Sipdown, 127. Lala’s notes on this reminded me that this has been languishing in my freezer ever since that first fateful time. I finally got around to trying it again.

I think it’s funny that there are very polar review on here. I LOVE bergamot, and usually cannot get enough of it, but at least at the robust flavoring level, this is nasty. I could hardly bring myself to take a sip. It still smells, and tastes, like cleaning solution. Bleh. No thanks.

Holy cow does this smell strong! Wow. This was a purchase for the wife, who was more than eager to try it out. I make her London Fogs all the time now (equal parts Earl Grey matcha and French Vanilla matcha whisked up with a bit of soy milk) and it’s her favorite way to get going in the morning. When I asked her if she wanted me to order more, the answer was “yes yes yes, please, yes!” and when asked what strength she wanted it, she just grinned. “I’ve always been kinda curious about ’There’s Matcha in There?‘” So super-strong Earl Grey was ordered. I’m a little bit afraid of it, the scent is so, so strong, but I’m not really a fan of Earl Grey. She likes it though. I opened the package and she smelled it from across the room. “Mmmmm, what’s that?” I’m tellin’ ya, she loves her Earl. I’m gonna make her try it straight and let me know what she thinks of it.

She is in love. The taste is indeed strong with this one (found here: http://www.redleaftea.com/matcha-tea/earl-grey-matcha.html). This may have earned a permanent place in our cupboard. For me, the lemon is overwhelming, but for the diehard Earl fan, it’s juuuuust right.

So I am at the point in my tea life where if I don’t like the tea, I am not going to force myself to drink it, or keep it in the cupboard forever in case I decide someday I am going to like it. So I would rather just give it away, or throw it away, or get rid of it somehow.

I tried mixing this one with French Vanilla flavoured matcha and regular matcha. Mixing it helped to blunt the chemical/perfume/soap taste of the matcha, but still not enough for me to enjoy drinking it. I think the matcha itself is good but there is just too much flavouring in it, so it is giving it that chemical taste. I think from reading other reviews, it would have been better with a more delicate flavouring.

So this is on the take away thread if anyone is interested in trying this (after reading my rave reviews of it and all – haha). :P

I know you have already given this away but if it happens again you might try putting the bag in storage for a few months. One company I use micro blends their EG and it is often overwhelming when I first get it. I’ve blended it with other straight teas to tame it but mostly I find it best just to wait it out until it calms down.

I have actually had this for about 2.5 months already. Although it was kept in the freezer unopened. Thanks for the advice, I will try that next time.

Yeah, as soon as I sort out my tea box offerings for when the TTB-B comes to me, I’m going to go to the giveaway thread because the trade thread means I’ll get stuff back and I don’t know if I can handle any more tea right now.

And I know what you mean by the chemical flavour. One of my early matcha tries tasted a lot like paint thinner and almost turned me off of matcha entirely.

Lala 12 years ago

This is the third matcha I have tried that has a chemical flavour. I am willing to keep trying because I have found lots of flavours that I do like. It is a bit frustrating though because it seems hit and miss for when it is bad tasting.

I really got this mainly as a mixer. I tend to lean towards the more complex, dessert-y matcha flavors like Pumpkin Pie and Cheesecake, and Earl Grey seemed like it’d be the perfect compliment to a lot of my favorites. I have so many different Earl Greys in my cupboard, it seemed blasphemous not to have an EG matcha as well even if it’s just for experimenting with. But of course I have to try it by itself first! I got:

Size: Small (30 grams)
Base: Classic Matcha
Flavor: Delicate

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t expecting much of this by itself. Like the Chai Matcha, I got it for playing around with and never really intended to drink it alone. Of course, I was totally wrong! Never underestimate the beauty of a simple matcha. Sure, it’s great to have English Toffee and Tiramisu, but there’s an elegance and simplicity to this matcha that really shines all on its own.

Bergamot is what makes Earl Grey, well, Earl Grey, and it’s nicely present here. I’m glad I went with delicate: while I do like a strong EG, I didn’t want it overpowering here at all. There’s that classic citrus tang, with just a hint of floral qualities that really go well with the fresh, grassy matcha. I’m not sure if bergamot is the only flavoring used here, because as the description states there’s just a tiny hint of warming smoke. It reminds me of a brisk EG with a strong black base, mixed in with my matcha! Refreshing, bright, and very different from all the other ones in my cupboard.

Honestly, I think it’s going to be hard to even mix this with anything else now that I’ve tried it on its own! It’s just so delicious. However, the lure of Earl Grey Cheesecake Matcha is really really calling to me. Plus, I have everything I need now to recreate Paris in matcha form! I don’t know why, but I think it would be fun to redo some of my favorite tea blends with matcha flavors. That is, if I don’t drink this one up plain first! Definitely a cupboard staple. I ordered this with the black Matcha… I can’t wait to try it. I’ll eventually have to get it with the green base too, but I wanted to try it with the black first.

Alphakitty 13 years ago

I really wanted to get it with the black base too, but I decided to go with green first. I actually think this would be really nice with the white as well, it’d enhance the floral notes.

This is quite strong and is quite perfumey, but I love EG and this is no exception.
It does taste luxurious with my whole milk and stevia, but for curiosity sake,
I would like to try it hot as well.

CelebriTEA 11 years ago

Also good as a hot latte
