Butterscotch

I really like the look of the dry leaf. White tea I usually find pretty anyway. This one adds yellow marigold petals and pink peppercorns. It is really lovely. The dry aroma is alcohol. I read other’s reviews and some made a ‘scotch’ connection. While hot the taste is much like the dry aroma. I was expecting pie or at least candy, so I am not sure exactly how I feel about it. I had to take my son to pick up his car at the mechanics mid cup. When I returned it was cold. I actually preferred it cold. I could better taste the scotch and the white tea. In addition it took on more of a creamy feel. The aftertaste resembles more of what I consider to be butterscotch.

It is an interesting tea with potential. I just need to tinker and find how to prepare it to suit my tastes.

Drinking this tonight because I figured since white tea has the lowest caffeine content, I can count it as a nighttime tea. :P Butterscotch is one of my favorite flavors, so I had to choose this tea when I ordered samples from The Persimmon Tree. The dry leaf is a mixture of (very) broken-up bai mudan leaves, a few golden flower petals, and red peppercorns. I have no idea why there are peppercorns in a butterscotch tea, but I’ll go with it. It smells very lovely and candy-like, with a little bit of spice and an interesting crisp, fresh flavor that reminds me of cucumbers or a crunchy pear. I steeped for 3 minutes.

The aroma is lovely creamy butterscotch and hay from the white tea. There is a tiny bit of spiciness and something that smells like licorice root… Uh oh, I hate licorice root. Well, this does taste like butterscotch, in a very mild way. And it goes nicely with the natural flavor of the white tea. However, this is some kind of weird flavor in here, and I’m not sure where it’s coming from. I guess it could be from the peppercorns, but it really tastes like licorice root. I’m thinking maybe there’s some kind of alcohol flavor element to their butterscotch flavoring?

Holding off on a rating until I try this without the peppercorns in, to see if that makes any difference…

Another tea from VariaTEA which gets me to 210…soo many teas still to drink to get to 200, let alone 100. I have to say, with this tea, the jury is still out. initial sips provide a flavourless sort of tea until the tail end of the sip where the butterscotch is hiding out. but when you hit that butterscotch, it’s delicious! Soooo while i am a fan of the flavour, i’m not a fan of that initial taste you need to get through to get to the good times :) still though, i can appreciate why ppl like this one, so thanks variatea!

Sipdown (176/182)!

This was not a pleasant sipdown, but that’s my fault…

I thought this tasted wonderful and boozey the first time I had it, so I figured I’d add in some Butter Ripple Scnapps to enhance that taste. Bad choice; turns out I’ve created a concoction that tastes like rubbing alcohol. Never again.

Even sadder than this being my last cup of this tea? That was the last of the schnapps too. I finished it out of guilt, but it was not good.

I tried this one this morning.. I picked it up as a sample with my recent order. I haven’t had too many white teas but this one intrigued me with the peppercorns.

It has a nice sweet smell, but not overly so. Steeped it is a nice butterscotch that isn’t too rich/heavy, but not too light either. I made sure to get a couple of the peppercorns in my steeper basket, but fail to find them in the flavor. It may be that I just love my spices too much and I need more personally to taste them.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Most white teas I just find too delicate and sometimes even vegetal (which I don’t care for). This one was balanced well and with a touch of sugar was like drinking a dessert.

I have several tasting notes to catch up on, but this has been a busy week and today we are preparing for a birthday party for my son who will be 9.. time goes by way too fast! I have made some homemade iced tea w/fresh spearmint (just enough in the garden..Yeah) to share.. My best friend from high school and I will likely drink most of it.. although I did make her a cold steeped mango rooibos to drink here or take w/her. I plan to spoil her this summer w/peach and mango teas… her favorite!

Thanks for sharing this tea with me, 221Tea! A couple days ago every tea was blah. Today I’m doing really well with my choices. This tea has a nice butterscotch/candy taste. The white tea seems to be a very good base. It doesn’t overwhelm the butterscotch which is very good, since that was the flavor I was looking forward to. I’m not sure I sense much of a creamy taste. Its good and I am having a nice break from cleaning windows on a sunny, fresh day!

Thank you NayLynn for sharing this with me. It is my first Persimmon Tree experience and I thought butterscotch would be a nice introduction. Unfortunately, I am not loving this like I thought I would. It is slightly butterscotch flavored but the white base is prominent and there is almost an alcohol quality to the cup that I am not loving. I am certainly glad I got to try it though :)

Holy cow, this is SUPER butterscotch! Like, most butterscotch teas taste like tea with a bit of butterscotch. This tastes like butterscotch with a bit of tea, particularly if you sweeten it at all! Awesome to have for a dessert cup…or first thing in the morning like I did.

I have had one of Those days. I spent an extra four hours at work even though I was dead tired from shooting a concert the night before (and my shift started at 6 am which meant being up 4:45. Yuck.) and nursing a headcold. And now I’m home with a lot of photos to edit. So yes, I need a treat.

This is a light, buttery blend. I’m not going to lie, it might be a little too light for me. I’ll have to steep this a little longer next time. I am getting the scotch taste that I’m sure could be brought out more with a longer steep. It provides a nice contrast to the buttery flavour. And I’m also picking up some of the sweet caramel notes once every few sips.
