It’s another hot day in Doo-Dah (I have no idea why Wichitans refer to the city as “Doo-Dah” but it feels right; feel free to enlighten me if you know where this comes from). I’m pretty sure that the global warming people were right. I’m just hoping we can fix it before we all turn into puddles of goo.
In the meantime, I’m relaxing with a big glass tumbler full of our new tea of the week. It’s a blend of shou mei white teas, dried black currants, organic bergamot flavor and natural black currant flavor. And it is seriously hitting the spot. I got some really nice shou mei for this blend: it’s light and sweet, but very much a presence in a cup that is otherwise a perfect balance of tart and sweet. I have always loved our black currant bai mu dan, and if you like that and like earl grey, I don’t think you can possibly go wrong with this blend. It is delicious!

This tea was a combination of things unknown to me, making me feel slightly uncultured…bergamot? shu mei? Perhaps possible contenders for future baby names? (Em, don’t choke on your tea!) :)
Not knowing what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised at this new discovery. The flavor was fresh, slightly sweet and lightly fruity and just really pleasant. I liked it!
Just opened the last bag of this that I bought when it went on sale maybe… 7 years ago, which puts it in the running for the oldest tea in my cupboard! It still holds it’s own! The dry tea still smells really strong as does the steeped tea. The taste is still really strong too! It is way more black currant than bergamot. I’m actually having a bit of a hard time finding the berg, so maybe that part faded. The black currant alone is pretty tasty tho. It is strong, yet aromatic in an almost perfume like way where it lacks body to ground it, but not in an unpleasant way. I should really work on sipping this down and not tempt time any further in ruining a good tea.
I have always had a place in my cupboard for the classic Earl Grey and was intrigued by not only a blend with the classic bergamot flavor but also having a white tea as a base. The result – a very delightful cup of tea! The delicate white tea really allows the rich bergamot flavor to come through which is cut nicely with the sweet and tart notes of the black currants. I enjoy this most in the morning with breakfast since it reminds me of toast with a nice jelly – but is fantastic anytime of day.

I really can’t figure this tea out…I’ve been waiting for the bergamot to show up, but instead all I’m getting is this smooth fruity flavour that kinda reminds me of purple soda. That’s not a complaint, mind you, just a little strange.
It’s interesting, but I’m not sure I’d choose to have another glass of it in the future. Back in the box it goes.
