Amount (tsp. / ml) 4g (2 tsp) / 250ml (8.5oz)
Temperature 90C (194F)

A little-known white tea rarity from one of Malawi’s original tea estates dating from the 1920’s. Locally referred to as “The Antlers”, these charming, velvety stems are hand-sorted for their unique form. A radiant peach colored cup, full and highly aromatic.

Malawi is the second largest producer of tea in Africa after Kenya, mainly producing CTC (crush, tear, curl) tea. But African Assamica – the variety traditionally used for CTC black tea – also has the capability to turn out delicately floral white teas. From one of Malawi’s original tea estates, dating back to the early 1920’s, we have sourced an unusual white tea: our Lapansi Antlers. The velvety stems resembling soft deer antlers are namesake of this charming white tea and are hand sorted from white tea production. The result is a smooth, golden peach coloured cup, with the luscious aromas of tropical flowers, stewed apricot and lychee.

2023 sipdown no. 33

I’ve been low key searching for a White Rhino replacement and don’t often order white teas, but this one intrigued me. For anyone interested, this isn’t a decent replacement, but it’s fine as a tea in general.

The tea itself was very unique looking, noted as a “stem tea” on the website, and it’s like tiny driftwood twigs! The taste is very clean and balanced. The flavour notes are meant to be “wild honey, stewed apricot, lychee” and I’m not sure I’m getting any of these.

I have Malawi white antlers from What-Cha that sound similar. To me, it just tasted like really sweet wood and I haven’t touched it. I have some friends that loved it, but did not see appeal yet.

Interesting to look at but nothing unique and unexpected in terms of taste.
It is by no means a bad tea, especially considering it consists of only stems :D Not being true leaf means it takes a longer brewing time to extract the good stuff. The liquor has an enchanting polished bronze color, with no floating particulate.
The tea has a nice deep taste and aroma of honey and stewed apricot. I gotta get my hands on some lychees and get that taste memory sorted once and for all. As of this moment I can neither confirm nor deny their appearance in the overall taste profile.
The body feel is pretty neutral as well, caffeine content being quite low in the stems.
