It is no coincidence that we introduced our flowering tea on the shortest and darkest day of the year- the winter solstice. At the first breaking of light, we filled our glasses and watched the flowering tea ball slowly open up. Observing the slow process of change and opening in the tea is a comforting and meditative act, a way to remind ourselves that one of tea’s greatest strengths is its ability to remind us of beauty in the little things.
We have long hesitated to bring in a flowering tea because they need to steep for so long that they often go bitter or taste slightly dry. This hand made green jasmine flowering tea stands out in its ability to remain smooth and creamy over long steepings. The base tea is rich, filling and earthy, a satisfying counterpoint to the floral profiles. The amaranth buds taste like fresh clover honey, and the jasmine blossoms leave a lingering sweetness on the tongue.

This is from a teabox a WHILE ago. I really need to try these teas sooner. I’ve ruined these poor blooming teas before. It doesn’t help that Verdant’s instructions say to cool boiling water for a minute to get 185 degree water? I don’t think that works! So I waited about 15 minutes and poured the water in my clear mug for about two minutes before scooping the bloom out… I wish I could leave it in the mug but I’ve had these blooming flowers result in the bitterest brews before, so I wanted to avoid that! At first, the steeped tea smells horrible – like funky seaweed when I was expecting lovely jasmine. But luckily the flavor is delicious – there is something mysterious about it – it tastes like an odd fruit I can’t place, or maybe a citrus based fruit punch. Not that much jasmine in my opinion, which is odd since there is entire loop of jasmine flowers. Also nutty and not astringent at all, even though there are quite a few big leaves left brewing in the bottom of the mug. It’s actually a great flavor if I ignore the scent at first. The second cup gets a tiny bit bitter, and the flavor is a lot more vegetal, so this steep wasn’t as special.

I had this tea March 5th… it was so fun taking pictures of this tea as it opened up ever so nicely.
Dry leaf: The tea is all formed in a nice ball pre-bloom.
Steeped: It was so fun to watch the leaves unfold to reveal a flower, while giving off a nice jasmine scent. The flower was beautiful and had a nice grassy scent. The water itself was a nice dark green color. The body of the tea is full and rich in taste. The longer the flower was in the tea, the more bitter I found the water got… making that the only bad thing about this tea.
I just used this for a staff tea party at my work and it was a big hit! I am actually not a huge fan of the flavor, but the flower that blooms is wonderful! The picture doesn’t do it justice. I also showed some children this tea and they thought it was magic. It really is lovely. Even though I didn’t love the taste, the ladies at my work did (or were perhaps being polite) so that’s a win. Try out this tea! I liked it more than other flowering teas I’ve tried.
