From Yumchaa

Rooibos with Gingerbread spice, Almond, Cinnamon, Aniseed, Pepper, Cloves and Chocolate Chips.

Spicy but smooth with dark chocolate chips make this a fantastic Christmas tea to have either on it’s own or as a home-made Latte.

Thank you Scheherazade for this tea.

It has strong clove and aniseed flavours and as I sip it really is does remind me of Christmas. Though it’s not my favourite of flavours I still find myself enjoying it. I think it works well with the Rooibos base, keeps it light and with some sweetness. Besides the clove and aniseed I can taste cinnamon and pepper but the other ingredients are very subtle and I can’t really detect them specifically.

Not a bad blend at all, very Christmas appropriate.

It´s not you, cup of tea, it´s me. Seriously, you smell awesome and the ingredients read like a great idea. But I got a perhaps irrational dislike to aniseed (or liquorice, or anything of its family) and dear tea, it´s not going to work between us at all.

(nice rooibos base though)

Yep, anise/liquorice can really ruin a cup if you don’t like it. It’s usually all I can taste!

Ninavampi

Love the review! I get the relationship issue completely! And, if you are like me, anise/liquorice and I will never get along.

cteresa

yeah, not a aniseed/liquorice lover, or even friend here, so it´s not my cup – I think it is the first, and so far only Yumchaa blend which has not worked for me.

Hallieod

I’d been comparing this one to Chilli Chilli Bang Bang, which is unfair to almost any spicy rooibos, but noticed that it contained aniseed just last night. I share your feelings about it in teas, though I like liquorice itself just fine. Will try another cup to see if it’s strong enough to have been the problem!

cteresa

It just might be your cup of tea – the aniseed, liquorice thing is really personal (though maybe more of a hate thing in southern Europe. salmiakki, eurgh)

Hallieod

Oh, it’s not bad but I don’t like it all that much either. I realised I have exactly the same top two dislikes in teas as you – hibiscus and aniseed, and want to reassure you that I did NOT just copy you! Long-standing tastes but just starting to get serious about why I like or dislike a particular blend/flavour of tea.

cteresa

Don´t worry, great minds think alike (and we so agree on so much else!). Though I think a certain dislike for hibiscus is almost inevitable in almost tea lovers sooner or later :p

Hallieod

:) It does seem a very unnatural like to me too!

Right. Today I am endeavouring to stay calm. I will not let my job dictate how I feel.

Starting the day with a cup of Red Christmas, which will soon be a sipdown. I like it, although probably not so much that I’d seek out another bag next year. 100g over the last two has been enough of this one for the foreseeable future. It makes for a pleasant cup, but it’s not overwhelmingly different from all of the other cinnamon teas out there. Particularly at Christmas. It’s a good rooibos, though — not too woody or overpowering in its own right, and delicious with milk.

I got this along with a bag of my beloved Chilli Chilli Bang Bang, because it was limited edition and I didn’t notice the aniseed in there. (Or possibly hadn’t figured out that while I like anise/licorice fine as flavours themselves, I dislike them in most teas.) For a good few cups I thought it was just the unfair comparison with CCBB that stopped this being a winner, then read *cteresa*’s note and went “Aha! Aniseed!”, but then it started to grow on me. The anise flavour is just tempered enough by the strength of the other flavours (all favourites) that I like it. It’s not a problem that it’s limited edition, as long as CCBB comes back for the colder weather. But if not — there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth! (The new Red Chai has aniseed as its first ingredient – not cool, Yumchaa!)

Maybe I am just unreasonablle about the aniseed. or better said I am sure I am unreasonable – fennel and aniseed and liquorice is a perfectly respectable family. I tend to not think of myself as a picky eater but when it cames to tea, I do have unreasonable dislikes!

Hallieod

No, I don’t think there’s anything unreasonable about disliking any teas with aniseed or licorice in them! I’m just not consistent about my dislike, which is much worse!

I’m sad to say that I seem to be ‘getting over’ this tea. I still see how it is objectively tasty, if there is such a thing, but it’s just not working out for me anymore. I have gotten tired of it, I think, and it’s sad, because it was great while it lasted. I think it’s the rooibos and the anis that got to me in the end. I may just have to go back to black chais. Or maybe I could find a honeybush chai… now that would be something.

This was a bonus from my swap with Scheherazade! Thanks for the extra treat, Sarah.

I was a little anxious after reading reviews of this tea because I’m no fan of licorice and aniseed! Though I think I may have ended up with some of the bottom of the barrel here, as this was just a mildly spiced rooibos. Delicious with a splash of vanilla soy.

Scheherazade

I’ve never found it heavy on either liquorice or aniseed, personally. I mostly get cinnamon and mild mixed spice!

Memily

Yeah that’s what I got! It was lovely. Maybe they’ve changed the formulation or something?
