drank Honey Drop by DAVIDsTEA
16545 tasting notes

Our, sort of, ‘joint’ Thanksgiving & Comfort (ie. Cold&Flu) collection launched today; there are several cute mug designs in this collection – including soup mugs, a ton of core teas being featured for the season, and some new samplers/kits and things. However, the most interesting thing for me is always the new tea – and this is the new one for this collection!

Based on the name, I expected this to me pretty sweet but also mints/potentially eucalyptus tinged – sort of like a cough drop? Something that would be soothing on the throat or good for congestion, like Throat Rescue and Cold 911 but maybe a little more pleasant tasting!?

In practice, I definitely do think this tastes way more pleasant that either of the two aforementioned blends, and I was sort of correct in what the ingredients/profile would be. I mean, it definitely has mint in it but it’s also pretty floral and has a surprisingly strong amount of orange in it as well. The orange is the strongest flavour, in my opinion, though – and it’s actually a really pleasantly sweet and natural orange. I mean, we’re talking really juicy here. As a partially related tangent, there’s this whole weird “thing” on Reddit about eating oranges in the shower – it’s fascinating and I recommend both looking it up and actually trying it. My point here, though, is that the sweet burst/pop or orange flavour reminded me of the intense sensation of eating an orange in the shower…

Apart from a truly magnificent flavour of orange, the finish is a little honey like in its sweetness and there’s a VERY mild tint of mint to everything, that I think accents the sweetness of the orange and adds this extra layer of refreshment to the flavour. I definitely, based on this first cup, wouldn’t describe it as a “minty tea” though. More fruity, for sure.

I’m not currently sick, but I will try to remember next time I have a cold to pull this one out in place of my standard triple strength Cold 911 to see if it does anything for me in terms of in the moment “feel better”-ness. I am glad, though, that there’s a “cold and flu” sort of tea in our line up that I actually like enough to drink when I’m not sick, though!

Friendly reminder that I do not numerically rate DAVIDsTEA blends as I’m currently employed there and it would be an obvious conflict of interest. Any blends you see with numerical ratings were rated prior to my employment there. These reviews are a reflection of my personal thoughts regarding the teas, and not the company’s.

I was creepin’ on the DT website earlier (-too antsy for Halloween items-) and saw the Matcha Miso, is this also a new flavour? is it….have you tried it yet?

and thanks for that reddit link, there truly is a subreddit for everything!

We’ve had the Matcha Miso since January – but it’s being refeatured this month as part of the “Cozy Collection” (a mix of cold&flu, soup tea, and Thanksgiving items). All of the soup teas are sold in prepackaged amounts; either a larger individual bag or a kit that cups with a mug and single serve samples of all three flavours. Personally, I really enjoy the Matcha Miso (I own it) and Tomato Turmeric – the Spicy Rasam is a little too spicy for me personally, but I’m a wuss. I should have reviews up on Steepster for all the different flavours though :)

I saw the new collection, LOVE the cobalt latte mug but no idea what on Earth I would use it for! QQ

A coworker ended up buying one for her morning cereal! It is gorgeous though (reminds me of rabbit fur glaze, but a little more iridescent) – makes me want a matcha bowl in the same style! I haven’t grabbed on yet; but it’s so pretty that I might have and get one for non tea related purposes.

Sort of unrelated, but I saw in an email DT isn ot doping custom sachet boxes? Will that be available online or just in store, and will they offer all of the flavours in sachets?

Roswell Strange

I’m not sure if they’ll be integrated online or not; and not all stores are getting the BYO Sachet Box unit in store either – I think something like 1/2 all stores are getting the unit? I know the store I’m at has had it for a while though; it’s basically 20 Sachets for $15 and you can mix and matcha which ones you choose. It’s not the full line up of all of our teas; but the range is bigger than the sachets that come in the prepackaged box format. I want to say that we’re currently carrying about 25 different teas in the sachets? But off the top of my head I’m not exactly sure how many options we have. There are ones we’re carrying all the time in that format, though, and we’ll be getting a rotation of new ones with each seasonal collection too – like right now we have the S’mores Chai and Pumpkin Chai in individual sachets. Hope that helped!

Bio

Hello! My name is Kelly, though many people in the tea community call me Ros or Roswell.

I am a mid-twenties tea addict, blogger, and all around nerd. I grew up in the Prairies, but a few years ago I relocated to Quebec to pursue a career with DAVIDsTEA in the tea industry! I’m still working on getting my French language skills down…

My first introduction to tea, in any form outside of instant and bottled iced tea, was about seven years ago when I happened to stumble upon DAVIDsTEA while looking for a birthday present for a friend! I tried their Birthday Cake rooibos blend, and I’ve been hooked on tea ever since! In those seven years; I was introduced to the online tea community, expanded my interest in flavoured teas to include a deep love and appreciation for straight teas and traditional brewing methods, got a tea themed tattoo, started reviewing teas, amassed a sizable tea and teaware collection, became a TAC certified Tea Sommelier, & even came full circle by beginning a career in the tea industry with DAVIDsTEA!

I consider myself a Jack of all Teas, and strive to have a knowledge and appreciation of all tea types, formats, and styles of drinking. I don’t like to feel boxed in to just being a “flavoured tea” or “straight tea” drinker – my expectations may vary depending on the type of tea or how it’s been processed/prepared but if it’s good tea, it’s good tea no matter how it’s been made!

You name it, I probably drink it- and I’ll absolutely try anything at least once.

My default method of preparation is hot, Western style, and straight – but I’m not opposed to additions if I’m in the right mood. If I ever add something to a tea or use a different method of preparation I will ALWAYS call it out in the tasting note though.

I like to listen to music when drinking tea, especially when I’m brewing a large pot at a time or steeping Gongfu. Often I curate very intentional tea and music pairings, and sometimes I share them here in my tasting reviews. Music is something that I find can deeply affect the experience of having tea.

I’m also one half of the “tea and fandom” podcast GeekSteep where, weekly, we discuss newly explored fandoms over tea as well as try to figure out the perfect tea to pair with each fandom. You can find us on Spotify and Apple & Google podcasts.

Favourite flavour notes/ingredients: Pear, lychee, cranberry, cream, melon, pineapple, malt, roasty, petrichor, sweet potato, heady florals like rose, hazelnut or walnut, sesame, honey (in moderation), and very woody shou.

Least favourite flavour notes/ingredients:
Lemongrass, ginger, strongly spiced profiles (and most Chai in general), mushrooms, seaweed, chamomile, stevia, saltiness or anything that reminds me too much of meat that isn’t supposed to taste like meat…

Currently exploring/obsessed with: Sheng from Yiwu, Yancha (Qilan in particular), anything with a strong sweet potato note. Also, I need to try ALL the root beer teas! Searching for a really good caramel flavoured blend, ideally with a black tea base.

Please contact me at the instagram account listed below if you would like me to review your teas.

Currently I’m employed in the tea department of the DAVIDsTEA head office. While I’m still sharing my own personal thoughts on new & existing DAVIDsTEA blends, I am no longer numerically rating them due to the obvious conflict of interest. Any comments expressed are a reflection of my own thoughts and opinions, and do not reflect the thoughts and opinions of the company. Any DAVIDsTEA blends you currently see with a numeric score were reviewed prior to my being hired there and have not been adjusted since becoming a DAVIDsTEA employee.
