Another Winners/Homesense find. (Can you tell that I work there?!?!) Haha
A lovely, simple, mild, smooth green tea with the flavour of plants (not vegetal though, milder than that) and a slight tinge of citrus orange. It’s quite understated and I knew straight away that this would be perfect as a morning-time tea before I leave for work. Destined to be a new staple!

Flavors: Green, Orange, Plants

gmathis

Since I’m guessing Winners/Homesense works a lot like my favorite outlet stores (grab it NOW because it might not ever be here again), you are perfectly positioned for some great finds!

Jason

I’ve worked there for 7 years and have found so many amazing things! Yes, you have to get it when you see it or else you lose out! Our Winners and Homesense stores are the same at the American TJMaxx and HomeGoods stores. My store is a combo store so I get the best of both!

This tea is such strange.

Although I took it from huge bags – it was completely fresh (well wrapped in foil wrapping) and I thought it is some fresh tea when I smelled the bag.

It was huge hit by grassy notes of green teas, little bit of grass seed but no way hay-like aromas! And then floral notes. Mostly present were chamomile, naturally, but hints of meadow flowers too. That counts as well for brew aromas

To the taste – it was actually delicious! Green tea was similar to aromas, that said mostly grassy and overall floral, meadow flowers and, athlough I am not fan of chamomile – it was great there.

To be honest I could not imagine green tea with chamomile – but it works fairly well! Trying fresh tea with fresh chamomile would work better, loose leaf than tea bag as well..

But decent! If you want to try something new… I can suggest trying it.

You’re right…you don’t see those two “basics” blended together very often. Sounds interesting!

derk

Oof, that company’s website. I’ll pass.

Martin Bednář

gmathis: yep, exactly my thoughts. Two basic teas and together. And moreover it works!

derk: Ahh, I had open US website to see what’s wrong. Everything!

From huge bags, so old.

Probably age has indeed affected the taste. It was nice, bit chocolate like base tea with malty notes, but linden blossom? It was there, but very weak and almost non-present. Such a shame.

Overall, quite okay. I have expected more linden notes; as dry bag it was very aromatic, but… when brewed, it’s not.

drank Green Tea & Lemon by HYLEYS

It’s a “ho-hum” kind of tea. Rather boring in my opinion. The green tea flavour is far too light and the lemon flavour is barely noticeable. I guess I should be grateful that it wasn’t bitter at least.

Another tea from huge exchange. Another random picked, this time black tea.

Well, it is what you can expect. It is black tea with herbal notes, maybe bit too strong are those. When it cools down the tea base is stronger. Probably lots of not carefully selected herbals are in, because I notice as well some woody notes.

Overall, it is not a bad tea. But maybe past from its best, or just bit boring one. Black tea base not much present, overpowered with herbals – making it sweet as well bit woody for my tooth.

There’s this little Ukranian grocer that opened up near my place that I’ve wanted to visit for a while, because their tea section is right up against the window, so I can look in at it. Unfortunately small shops make me nervous so I’ve kind of avoided it. I finally made it in the other day on my way back from another shop, and then I was worried they’d think I was weird for going into a specialty grocer to buy a single box of tea (in my defense most of the teas were entirely in Cyrillic). But strawberries and cream sounds like a good ‘half awake in the morning’ kind of tea.

It SMELLS delicious, like strawberry jam. It’s just a fanning teabag, moderate Ceylon tea base doesn’t overpower the strawberry. Not really getting any ‘cream’ in the taste, although there’s an extra sweetness in the smell that might be it.

drank Japanese Pure Matcha by HYLEYS
737 tasting notes

Apparently I was super grouchy and snobby when I first reviewed this tea— so I’m upping my rating on it now.
Normally unflavored green teas are not my thing, but I do sometimes make exceptions for Japanese green teas. This one is rather nice. I love buttery sencha as a base, and the addition of the matcha gives it just the right amount of umami. This was also relatively low-maintenance with steeping, which was nice as well.

Not very good quality and weak flavor. Double-bagging it helps. Good in a pinch and I’m sure it’s not hurting me in the health department, but I doubt it delivers as many health benefits as the box promises. Otherwise Burlington Coat Factory wouldn’t be hawking it for $3 a box.

I’ve never tried real matcha, but I have had good quality sencha before. I definitely taste the sencha in this blend. It’s accompanied by a grassy, slightly burnt/ bitter note that I suspect is the matcha.

I do enjoy Japanese green teas usually. I should try real matcha soon.

