Authentic Thai Iced Tea

I received this bagged iced tea as a gift from my sister in Oregon, and I really do appreciate it. I always love getting tea gifts even though I have several buttloads of the leaf.

As the water was getting hot I read the box-’Flavor with lemon or lime (I really like lime), Thai black tea, FD & C Yellow #6, and Vanilla. Huh? Uuhh Ohh….artificial coloring, and… {Sniff Sniff} arificial flavoring. :-[

The cup color was a very pretty deep orange in my glass, but it smelled artificial. I added sugar-much more than necessary, and added a little ice. I like some sugar in my iced tea sometimes, but this was WAAY to sweet. I am still tasting artificial vanilla-BOOO & hiss!

Even the additional sweetener couldn’t hide the artificial flavoring, and may have prevented me from tasting any tea. I was going to buy real limes, but maybe I’ll save a little money and go for the lime juice in a bottle. I need something more to help this tea!

My sister is a rather short, feisty person, with a great sense of humor, but if she reads this poor review, she could kick my butt, several times over!

I don’t know why I looked up “buttload” in the wee hours of the morning.

After reading the first definition, I couldn’t stop laughing! :)) Perhaps I was slap-happy. Anyway, it sure was more entertaining than this tea!

I’ve been in a small town in Texas at my parents house for the summer. Unfortunately, the restaurant options here are VERY limited. I’ve been missing my favorite tiny Thai restaurant and their delicious Thai Iced Tea and was just thinking about it today. Well, I made a Traveling Tea Box on another website (www.reddit.com/r/teaexchange). I just received it back today after it going all across the US and even to the UK and Japan. I’ve been looking through it and there are SO MANY teas in there. But then I saw this little tea bag hidden behind everything else and knew I had to make it first. It makes such a crazy fun orange color while steeping. Normally I don’t like super sweet teas, but this is the kind of tea that just HAS to be super sweet. It’s very good and a close second to the version from my favorite Thai restaurant. I will definitely be looking to buy more.

I brewed 5 bags in 6 cups of water with a half cup of natural sugar crystals. With some heavy cream, it is an almost identical replica of my favorite Thai restaurant’s brew. So lovely and perfectly balanced spice.

I have to preface this saying that I love Thai iced tea. It’s probably one of my first loves, and still my favorite iced tea. Anyway, Wangderm has come out with a great black tea to replicate the taste of the Jasmine green tea, milk and sugar in Thai iced tea. It tastes just like a good Thai iced tea, and you can even drink it hot. It’s very delicious.

Finished of this box of teabags that I bought at the supermarket. These are definitely decent for making Thai iced tea at home. I tried cold-steeping the last few bags, which didn’t work as well and resulted in a pleasant but somewhat weaker flavor. Definitely recommend steeping them hot and then pouring over ice before adding your milk of choice.

I like Thai iced tea – no milk – but I’ve never gotten it for home use before. It’s really tasty.

Ok, I know I complained about this being weak last time, when I used one bag for a standard size water glass.

So I used two tonight. Let me tell you, even after ice and milk to the rim of the glass, this was still super strong. Good lord. Too strong one might say. Definitely going to have to make it in a 24 oz container or something.

But it’s exactly what I hoped it would be. Orange, opaque, and spiced in a way I’ve never been able to figure out. Tastes like the bottled stuff but fresher. Hell yes.

I’ve only had Thai Iced Tea once, and it was a magical experience. So when I saw this tea bag in the box, I knew I had to check it out. And I have to say its pretty darn close to that magical substance. I didn’t have any milk/cream/ect but I imagine it would be spot on if I did. Plus this way I can add 0cal sweetener and not feel as bad about drinking it lol.

Definitely have to look into getting more of this stuff.
