drank Melon Oolong by Lupicia
218 tasting notes

I had this last night, after I returned from work, and I am happy to announce that I like it better than Ripe Mango Oolong.

I still didn’t like it as much as I thought I would, but I really have to quit expecting and take all these teas as they are. I am not going to like all Lupicia teas after all. It would ruin me, anyway!

However, this was a very pleasant and surprisingly heavily flavored oolong that tastes just as a ripe cantaloupe would. There is not much complexity to it, and the base oolong is practically smothered by the flavoring and the melon scent, but that didn’t really bother me. It delivered what it promised, was very refreshing and comforting. I can see myself reaching for it in the evening often.

Also iced!

Right now I am actually cold-brewing the Ripe Mango one. Really curious how it’s going to turn out.

mmmmmmmm

Anna

Interesting! I look forward to reading your review.

Oh, and I have that Marco Polo to send to you – I didn’t forget, I’m just a little overwhelmed with work until I leave Rome – let me know if you have a Marco Polo crisis. =)

Kat_Maria

Sil, I know you love this one! :D

Anna, thank you for remembering about me :) Don’t worry about sending it just yet, especially if you are busy. Also, let me know if you’d like anything I have. Since our last swap I have acquired some new Lupicia teas, among others :D

This is yummy and great. Of course. I expected nothing less. Although I must admit that the cream part is mostly lost on me, especially on the second steeping. But the cantaloupe… Oh yes! It’s totally juicy, ripe, refreshing and perfect. I think these unusual flowers also add some sort of characteristic mini-bite. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but this bite emphasizes the robustness of cantaloupe.

Yes, perhaps there were some creamy notes in the very first steep. More like… fruity custard notes. But I don’t care. It’s good the way it is. It’s great!

I probably won’t need to have this around in my cupboard at all times, but I will be definitely repurchasing it from time to time. I also think it will be a great companion for warm summer evenings…

Thank you, VariaTEA, for letting me try this tea :)

The aroma and flavor remind me so much of some sweets from my childhood. I can’t remember what it was exactly, but I think it was, surprisingly, some hard candy! Very unusual flavor combination, I haven’t experienced these notes in any ther tea. It is kind of similar to MF’s Marco Polo in that respect. Because it’s so unique.

There’s rose in it but kind of… fruitified. More like rosehips? Also a note of caramel… But there’s also some balanced citrus in here! Very interesting.

Yay for Des Roses et Des Bonbons! I am glad you liked it. One of my favs :).

Also, it reminded OMGsrsly of a certain candy too

Kat_Maria

I guess this tea is designed to bring out some forgotten candy notes from the depths of one’s memory!

VariaTEA

Haha maybe.

Roswell Strange

Reminds me of candy too; though I’m thinking more those almost fizzy sweet hearts, not a hard candy. The Sweet Hearts were like a dense powder/tablet.

Oh well, I knew from the aroma this wouldn’t be my kind of tea. I could just smell this sour note that is supposed to be chocolate (or hazelnut) but is not. Nut flavors are really difficult to pull off, it seems. It was okay, not too weak, but the flavor was generally not my thing. It would be kind of stretched to claim there’s chocolate and nuts in there, anyway. I only have a sample of it, so I will just polish it off and that’s that. I won’t be getting it again.

I pulled some of this to try from the TTB C round 2. It doesn’t look like that’s where you got yours, though. Is it a fresh sample, or possibly older? Nuts don’t keep long, but it doesn’t look like there are actually nuts in it, but maybe the oil? I don’t know.

Kat_Maria

It’s a sample I ordered from H&S among others. I think it is just me not digging that kind of flavor. I came across it in other teas, too. I think it is the chocolate flavoring that doesn’t work for me. I actually have a sample of H&S’s “Chocolate”, so we will see how that one goes.

I have to agree on this one. I wanted to love it but was disappointed

I got this tea from MissB as a part of a mystery package.

It was a lovely tea to start my day with. I tried not to make a big deal whether this tastes like what it says it would taste like because WHATEVER. It was a delicious, dessert black tea, sweet without any sweetener, creamy and buttery. The black base was surprisingly robust but not overwhelming or bitter. I enjoyed this cup a lot!

drank Hunan Dark Tea by TeaSource

This tea was a little weird. Unusal is probably a better word. Like no other straight tea I have had so far.

I expected it to brew pretty dark but it didn’t. It had this very curious color that was brown, yellow and dark green, all of these at once. I know it doesn’t sound appetizing, but it was actually really pretty. The aroma was mostly earthy with very strong grape notes. This is the first time I smelled grapes so distinctly in a tea.

The flavor was very bold and unique. Kind of like… if you kept your green/oolong tea leaves out because you wanted to resteep them but then you forgot about them and the next time you got to them, the leaves were getting a bit damp and perhaps even moldy, but you steeped them anyway ;D Sounds horrible, but that’s how it tasted and it was good! While it is not something I would like to have in my cupboard, it was definitely very interesting to check out.

I haven’t been on Steepster for a while! I missed it more than I thought I would :)

This was one of the teas I had some time this last weekend. I mostly had the “leftover” teas, not many new ones at all.

