3 Tasting Notes
Do you ever find that your senses fight to be right, and you can be led astray by listening to the wrong one? I remember years ago having a dessert that included an orange coloured mousse – we were trying to figure out what was odd about it. It was orange – it should have been orange or peach, right? We couldn’t place it and we were confused. Then my sister said “It’s cantelope!”, and all was right with the world. We were using our eyes, and totally disregarding our tastebuds.
If found the same thing with this tea. I read the description, and throught “Baklava!”. But it isn’t baklava. Then I smelled it and thought “Old Lady Soap and Powder!”, but that isn’t it either (thankfully!). You know when you are trying to remember something all day, and you just can’t get it, then at 2 a.m. you bolt upright and almost shout aloud “Mickey Mantle” (or whatever it is) – you’ve remembered, but usually at this point I forget why I the information is needed. Midway through my cup of this, I had to all of a sudden text my husband “What is the name of that dessert your grandmother makes with Turkish Delight in it? Some sort of cookie…” Turkish delight – THAT is what this tea tastes like.
Not sure that it is a must have, but (now that I have placed the taste!), it is very good.
My final decision on this will be when I see how well I sleep tonight….
This is what I think of when i think of an “herbal tea”. Very generic. I don’t find any particular smell or taste coming through. There is a faint mint smell if I breathe deep. Not over powering….kind of like when my grandma’s purse….the smell of the scotch mints mixed with other smells, so that it became one smell, minty but not, If that makes any sense at all.
It isn’t unpleasant. No bitterness. It just is. I can’t see me ever thinking “Oh you know what I could really go for right now?” but I won’t hesitate to drink it again, especially if it helps me sleep!
This surprised me. I was anxious to try it, just from the description on the website. Then we got to David’s Tea and while my hubby started his search, I locked on Splash. There was a sample out, and I smelled it, and I started to lose my faith. Not that it smelled bad, but I realized this would be a leap of faith. I am new to tea, and this is the first tea I was going to be trying that wasn’t obvious. I have other tea’s, but I know what to expect. I brewed this for after dinner. We had mussels for dinner, and I figured that oceanic theme would match.
When I drink it, there is a nano second where I think I am eating sushi. Like a salty earthiness, but nor a fish taste – like the nori paper. The peppermint is there, but it is a savoury, not sweet peppermint. I gave it to my husband to try – I think he should drink mint teas for his stomach issues, but he doesn’t like them, but I think it because they are sweet/dessert like teas. What surprised me the most is that there is a peppery after taste.
So far all the teas I have bought are sweet, fun teas. This seems like a “get down to business tea”. I really liked it and intend to replenish when it’s done.
**Update – I am still really enjoying this tea. I think as I drink more and more tea, my tastebuds are getting sharper. I looked at the ingredients again, and now I am pretty sure that the peppery aftertaste that I am getting is the cardamom.
