Fenghuang Dancong Old Tree Oolong Tea (Mi Lan Xiang / Honey Orchid)

Dry leaves have a sweet aroma, slightly roasted. Wet leaves have a complex aroma going from a mix of light orchid, wet wood and fresh sage.
Liquor brings up the roasting taste with the final orchid refreshing, somehow sweet but with a very mineral aftertaste.

Lychee! The moment I opened the bag the aroma hit me in the face. Oh is that delectable! Fruity, a bit of minerality, and some woody tones. The dry leaf is nicely roasted, a dark chocolate color; with long twisted form. My mouth is watering. While steeping I scent more pomelo and mango. A bit of passion fruit and some lychee. The first sip reveals some roasty notes. I feel my sense of taste is a bit off because of this dang canker sore so I will have to update when it’s gone to see if anything changes. But I am also getting lychee and some charcoal. The charcoal becomes heavier with time. This is truly a dark-roasted oolong. OH! Whoa. So a minute past the last bit slipping down my throat my palate was hit with a lychee flavor. Ooo. Lychee after taste. Me likey! The wet leaf aroma has some sweet fruity notes.

Continuing sampling through this gifted sampler with a session of the oolong for which I’ve heard the most overall positive feedback: Fenghuang Dancong!! I have to say that I get it. From just the first sip this oolong is so nuanced and flavourful. The first notes that come to mind are grilled plums, fresh lychee, charcoal, roasted peanuts, orchids, pomegranate molasses, and milk chocolate. That’s a lot, I know. However, those first sips really were like a rapid fire wave of non stop flavours one after the other. It’s the grilled plum that I’m most enjoying fixating on, those subsequent infusions start to feel a little cohesive as many of those notes group together into overarching families; roast and mineral, deep jammy fruits, florals, and otherwise “brown and decadent” flavours.

I really enjoyed this oolong tea. It’s light and sweet, perfect for an easy drinking experience and is my preferred flavour when it comes to oolongs. This sweet, floral tea, that is plucked from trees over 100 years old, is great!

A very aromatic, perfume like oolong. The dry leaves smell like sugar cookies and the tea has a muscat wine quality to it, sweet, very flowery, a bit fruity, a little bit of sandalwood, very light astringency. The hydrated leaves are from 1 in to 3 in long. This tea can handle grandpa style like a champ.

side note: This is also one of my mom’s favorite among all the teas I have.

I loved this tea it was my favorite oolong so far! It has such a nice sweet smell too it that easily transitioned into the taste of the tea. It also had some floral taste in it but the sweetness definitely stay for multiple steeps and then lightly tapered off toward the end.
