From Nio Teas

This first harvest, ceremonial matcha comes to us from Uji, perhaps the most famous area for tea cultivation in Japan. For hundreds of years, Uji was known to produce the best matcha in Japan, and that reputation still carries on to this day. This tea has been shaded for 20 days to create a rich savory flavor.

This matcha starts off strong with a bold savory flavor and a thick mouthfeel. It gets right to the point with these strong umami flavors that evolve over time. The strong vegetable notes of this matcha are balanced out by the heavy creaminess of the tea. The finish is strong on these savory seaweed and baby spinach notes but without any astringency. This is a very well balanced matcha that lacks bitterness without lacking power. The combination of strength and smoothness of this matcha is unrivaled, and it makes a great addition to our lineup.

This matcha comes to us from the farm of Chanoka in Uji. This tea is grown at an altitude of 400 meters and it is shaded for 20 days to develop the sweet and savory flavor.

Here’s yet another matcha from my dwindling pile of Nio samples. I steeped the entire 2 g in a mason jar with about 100 ml of cool water.

The dry aroma is of sweet grass and mild veggies. Shaking the contents of the jar produced a good amount of foam, which I view as a minor accomplishment. This matcha is delicately grassy, with notes of cream, seaweed, spinach, and lettuce. Grassiness and umami predominate, though there’s also some sweetness. Bitterness is noticeably absent, which comes as a pleasant surprise.

This matcha is still intense for me, but it’s more enjoyable than some of the other ones I’ve tried. I agree with the vendor that this is a good place to start for matcha beginners like me.

Nio is having a buy two get one free sale prior to May 21, which is International Tea Day. I think there are some other items on sale as well. Take an additional 15% off with the code LEAFHOPPER15 (I get a small commission when someone uses this code).

Nio Teas has truly opened my eyes to great green tea…I also realized I’ve always had bad matcha prior to trying them.

Leafhopper

I’m still not sure how much I want to get into matcha, as most of the ones I’ve tried have been very intense/bitter. I tend to drink it plain instead of with milk, which probably doesn’t help. However, this one is a bit more user friendly. I’ve also liked some of their bancha and hojicha.

MadHatterTeaReview

They really have some solid bancha! I drank it too quickly.

I quite like Naoki for matcha and I feel like their prices are quite reasonable.

Nio advent 2023.
The aroma coming from the bag is not pleasant. At first, it’s kind of grassy but then it quickly changes to an almost mildew-like. And the color. It’s not the worst I’ve seen, kind of in the middle of the pack. An older avocado green. It also does not whisk well and definitely needs to be served. Oh… #$%^#($%. That’s so bad. Nope. Maybe it would be better in a cookie? I don’t know if I could even stomach this in a latte…No… oh my …. $%^ second sip is curdling in my mouth. Did this sample go bad? Holy balls… This is so bad… so bad…. Nope nope. I’m going to go wash my mouth out with So Delicious eggnog

Oh no! A 1 wow. I’m so sorry it was so bad haha. Haven’t heard great things about Nio tbh…

Skysamurai

I’ve had a mix from them but this was by far the worst.

Nio Teas Advent Calendar 2022 – Day 11

Prepared as a concentrated iced oat latte, with 2g (~1 tsp) of matcha to 4 ounces of liquid.

This is a very subtle matcha. (And then I read the description which uses words like “bold” and “strong” and I go, “huh?”) Well, to me it’s subtle lol. It has a very light flavor even at this high concentration, and it’s über smooth with basically zero bitterness to speak of. I do taste a bit of vegetal umami, but mostly it’s quite creamy and a bit nutty. Definitely some fresh and dry grass notes on the tail end as well, along with a touch of toasted nori.

Extremely smooth matcha, I could see it being a good one for beginners, aside from the less beginner-friendly price tag.
