissB

Ooh, Nexus. I’ve debated getting one. I always get questioned at the border if they ask me what I do for a living (will you be writing – anything – while you’re in the US? is my favorite question).

Tuscanteal

Worth It hands down!!!!

OMGsrsly

MissB: “My signature. On the credit card receipts.” Although sometimes they don’t have a sense of humour.

VariaTEA

haha Hopefully one of us will get hired at that DAVIDs and then we can have discounts on their tea.

Josie Jade

I’m about to order this one and am SO excited!

TeaLady441

I hope you enjoy it!

MissB

OMGsrsly: Ha! Yes, I’ve learned to keep it serious at the border. Two hour cavity searches are someone else’s idea of a fun afternoon. ;)

Still working on my baggie of this from Azzrian! I think I oversteeped a bit today, as it’s kind of astringent and there’s definitely some bitterness going on. Or, it could be because the tea travelled in my backpack a bit longer than it should have, and I know that at least once, I crushed some of it while grabbing for my phone or something else in the same pocket. Whoops. However, it’s still pretty tasty. I’m finding flavoured blacks that include caramel/vanilla/something along those lines, in addition to other flavours, are by far the best ones for me (although straight blacks like Laoshan and Butiki’s Mi Xian far surpass flavoured teas for me in terms of deliciousness and lack of astringency!)

Anyways, this is a pretty good cup! Trying to get caffeinated to go upstairs and grind some samples… need to work enough to deserve the reward of opening up and playing with my brand new just-delivered-today MacBook Pro! (Of course, the computer came literally ten minutes after I left the house this afternoon.) So excited! And 3 tea orders are en route as well… pretty stoked! My credit card is not super happy with me right now…

Sure was! Still have 3 cups left, at least! Need to improve the work stash, so now it lives there.

Thank you Josie Jade for sharing. This is truly a tasty cup. The blackberry is the most prominent flavor but the vanilla and cream are detectable as well. There is no astringency and the base is mellow and in the background, as it should be. This is certainly one of the better Adagio blends I have had.

i like this one too

Terri HarpLady

oooh, that sounds delicious!

Sil

it’s decent terri…at least as far as adagio goes… i only wish it was a high quality base..then it could really rock..

Terri HarpLady

Wouldn’t it be great if you have an option of choosing a base with Adagio teas?

Sil

ooorrrr…..making the same blends through a different company? bwahahaha sorry. but i have been thinking about seeing is stacy could make some sort of fruity vanilla tea for me..

strawberry vanilla? blackberry vanilla? caramel pear?

VariaTEA

I love how everyone (and by that I mean at least 3 people) is talking about a Caramel Pear Butiki tea.

Sil

yeah stacy was making one…but it defeated her temporarily….

Terri HarpLady

I still want Stacy to make me a ‘bilbo brew’ type blend, we just haven’t really gotten on it yet.

Terri HarpLady

I’d go for Caramel pear…sigh…

Sil

omg testing finally done…. i can sleep now… soo tired…

Roswell Strange

Caramel Pear Pecan! Do want <3

Please excuse my exuberance, but I cannot contain my deep feelings of joy this tea brings. Since my last encounter with this elixir, I have resolved to secure more by purchase. But alas, at present, I find myself in less than profitable circumstances. So, I must ration the generous portion my trusted friend and accomplice (KiTT) provided. Simply put, I love this tea and would like to be considered for the title “Hitman” of the Jane Austen Mafia if any of you could kindly direct me to the proper authority.

KeenTeaThyme

I’ll split a bag with you when you run out, if you’d like. ;)

Uniquity

I have got to try this tea. Maybe I should justify an Adagio order sometime. Or is this something you to buy lots of as it’s a custom blend? I’ve never used Adagio.

teawing

KiTT: you have a bargain my dear. I await your instructions.
Uniquity: it comes in 3 oz according to the website

Uniquity

Whoa. Checked out shiping to Canada…Pretty intense. I think I’ll hold off on those thoughts for now : )

teawing

I was afraid of that…I just had some work done by a Canadian firm, (I work for the state) you talk about a mess in shipping, customs, Royal Mounties and Homeland Security. Are we REALLY that foreign???

ambientqueenie

You cannot be the hitman of The Jane Austen Mafia, because there is. No. Formal. Jane Austen crime organization. ;P

teawing

hmmm, I guess you have a point. :)
Mafia, what Mafia? I will just wait in the mean time, for an offer I can’t refuse…

teawing

Since I can’t be hitman, can I study under the queen of Tea Haiku?

