I ordered this for 2 reasons. ONE…because I was restocking my new-to-me Black Teas and mainly because it’s a black tea from Mozambique. I LOVE trying teas from different regions and wanted more from Mozambique.

After reading Momo (if that’s your REAL name…sorry inside joke) and MOMO’s notes I decided to infuse twice the amount at around 1 minute instead of the time she stated and didn’t care for the nutmeg-punch.

Dry – I liked the black tea base aroma in this tea. After infusing it didn’t really smell much. It DOES brew VERY dark brown – near coffee color, really.

The fannings are REALLY fine.

The flavor is pretty standard, really. It’s not bad but it’s not overly memorable, either. It’s good to have on hand for guests who aren’t really into picking out specific traits of teas, I guess.

After a few moments I can pick up on a nutmeg flavor as well as a questionable and mysterious fruity hint at something…plum, perhaps, not completely sure, tho.

Overall…I did finish the cup and it’s alright. Not my favorite, tho! But doable!

TeaEqualsBliss

Interesting…Upton gave me an extra one of these…

hahaha when you capitalize it, I go from being peach in Japanese to an Italian auto racing company…both are why I went with this for a pseudonym hahaha

Wow I am the first to review this.
Well when I ordered my sample it was sort of a quick decision – I was ordering teas for someone else from upton and decided to get a few I had not tried before for myself. This one caught my eye however I had not previously looked it up here on Steepster.
When I opened the package and poured out some of the leaf I was like WHAT THE????
Tiny little grounds like coffee.
Odd!
It was like I opened up a bag of fannings from some cruddy tea bag.
Anyway … I brewed it.
A nice malty aroma, slightly sweet fruity flavor, lightly floral.
Interesting cleansing flavor of spring water.
I will play with this one some more but I like it!
I mean I would not have expected such great tasting tea from this “leaf”.

I find so many great teas on Upton, I’m surprised there aren’t more reviews for their teas! Great company

Indigobloom

The tiny ‘grounds’ mean the tea has been CTC processed. Cut, torn, and curled. I like the way it rolls of my tongue :P

I agree James!
Indigobloom – thank you! Something new I have leaned now :)

I love Upton Teas, Darlene’s Teaports has severeral ctc teas also :)

Azzrian

I would order from them more often if their site were not so danged strange but I always seem to enjoy what I do get from them.

I have no idea why I ordered this. At all. That would also be why I’ve been holding onto it since May.

Nothing about the description of it even vaguely sounds good to me so I REALLY have no idea why I bought it.

I gave it a chance anyway because Upton’s BOP Margaret’s Hope is pretty good. But that’s a broken leaf…according to wikipedia, this is from the lowest level of the fanning grade.

Makes me sound mean and snobby but…tastes like it! I steeped it just for 2 minutes and it tastes like nutmeg mixed with malty dirt. Not a fan.

TeaEqualsBliss

eeeek
I might have just ordered that!

TheTeaFairy

Momo, you’re not being snobby, you’re just a good tea connoisseur!

LiberTEAS

While I’d argue that wikipedia is not always correct, and also that a small CTC or broken leaf does not always indicate that it is a low grade of tea (I’ve had some pretty remarkable small cut or broken leaf teas), if you don’t like what you’re tasting, you don’t like it, and there’s no arguing that. It doesn’t make you a snob. :)

Backlog:

Thank you TeaEqualsBliss for sending me some of this tea. It’s a very fine chop on this CTC tea. It’s a pretty severe cut on these … it’s more like a superfine grind on a coffee rather than a tea leaf.

But despite the fine chop, it is still a really decent tea. The flavor is smooth and inviting. It is rich … with a mild to moderate astringency that develops to a stronger astringency by mid-cup.

Nice malty tone to this cup. Earthy, fruity with hints of warm spice.

It’s an enjoyable cup.
