An ‘orthodox’ large leaf black tea produced in Rwanda.
This tea shows what can be done when the climate and soil of the Rwanda highlands is combined with tea making expertise from Sri Lanka. The elevation and climatic conditions of Rwanda are ideal for producing good quality tea: dry spells in January – March and July – September are very similar to the climatic conditions of Uva in Sri Lanka. Rohith Peiris, the current Directeur Général, spent many years on some of the most famous Uva tea gardens, and has brought this expertise to Sorwathé and the Rukeri factory. Rukeri makes the only large leaf tea in Rwanda, and one of very few in the whole of Africa. The making skills of Rohith and his team bring out all the flavour of the leaf, combined with a beautiful golden colour.

This rukeri black tea is a tea from canton’s tea club. My first rwanda tea and only my second african tea ever. I brewed this with a teaspoon of leafs and used near boiling water. Brew time for my first cup is 3min and delivers a cup thats in color a bit ess dark then most assams. Taste wise this is a strange one, its malty and strong but with a light after taste… i can’t really place the aftertaste but its good.
I’m not 100% a big fan of this rukeri black its a very good black tea, but i have so many blacks that this one doesn’t really stand out the way i tought it would…
When opening the package of tea, I was surprised to find that there was just a hint of greenness in the scent of the dry leaves, along with a nice maltiness. Steeped for a brief 2 minutes, this cup or Rwandan tea gave a lovely balance of baked grain with a touch of malt as bottom notes. There is also a caramel midnote and somewhere in the cup is also a vegetal taste….almost like asparagus and similar to Butiki’s Crimson Horizon tea. This morning I’m just getting a touch of astringency from this tea, which for me is good, as I shy away from very astringent teas. With this Rukeri, Canton Tea Co has found a nice smooth cup of breakfast tea that offers breakfast blend drinkers a bright tasting alternative to start their day. Definitely worthy of a try!
