Another try: The water was very cooled and I steeped this for 36 seconds. I had to taste test while it was steeping to avoid the bitterness from last time. I feel like it was on the cusp of being bitter, but it still doesn’t have as much flavor as I would have liked. It’s sweeter this time, but not by much. Still no pineapple. And as it’s cooling it does taste more bitter. The rating stands, but at least now I know it needs just a bit of a steep!

Tea #17 from the ‘Here’s Hoping’ teabox.

My daughter wanted to try this as her morning tea. I didn’t think she would like it, so I just brewed up the one cup thinking I would finish it. Turns out she loved it. Loved it! I was able to get her to let me try a couple of sips, but this is more her tea review than mine.

Lots of pineapple and coconut flavor mixed with the sweet grassiness of the green tea. The rum (which my daughter referred to as ‘the odd flavor’) lingers on the front of the tongue throughout the sip. No sugar required. The tea is plenty sweet on its own.

She also hinted that this would be great with coconut cake. Looks like I have another tea to add to my shopping list and some baking to do.

Much better this time around. I’ve had far too much tea today. I can’t so much taste the rum, and I like my other coconut green better.

Maybe this one would be a good swapping tea… >_>;

Erin Hurley

When I swap. I give you a bit of all the business I own!

The rum and coconut certainly dominate here! I almost think I shouldn’t drive after drinking it and if I drank it before 5 I’d feel I was behaving badly! I’m not tasting the pineapple at all (and I really searched for it!). I was pretty put off by this fact, as the whole pina colada idea was what drew me in in the first place. In my next infusion I will try to monitor the temperature a little better and see if that helps.

Jaime

I never got pina colada out of it, but if you want a real treat, chill it, mix with equal parts lemonade, and actual coconut rum to taste.

Thanks again to Erin for this lovely (and generous!) sample!

I’ve been itching to try some Zhena’s Gyspy tea and she has scratched my itch. Happy!
For a bagged tea, I am enjoying! The flavour is light, but with some coconut milk and rum (how fitting haha!) it’s a nice, simple treat. Sometimes my palette just wants some simplicity.

Erin Hurley

Haha! Did you really booze your tea?!

Daisy Chubb

Oh absolutely.
Just a wee bit though. :) I like to call it “enhancing the flavour” haha!

This tea is quite tasty. Sweet, very coconutty and nice rum flavor. The green tea base is somewhat muted, not too astringent, which I like. I feel like this would be better iced than hot — I will have to try it out on a warm day.

Thank you Jaime for sending me this sample to try. I found it very interesting and very sensitive to water temperature. I made this once as if it were a Rooibos and steeped it for 6 mintues in error and it was terrible. This is the second time around and for some reason I treated it as a black tea and used boiling water. However, I steeped it for 2 1/2 mins and it was infinitely better. I still found it a bit bitter but the tropical flavors did shine a lot better this time around. Next time I will be sure to use a lower temperature. I have high hopes that it will be much better.

Simply delicious green tea. I’m definitely tasting the coconut. It’s like I’ve been transported to the beach.

Making sure that the temperature is right certainly makes a difference with this tea. If you brew it with too hot water, it’s bitter and thick and must either be watered down or mixed with something to be drinkable (I usually use lemonade).

When brewed with the correct temp, it’s still thick, but not bitter. The pineapple is the most prominent note, then coconut, followed by a healthy taste of rum. The green tea base is almost lost, but there’s a grassy note in the aftertaste that let’s you know it was there. Not my favorite of Zhena’s, but if you like coconuts and rum, it’s worth a try.

Edited because I can’t type or spell right now.

I haven’t had this one in forever but cold-brewed some last night. This is so refreshing cold! I didn’t add sugar, but a bit of sugar would be nice. It doesn’t need it though. This would probably be a good tea for when you’re trying to limit calories but want something tasty to drink.

I think I prefer it cold because I can taste more of the coconut & it definitely seems more tropical this way! Now if the weather would just warm up, I might be able to imagine relaxing on a beach or something awesome like that. I am almost out of this one. It is definitely a re-stock, but maybe I’ll wait until it is a little warmer, as I prefer this one iced.
