From TeaLife Hong Kong

This is the only black tea currently on offer from one of Hong Kong’s oldest tea companies. Lychee black tea has been consumed for a very long time in the Lingnan Region, especially in Guangdong.

This tea was produced in Anhui and is really outstanding value for the money. There are bits of lychee peel visible in the dry leaf. This tea has been fragranced with aromatic compounds to mimic natural lychee fragrance; natural lychee tea is very mild and lightly scented, but the drinking grade lychee tea on the market is fragranced to make the flavor much more prominent.

This tea is surprisingly smooth and easy on the tummy for the price point. If you haven’t tried a lychee black tea, or if you’d like to try an offering produced specifically for Cantonese drinkers, add some of this to your cart!

I recommend brewing this tea for several minutes at 90 Celsius. This tea can take water at full boil as well, but 90 Celsius is the suggested temperature for all Chinese hong cha and I’ve found the results to be much better when using water that isn’t at full boil.

For the record I have never tried the lychee berry but to me it smelled exactly like hops when I opened the bag.

1st Steep: Very fruity, not surprising. But it tastes a ton like hops to me. That must be what the berry tastes like I guess? Extremely strong and almost sour like.

2nd-3rd Steep: The brew darkens some in both taste and look. Becomes smooth and loses the strong sour taste. The fruitiness gets toned down a touch but is still there. Making it much easier to swallow. I get a bit of a… roasted type flavor, maybe on the nutty side that sets it off. Very nice.

4th and Beyond: Seemed to lose its flavor fast but kept a nice smooth taste. I went about 8 deep.

Overall I do recommend it as its a very unique and interesting tea. Personally not my favorite combo of flavors but am very happy I bought it. I feel like this would be love it or hate it for most people.

Glad you liked it! It is also commonly brewed longer (3-5 minutes), so that might be worth a shot. Interesting that you found it sour as I have never experienced that!

Only on the very first steep. 2nd steep it disappeared completely.
