A bizarre and wonderful tea. This aged green puerh tea is made up of extraordinarily large tea leaves that have been gathered into small bundles (hence the name). It has a marvelous flavor and delivers a lighter, sweet taste with a lingering aftertaste of dark peaches or plums. We recommend six to eight leaves per cup with multiple steepings.

After picking appropriate tender leaves, the first step in making raw pu’er is converting the leaf to maocha (“light green rough tea” ). The leaves are then dry pan-fried using a large wok in a process, which stops enzyme activity in the leaf and prevents further oxidation. The leaves can then be rolled, rubbed, and shaped through several steps into strands. The shaped leaves are then ideally dried in the sun and then manually picked through to remove bad leaves. Once dry, maocha can be sent directly to the factory to be pressed into raw pu’er, or like this one aged uncompressed and sold at its maturity as aged loose-leaf raw pu’er.

A very unusual looking tea. The appearance of the tea is what lead me to order it. The liquid brews up quite light – I expected a darker brew but this is very light. Not a bad thing, just different than I was expecting.

Sweet with notes of fruit. Each subsequent infusion proved to be sweeter than the prior infusion. Sweet, mellow, and nectar-like. A really nice pu-erh!

I received this in a swap from Dexter and haven’t been sure what to make of it. I brewed this up and i’ve been trying it this morning. It’s lighter than i’d prefer and there are some notes there that seem rather interesting. Overall, i think i’d need to play with this a little more to see what i can make of this. A rather interesting tea!

Have you ever licked a cedar chest? Can’t say I have. But I wouldn’t put it past the toddler version of myself to do so. This tea is fairly heavy with cedar influence when it comes to the flavor. The aroma, however, initially when the hot water hits it is woodsy. Then it changes to a strange medicinal pitch with a hint of vaseline… Luckily that went away pretty quickly and morphed into fresh barn hay. The flavor for the first 3ish sessions was stone fruit with cedar backdrop and after that became more woodsy. Around the 5th or 6th is was very cedar in flavor. The mouthfeel almost makes me feel as is Ive licked a cedar chest.

The appearance of the long and flat dry leaf is the most interesting thing about this tea. The wet leaf smells like tobacco and camphor, and the brew is golden. The first few steepings were quite light in taste and color, the later steepings start out light and sweet, then end with the tobacco and camphor notes present in the wet leaf. Overall its not unpleasant but not really interesting enough for me to purchase again.

This has been in my collection for quite some time, sent to me from Sil a few years ago, LOL.
I don’t know why I’ve been putting it off for so long, but today is the day.
It was quite sweet from the start, and the flavor was vaguely familiar…remember those caramels with the creme filling? There for a minute it actually reminded me of those. I wouldn’t say it tasted just like them, or was nearly as sweet as them, but there was something in the taste that brought them to mind. So there.
A few steeps later it was a little tangy, but overall the flavor was very light, and although not something I’d crave, there wasn’t anything I disliked about it…until…
the last round has a kind of soapy taste to it…

This is an interesting tea – it brews up to a wheat-golden liquid that smells remarkably like Hubbard’s Shoe Grease…I wasn’t expecting it to have that bacon/pine tar scent that reminds me of nothing more than bootblacking.

It’s hard to get past that to actually assess the flavour of the tea, but there are definitely fishy, leather-like notes that are all kinds of strange. I’m not sure I enjoy the experience of drinking this cup, but that might just be an aversion to puerhs, so take my rating with a grain of salt.

I received this from the box I purchased from LiberTEAS. Thank you for including this one.

I am still in the early stages of pur-eh exploration. I determined tonight that I think I should do two rinses instead of just the one. I don’t really seem to start enjoying the tea until the second or third infusion. This is very mellow. It is tad bit tangy, but a little less so than the other raw pu-erh I had. I have no idea how to describe the flavors I am getting at the moment. This is enjoyable, not something I think I would go running back to. I have enough leaf for one more session so I will give it one more go. I am glad I got to try this one.

I have ben wanting to try this tea for a long time, only because I thought it looked really interesting. Dexter3657 must have intuited this, since I was sent this in a generous box.

I didn’t look at the site or previous written notes on this one, so I didn’t know what to expect. The liquor brewed to a deep gold colour, and the aroma reminded me a little bit of a barn….straw/hay aroma. Oh oh. I tentatively took a sip, and was surprised at the mildness of this tea. It was sweet and a little hay-like in flavour, but I didn’t find that off-putting. It was really good, actually.

I just finished a second cup of this, and it was sweeter than the last. Some fruit notes came through, and it was quite nectar-like with the mouth-feel and sweetness.

This was a tasty surprise. Thank you Dexter!

I’m amazed at how subtle this sheng is. I have never come across a sheng that I felt I could drink all day that was this young. Not very flavorful, but, still enjoyable. I’m definitely considering adding it to my pantry.
