From Yogi Tea

Our Lemon Ginger tea is based on a traditional formula that supports digestion, eases minor stomach upset and provides a refreshing herbal pick-me-up. We use organic ginger, used for centuries by Ayurvedic practitioners to support digestion and warm the metabolism. The sourness of lemon promotes the secretion of digestive juices* and provides the perfect counterpoint to the piquant-sweet taste of ginger. Licorice and peppermint leaf add sophisticated nuance to the formula. Enjoy a cup of Lemon Ginger when your tummy needs a little taming, when you need to reinvigorate your body, or when you simply want a delicious, healthy drink.

Ingredients: Organic ginger root, organic lemongrass, natural lemon flavor, organic licorice root, organic lemon peel, organic peppermint leaf, organic black pepper, natural licorice flavor, citric acid.

My friend gave me a teabag of this tea because she didn’t like it. To be honest, I am drinking this tea tonight because of an upset stomach. Steeping, this tea became quite cloudy and had an almost overwhelmingly strong scent. The most pleasant part of the sip comes at the beginning when you get a burst of ginger and a bit of lemon. The bite smooths out into a sweet, very strange aftertaste. I am detecting a bit of licorice and something that tickles the throat. I wish that more lemon were present — I do enjoy that tart, strong lemon kick that is sometimes found in herbal teas. If I felt like I didn’t need this cup tonight, I honestly wouldn’t finish it.

I have the ginger one and the black pepper is very present. I use one bag for the whole pot, and add crystalized ginger and honey to smooth it out. When I’m done the box, I think I’ll try some other ginger tea!

Adding honey would have been a good idea.. I really didn’t like this tea at all. :) I’ve found that Yogi Teas are really peppery for some reason.

A loan from a friend for my upset stomach yesterday after lunch.
It’s more gingery than the regular ginger tea from Yogi. I’m not tasting a lot of lemon really, but there is certainly a bite to it.
Perhaps because of my new favorite Lemon Ginger Oolong, I was hoping for something similar, but it’s almost all ginger.
Still, not bad and it helped my “stummy” as my friend called it.

Love the spicy bite of licorice. I like to brew it strong and sip it throughout the day. Best on its own, but a touch of honey is nice too. This is my go-to herbal tea!

Sipdown (2620)!

Brewed this up last night and was immediately surprised by how much more bright and lemon-forward the mug was. I really expected more of a 50/50 representation of the two flavours. The ginger was still there, of course. I could especially taste and feel that tickle of ginger heat in the back end of the sip and aftertaste. It was an OK cup of tea for a bagged blend, but there was a sharp and almost metallic feeling quality to the lemon that docked a few points off for me.

Steeped with just boiling water for 9+ minutes. (Tried at 6 minutes before but not enough taste, bag recommends 7 minutes.) Served in enamel tin mug.

Notes of ginger and lemongrass on the nose. I’m not getting much lemon to be honest, perhaps this is just my palate. In retrospect with this comment, it may be better off with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice as one might add to a good black tea.

Unfortunately the thing that sticks to me with this tea is a syrupy sweet mouthfeel that lingers on the tongue. I have a poor sense of smell but this coating shines through that fact to re-coat my cheeks with each sip. Perhaps the ginger? But it doesn’t have any of the pleasant qualities that a good ginger chew might, which leads me down the path of feeling that this is a wellness tea instead of a pleasant herbal infusion.

That ginger though, I do enjoy. Far from the initial bite of a prominent herbal tea like tumeric, the ginger when steeped at 5 minutes creeps in.
Albeit at the finish of each sip, and after the drinker acknowledges the described coating, then in a flash it fades back.

These redeeming qualities of ginger within the tea raise the rating and add to the aroma/flavor but I can’t help leaving this on the shelf if there are other options as the tongue feel just gets ruined by the odd notes that pass over the tongue, and in not getting much lemon at all.

A quick aside from the commercial description; Yogi mentions “tart lemon” and “refreshing peppermint” right in their description alongside Ginger. Where are those flavors? It’s more like someone dropped a hard candy in hot water and threw some ginger on top. At least it’s relatively inexpensive.

My secret? Add a half shot of Brandy for a faux hot toddy.

On the first taste I got the strong ginger flavor and tickle on the tongue. As the ginger faded I got a weak taste of lemon peel, but it wasn’t strong enough to actually balance with the ginger flavor.

This was nice. An old friend brought this to me as a reconnecting gift (along with cookies), and it was a lovely tea to share with my partner. He doesn’t usually had many opinions about tea, but he was very excited about this one.

This is pleasantly gingery with a bit of bite. The lemon is there too, not overly tart. And then an intense sweetness from licorice, which I wasn’t expecting, but was tasty.