Anyway, this dragonwell did not disappoint, although it wasn’t close to perfection either. Dragonwells must be my favorite type of green tea. I love how they brew into this sunrise, almost pastel, yellow. And I love how they smell. This one was just as flowery as the other ones I’ve had. The flavor was surprisingly strong, usually long jings are very subtle. Perhaps I steeped it a bit too long. It had all the yummy buttery, vegetal and floral notes that make this tea so special. Thank you, Yezi Tea, for offering as many as 3 samples with your orders. That’s how I got the chance to try this one :)

Next time I order from Yezi, I would love to get some of their dragonwell but I think I will settle for the lower grade (High Grade) that is considerably cheaper. I don’t think my palate will detect that much of a difference ;)

I must have done something wrong because… I didn’t care for this very much.

The aroma of dry leaves is strong and wonderful at first but then its fruitiness dissipates and some weird plastic-bag-like notes come up. It starts to smell like something that is artificial but masks itself really good as a tropical fruit aroma.

I didn’t think much of it since it’s just dry leaf. But the flavor is very reminiscent of the way that dry leaf smelled. In fact, it is a little worse. I barely got any mango here, just some distant “echo” of it and then this plastic-bag aftertaste would kick in. I must mention here that I got this straight from Lupicia in their usual silver pouch, didn’t keep it in some ziploc on the bottom of many other teas that coud contaminate it. But I really don’t think I got a wrong batch or that anything happened to it whie I was storing it. I think it’s just me not getting this ;)

I also remember it being more bitter than you would expect from a delicate fruit-favored oolong. Especialy on the second steeping.

I seem to have an issue with their pouchong base. I remember liking Momo Supergrade that uses the same leaf as the base and while I liked Momo more than this, I still was not as elated about it like many other Steepsterites.

Oh well, I’ll keep trying it, maybe play with the steeping temperature a bit. We’ll see.

Could it be that you haven’t followed the steeping instructions? I make this at boiling/1.5-2 minutes, as the bag suggests. Most of the Lupicia-related complaints about bitterness I see come from situations where there’s a low steeping temperature…

…then again, maybe this just isn’t right for you. So sad, but it just happens.

I AM HERE FOR YOU IN THIS DIFFICULT TIME.

Kat_Maria

:D I will definitely try their steeping instructions. I just thought that one can’t go wrong steeping a Lupicia tea whatever it is they do, but maybe NOT ;) I will try 2 minutes @ boiling next time!

Anna

I look forward to reading all about it, because tea science!

(I went to my tea cupboard and told the RMO to not be sad and that everything is going to be okay.)

This just might be the fanciest looking tea I’ve ever seen. Curly, thin, twigs of reddish-salmon-pink hue with vividly green tea leaves attached to them. So lovely.

I was hoping this would taste similar to Fragrant Yellow Bud, also from Zen Tea, but it is more similar to a TGY, pretty vegetal in both aroma and flavor. The twigs seem to add a bit of underlying bitterness. I steeped it twice and both times the tea was flavorful and tasty.

I don’t think I would buy it again any time soon, but I am glad I got to try it. It is definitely unique and special!

drank Silver Bud Ya Bao by TeaSource
218 tasting notes

This was a part of my free Steepster Select package. I remember having some ya bao tea as a part of a Verdant blend (the one that tasted herbal to me even though it was not an herbal) but this was the first time that I had it straight.

As lovely as the dry leaf looks, there’s something about this kind of white tea that doesn’t sit well with me. And that doesn’t mean it’s giving me indigestion or anything. There’s just something about the way it tastes… Like drinking tea sap. And I don’t think I am fond of this note. I can’t explain it! It’s like some honey note that went wrong and fermented into wood-shavings.

Well, either way, I will venture to try it again since I have one more single serving packet, and I am not going to rate it either for now * shrugs *.

ME & TEA

I started drinking tea when I was a teenager, my dad used to make tea a million times a day as it was (and still is!) good for his health. So he would make it for the entire family. Usually it was Lipton with a teaspoon of sugar per cup and a slice of lemon. I was fond of it made this way then a lot.

Then I would have occasional loose leaf teas, I slowly got into green tea… I would mostly stick to bagged tea though. It was just convenient.

Only recently, in the middle of 2013, did I start getting seriously into all kinds of loose leaf tea.

My cupboard only reflects what I have in ‘regular’ (non-sample) sizes. It could be that I have some tea you’re looking for, just in a smaller amount, even though it is not in my cupboard, so you can always just ask when swapping with me :)

[LOVES]:
- Chinese & Taiwanese black teas
- second flush darjeelings
- malty assams
- green oolongs
- Chinese green teas
- super-fruity rooibos/honeybush “teas”

[LIKES]:
- Japanese green teas
- white teas
- dark oolongs
- interesting dessert teas
- earl greys
- pu-erhs

[IS INDIFFERENT ABOUT]:
- chai teas
- herbal teas
- fruit teas

[DISLIKES]:
- mint in blends (it’s ok as straight mint)

JUST ME
Apart from tea, I love reading, board-gaming with my husband, learning foreign languages (currently Spanish and Portuguese) and listening to lots and lots of music!

And if we just stick to food-related stuff I am also a great aficionado of good craft beer and dark chocolate :)