Organization?
not one she says here,
but someday, a favor asked.

SimplyJenW

In a very low whisper….“It just seems like there is not a formal one, because it is sooooo underground.” ;)

teawing

((whispering)) oh, I am so clueless! :)

ambientqueenie

Teaku is for all
sassy drinkers of the leaf!
(Five-seven-five, though. :p )

Finally trying this again. Dry smell is scrumptious, steeped I initially get standard black tea smell, albeit (artifically) sweetened. Upon closer inspection, there is a definite creamy berry sort of aroma, almost reminiscent of a french vanilla cappuchino. The black tea smell is a little disconcerting, not of the best quality. I’m positive I didn’t oversteep it, but it almost gives off that aroma. Looking at the leaves, they are very small and broken up, so I’m assuming that is the source of the ‘bitter’ smell. Hopefully, I am over-analyzing things.

The liquor is very dark and a little ominous. Lets dive in! First sips are (unfortunately) skewed by the onions from my lunch. Onion taste aside, there is a lingering sweet berry taste after the sip, but I get some of that bitter black tea at the front. It blends well with the vanilla to cover it up, I don’t really get a straight up bitter taste, but it definitely lacks the complexity and taste of some of my favourite black teas. This is one tea that only deteriorates as it cools, I prefer to drink it while hot before the bitterness becomes strong.

I definitely enjoy this but sadly have not been wowed like everyone else. I think that with a better base, this tea could really shine but at the moment it is held back by my impressions of the lower quality black tea. I’ve never had another Adagio tea before so I don’t know what they’ve used in this or what they use in general. I took a peek on the site but I didn’t see anything about the tea base. Anywho, this continues to be good but not stellar in my books and it makes me a little sad.

teawing

I agree with you, As much as I like it, it would be good to have it blended with top quality teas. The three part harmony of blackberry, creme, and black tea has so much potential.

I decided I’d go ahead and do my tasting note, even though like I said before, I diluted it on accident. As it cooled, it got sweet enough for me to taste it enough to up the rating, and be able to give a decent review. (I’ll still put in another one tomorrow, after I taste it again, just to be doubly sure!)

Smell: Dry, in the bag. OH MY GOODNESS BLACKBERRIES! But creamy blackberries. And I think I could smell a hint of vanilla. It almost smelled like a blackberry dessert of some kind, cobbler or something. Either way, a good aroma. Steeping it was about the same, but more blackberry and less of everything else. Still yummy, and exciting!

Taste: At first, I couldn’t taste a lot, and it was a bit astringent, and had a sour mouthfeel (anything bitter leaves a sour aftertaste for me.) BUT—I could taste a hint of the blackberry as I swallowed, on the back of my tongue, and as it cooled and finally accepted the two packs of raw cane sugar I added, the blackberry came out, very smooth, really sweet, a bit tart (good tart) and the vanilla came out in a creamy note. When it finally got really cold, it sucked and tasted really bitter, but I don’t like any tea cold unless it is iced and mean to be iced, and this tea I don’t think is. It is VERY good, VERY yummy, I cannot WAIT to try cream in it, and it will make an EXCELLENT desssert tea, as well as a pick me up! Yay!

Unfortunately, I have yet to fully read and finish anything Jane Austen wrote. :( As I dig deeper into this tea, I need to go pull out some of my Austen novels to enjoy with it…

Now that would be really cool! Sipping this tea reading her novels! I hope you like it more once you get the steep down but if you do not that is okay. I had a love hate relationship with this myself which is why you got so much of it lol. Its good but I think I wanted to love it more than I did. My feelings won’t be hurt if you don’t fall in love with it. Still, its not a bad tea at all and worth having until you have more things you like more :)

Violet

I actually do really like it! I know that with a better steep, and maybe some cream (though it’s good without) it will be awesome! That’s why the rating went up, is because once the flavors came out it was like “AHHHH!!”

Azzrian

Yup I liked it with cream too :)

Bonnie

Me also!

thanks cavocorax! Admittedly, i am not an adagio fangirl. While i love the packaging, i find 90% of all the teas of theirs that i have tried, to be pretty much meh. I don’t like the base for their black teas and on the whole, for the time and effort involved in getting their teas to canada, i have sooooo many other options that are easier.

all that being said, (of course) this is a tasty blend. I wish the base was a little tastier but i can deal with that. blackberry, vanilla, cream this is! :)

TeaLady441

That’s a higher rating than I expected from you. Glad it wasn’t to bad. :p

Sil

haha it was tasty… it’s just that damn base…if it was a better base it’d be like an 85.