Welp. Mine doesn’t say “slim” on it. A friend gave me a box, from Hawaii.
My first cup today was meh, but I used a lot more water than I should have.
Very soft and bland. Cotton candy meets socks. It might do well cold brewed?

gmathis

Thanks for the much-needed giggle! (Cotton candy socks—doesn’t it just make your toes feel sticky? :)

Evol Ving Ness

Perfect description! I don’t know the tea, but I can just imagine.

Fjellrev

Yikes, hope the sock aspect doesn’t show up in the cold brew if you take that route.

Indigobloom

Gmathis, hah. Not quite. Almost wish it did :P I always thought goji berries had a strange taste so I can see how the cottony note would come out in a tea

Indigobloom

@Evol – aww thank you. You’re sweet!! like cotton candy. (and definitely not socks :P)

Indigobloom

@Fjellrev, yeah I’m a little hesitant to try! my box is at work, and I haven’t got anything to cold brew overnight in so it might not happen. But it can’t hurt to try!

drank Passion Fruit Tea by HYLEYS

I was lucky enough to pick this tea up at a discount price. The tea was wrapped and was in a nice reuseable tin. The first thing I noticed was the fragrance, like peach. The tea was a great looking black Ceylon, right away I liked the appearance of it.

I brewed tea using two teaspoons of tea and 400 mL of water for two seperate steeps. The flavour was excellent.

I encourage you to try it.

drank Black tea & Thyme by HYLEYS
1774 tasting notes

Got this in a swap with Kaylee. Thanks Kaylee!

I tried Fauchon’s thyme tea and really liked it, so I was excited to try this version. I’m definitely getting a nice mouthful of thyme! Pretty strong for a three minute steep. I get a little tea taste on the aftertaste, but the thyme rules the sip for sure! It isn’t quite as well rounded as I remember the other tea. This one has more high notes in the sip and lacks the mid and base notes that my favorite teas have. Still, it’s pretty good if you are looking for a slightly savory thyme tea!

Medium steep; I taste/smell: light floral. Medium —→ musty, spicy, spices, mud, autumn leaf pile. Strong bitterness.

Heavy steep; I taste/smell: strong to overpowering bitterness. (I’m not going to bother with the rest).

All in all, I’m not too Sure where to stand on this tea. I rate a 50. Not recommended for gongfucha. Better off giving this tea to a friend.

a good tea. however don’t overstep as it can taste sour/bitter
-——————————————-

when I smell the leaves, it smells like smoke, leather and peppery

when I smell the brewed leaves, it smells like leather and pepper

when I smell the brewed tea, it smells like mild pepper and strong leather

the same with when I taste it.

thus because it can get bitter I score it a 90. I don’t recommend it because it has a very rough taste

time to do a full review:

when i open the tin, the aroma hits me fast and strong! the leaves smell like the citrusy part of an orange with strong lavender. (i think its lavender) and ground pepper

it is a little difficult to put into a tea ball.

it steeps fast too. less that 30 seconds is good for me

when i taste it, it tastes just like it smells! :)

a great black tea!

This tea is quite a floral strawberry tea. The top note is a mix of rose and safflower, with the safflower dominant to the rose with its watermelon note this blends with a strawberry cream with the raspberry note appearing last and dominating the aftertaste. The strawberry noteis of tart ripe strawberries that have been cut and allowed to heat up in the sun a little bit. The base tea is a broken large leaf Ceylon which adds a bitterness that counterbalances the lightness of the flavouring and provides enough body to take milk. It also has a citrus note to it. The tea is not that astringent but it is quite tannic though this too is counterbalanced by the cream in the flavouring. A nice blend of flavours and a nice change from the usual strawberry vanilla or strawberry caramel.

This sounds delicious. Where did you even get it though?

I ended up getting at Starsky’s a Baltic style grocery store at the Winston Churchill and Dundas location. They have 3 location in Mississauga, and Hamilton, but I’m not sure what is available at the other locations. They had a huge tea aisle with tons of loose tea from Polish companies and a few local ones. Occasionally I have seen it at HomeSense. Occassionally I’ve seen their teas at other independant grocery stores. There is a US online store but they don’t seem to offer this series of tea on it. Only their mnatures harmony series. There seems to be two distributors in the area who might either be able to sell to you directly or direct you to someone selling it:

http://tfb.ca/product/hyleys-tea/

This tea is part of their emotions series and is sold with tenderness a peach green tea.

This is the Starsky location closest to Toronto
http://www.starskycanada.com/aboutus.php?sits at Dundas St E and universal drive. Just west of Etobicoke Creek and a few intersections past West Mall.

Thanks! I’ll try and find them next time I’m in Toronto. It sounds lovely.
