The inspiration behind this blend… The story goes that Liquorice Allsorts were created through a tray of sweets which got dropped and mixed together… A little like blending you might say. We like the art of blending, so our master blenders have infused top quality, whole leaf Earl Grey tea, bursting with bergamot flavour, with the flavours of Liquorice Allsorts to give this classic a twist, for a sweet, yet floral, refreshing taste.

When I first heard about this tea I knew I had to try it, since the list of flavors pushes all the right buttons for me.

For the most part it lives up to its promise. The dry leaves have the unmistakable fragrance of bergamot with the coconut & licorice singing backup, and the coconut comes forward while steeping. Tasted all together, they meld harmoniously in such a way that I can’t easily tease out the individual flavors, and leave a nice long-lasting aftertaste.

This cup was a bit overly astringent and bitter (I steeped it for the recommended maximum of 3 minutes; will try 2m 30s next time), but this was easily remedied with a small squeeze of agave. It takes milk reasonably well (go easy, though!) but I prefer it without.

Overall, it’s a very unique, interesting tea that I’m sure I will buy again.

I have to say, I’m not over-keen on this tea. I bought it thinking it sounded like a fabulous combination, but in actuality I found it a bit of a let down. Thinking of Liquorice Allsorts put me in mind of a sweet, coconutty taste, with a strong kick of dark, molasses-like liquorice. That’s not what I got from this tea. Instead, it was Earl Grey with a kind of bitter, smoky overtone. Not at all what I imagined.

The Earl Grey base in this tea is the best thing about it. It’s strong, robust, and nicely flavoured with bergamot. It’s a shame the flavouring ruins it — I had imagined the combination could be very complementary.

Still, never mind. My tea journey continues.
