2009 HeKai Arbor Big Tree Raw 357g
The cake is made of arbor/big tree/Qiaomu tea leaves harvested in Spring 2009 from Hekai, one of the best Menghai tea regions. The Hekai area is at the ideal tea producing altitude of 1400-1700 meters. Very close to famous Nannuo tea mountain in Menghai, the Hekai tea region consists of Manmai village and Mannong new village and Mannong old village. They are among the oldest tea producing villages in the world and they contain Xishuangbanna’s best preserved, largest range of ancient tea gardens.

Teas using material from Hekai are not too easy to find so I was delighted to discover this one at Puerh Shop. Compressed lightly enough to pick apart easily. Nice dark whole leaves with only a small number of pieces. The dry leaves offer a light hint of stonefruit in the aroma. The fruit of these leaves comes through in the tea soup where there is a crisp, butter base with a touch of that good bitterness (kuwei) we grow to enjoy particularly when it balances the sweetness (as it does in this case). I enjoyed the tea’s long finish in the throat. Later infusions revealed a bit of spice working in harmony with the sweetness in the sips. Rich and potent. Overall, clean and sweet character with nice mouthfeel and appreciated as I continue to explore different tea growing regions.

Have you tried the 200g 2015 Chawangpu He Kai Gu Shu Xiao Bing? It’s pretty awesome as well. The 2009 HeKai Big Arbor is extremely inexpensive at just $32 bucks! Did it seem like gu shu material to you? Unfortunately, I don’t see any samples available.
