From Mountain Stream Teas

From the same garden of our perennial favorite Dragon’s Eye Charcoal Muzha Tieguanyin, this tea is a thick and luxurious variation on that theme. Produced agrochemical free on a small garden just outside of downtown Taipei, this Tieguanyin is made from the Jinxuan (Milk Oolong or Golden Lily) cultivar giving it the taste and feel of roast caramel and nuts with a hint of the sweet-sour fruit that makes this tea so famous. The luxurious mouthfeel of this tea sets it apart from more traditionally processed Muzha Tieguanyins.

Being made from a non-traditional cultivar and not going under the laborious charcoal roasting process creates a great deal for this tea as well. At this price point, it hits well above its weight! Certified organic teas of this caliber at this price are few and far between…

Just okay. Mostly toasty, a bit green. Very forgettable and average.

Edging between recommended and not. I got the 2019 harvest of this tea from my recent Mountain Stream Teas order, and to be honest I’m trying to utilise my short memory for this review as this tea was drunk yesterday after chugging a bunch of alcohol. Beautiful leaves with a nice aroma and liquor. Decent flavour but lacked potency, decent steep longevity and average texture, finish & aftertaste. The tea lacked a nuanced character and I can’t really comment on the cha-qi due to the possible effects of alcohol :) All in all, I drunk this tea with my extended family and they liked it, so I’ll give it the benefit of doubt and put it as a ‘recommended’ tea.

Mountain Stream Teas was kind to include this as a freebie in my order last month. Thank you :)

Looking back, the first 5 grams I wasted on shorter steepings. I went that way because of the roast; I didn’t want to be overwhelmed by it since me and roasted Taiwanese oolong aren’t the best of friends. It was very light and watered down tasting, spring water sweet, tingly minerality, hints of umeboshi and caramel.

Because I was underwhelmed, I followed the suggested steeping parameters on the bag for the remaining leaf. What a transformation! The jinxuan character became pretty pronounced. It was very smooth and light- to medium-bodied with a deep, mellow pear-like sweetness, creamy caramel, still hints of umeboshi, tender sweet grass, roasted flavor but well integrated (this is a 2019 electric roast tea so it has had time to settle). Thick aftertaste of creamy dried peaches. The longer the tea was left to cool, the more the flavors of the tea developed. It seems to be very low in caffeine.

This friendly tea is pretty reserved but not challenging in taste. If you do buy this, you’ll be rewarded by following the suggested preparation in the description/on the bag.