Additional notes: I thought I’d have some of this while reading Pride and Prejudice today. I can’t believe the book is 200 years old this year! Just as Austen isn’t my favorite 19th century writer, this tea isn’t my favorite Adagio blend. If only there were actual blackberries or blackberry flavor, rather than just the leaves! Kind of like how I wish there were more than just marriage and money in Austen’s books, which is why I prefer other 19th century writers. But I thought it was time to give Pride and Prejudice a chance. But the tea does have a nice syrupy sweet flavor. Oversteeping is bad though, with this one. Two minutes!!

I get so sad when people don’t like Austen. I lurve her. She has this sly sense of humor that pokes fun at all of the emphasis on marriage and money, but doesn’t come out and say it. I feel like she was as bold as her time would allow and I suspect she was bitingly funny in real life. But, I can absolutely see why people don’t like her. I read her complete works in order this year and it was a bit much even for a fan.

TeaLady441

When I first read P&P I missed a lot of the subtle humor and wit. I’m happy I went back to it later.

My bf will never read it bc it’s so self absorbed that the Napoleonic war, and decline of the nobility don’t factor in at all, so I can see why she wouldn’t be for everyone.

I hope you enjoy it more than you expected to. :)

tea-sipper

Anyanka – I followed you today because I saw your username and icon! Poor Anya. :D I do see more humor in P&P than I did in the other Austen I read, Sense & Sensibility. (At least that I remember.) I’m early in the book, so we will see how I like it.

Cavocorax – I’m definitely seeing some of the humor! But I just wish the books could be about money, marriage, AND everything else in a life. Like your bf thinks, it isn’t really looking at the bigger picture.

Anyanka

I’m rewatching all the Buffy seasons and I made my Steepster account right around the time Anya was reintroduced. I’ve been happy to see how many steepsterites know who she is.

Thanks Nichole!!!!!
Prior to infusion this smells really awesome! Almost fruity-bready cookie-like! YUM!
After infusing it’s more blackberry than before. Still very yummy smelling.

The taste is a strong black tea taste! And the blackberry flavor comes thru nicely, too! The Vanilla is in the background a little bit and I think the cream cuts back on the vanilla sweetness a little bit, too, but they all create a very interesting flavor.

I like this. I really like the strong black tea taste and the blackberry with the cream and vanilla make for a nice flavor.

As it cools I am tasting more of the cream than the vanilla.

The aftertaste is almost rose-like. Very creative cuppa!

Nichole/CuppaGeek

Oh I’m glad you like it. Its one of my favs!

silvermage2000

Nice review I like the name of this tea.

ambientqueenie

It is rather rose-like in the aftertaste! I haven’t been able to put my finger on that before. If I could throw more floral notes into my blends I definitely would, i.e. cardamom-rose-cream for the win.

YUMMMY!!! I can’t wait to drink this while reading a Jane Austen novel. The blackberries and vanilla are taking center stage on this one. Hmmmm. Soooo good!!!

Another fab Valentine’s Day Present. So yummy!

Uniquity

It sounds SO GOOD!

Nichole/CuppaGeek

Oh its delish!!! I screwed up and over steeped it twice yesterday. . Big Time. I’m now sad I wasted to servings of this. I’ll def be buying again. I think this will be added to my morning routine. . . .

TeaEqualsBliss

I’ll have to look into this one…how did you find it?

Nichole/CuppaGeek

I’m a huge Jane Austen fan (funny- I go from one extreme to the other, Horror Genre to Jane Austen). . . and my best friend picked it up for me for V-Day.

Uniquity

I’m still in awe. There is only one more tea that I am supposed to buy for the next while, as the beau and I have imposed a ban. Ordering is so dangerous! But…I want this. Maybe someone will want to give me a VDay gift, lol.

Nichole/CuppaGeek

Oh i’ve tried to ban myself several times. . . . .then I’m like I have to have this!!!

ambientqueenie

Ooo, thanks for the love! I am the blender (blendee?) who made this blend (thanks to Adagio), and I’m so glad it turned out right. It makes my day to hear that other Jane Austenites are fans of the “family!”

I mean, uh. There is no formal Jane Austenite organization. Nope. No way.

Nichole/CuppaGeek

I’m re-ordering more today! I went thru the whole bag in less than a week!! :)

Nichole/CuppaGeek

Oh and I’ve bought at least 4 of your blends btw! :) So yummers!

ambientqueenie

Hooray! I shall inform my taste buds that they have helped other taste buds, and then dangle a taste bud medal in front of them. :)
