From Twinings

Inspired by the magic of birdsong in the bush, as day breaks over the land, this delicious tea has been created to get New Zealand of to a greats start every morning. New Zealand Breakfast Tea is a full-bodied and satisfying blend, with generous malty flavours. You will taste a little smokiness, reminiscent of campfires and billies coming to boil, offset by subtle floral notes. This is a truly unique blend, unlike any other in the world.

I finally got some more of this in a round robin, and a dear friend is sending me some loose leaf of this as well! Yay! Even though I oversteeped and accidentally added too much milk, it’s still delicious! Super smooth, malty, and some bright sweetness- love!

Manomanomanoman, that sounds good!

Miss Starfish

I was so impressed with this tea! Glad to see it’s getting love overseas.

Do you know if it’s available/on sale in the U.S.?

IrishBreakfastLass

I don’t think it is. I’m getting mine from a friend who has a sister in NZ, I believe, and from a round robin in a knitting group on Ravelry. When the round robin went around the first time, I took a couple of the bags of this, as it sounded yummy and unusual. When it came around the second time, with MORE NZ tea added, I snagged a couple more and sent out a message to the group, begging the owner of the NZ tea to ‘hook me up’ with her source. lol

ashmanra

Sandy lived there. Maybe she has a connection who will send it to us. Sandy?

Miss Starfish

If sources still aren’t plentiful in a couple months, I’d be happy to help out. Apologies that I can’t stick my hand up immediately :(

Never knew this was ever available as a loose-leaf tea! I’m in NZ and these days it’s teabag only from Twinings

This tea was a result of a nationwide contest to create a popular breakfast blend. While only supposed to be produced for a limited time, it proved so popular that Twinings introduced it to their normal lineup.

I’m so glad they did.

Twinings heartily suggests adding milk and sugar, which is what I’m drinking right now. MmMm. Yum.

Previously, I have had this tea straight (at 3 minutes) and loved it. The key word I want to impress on this review is “smooth”. This tea is so very very smooth. Not a trace of bitterness (or astringency), even when over steeped (oops! second cup was 7 minutes). The scent of Manuka Honey is very fitting for a NZ Breakfast. There’s a bit of smoke, which reminds me of school camps in the bush and the teacher’s brewing their tea on the fire.

Lovely on it’s own, or with milk and sugar.

Edit: Wow, this has turned into a staple for me. I never would have guessed. It’s SO good. When I start swapping I’m going to make all of you try this, seriously. I know some look down on Twinings, but HOT DAMN this is excellent!

does it come in loose leaf?

Miss Starfish

I just called to check and yes it does! They must have been out when I picked this up. Good news regardless.

I am having this nice cuppa today thanks to my friend Sandy, who deserted us for the wilds of New Zealand! It’s okay, we get to Skype virtual tea parties now and then and we get her house and dogs! :)

First of all, NOT what I was expecting. I did not read Sandy’s reviews first, so I was looking for a pretty regular breakfast tea. I sipped and thought, “Christmas tea?” But now I realize it is probably lemon I am tasting, very Lady Grey and I haven’t had that in ages! The citrus notes made me think of Christmas tea, which I really only drink near Christmas. A good cuppa, I added sugar but not milk. Twinings recommends a 3 minute steep but perhaps that is for the bags. I didn’t know that when I made this so it got about four minutes and isn’t stewed. Perhaps there is a touch of bergamot? A little….very little…clove? Probably not on that last one, but I am not sure! Good tea! Thank you, Sandy!

Sandy

i brewed a cuppa this afternoon looking for the citrus. I am not getting any, I think your sample sample may have been tainted by the Tokyo Lime. But it makes me want to try it with lemon now.

Sandy

i added lemon and it is really very good

ashmanra

My dry leaves that remain still smell citrusy, and since the ingredient list says it contains bergamot it should. But maybe I am picking up on the Tokyo Lime. I will try it again from this batch of leaves but perhaps letting them “air out” a bit first.

Received this in a swap from a friend in New Zealand. A breakfast tea with a hint of bergamot! It was a very full, very smooth cuppa, minus the bitterness I sometimes taste in other breakfast teas. Even the second cup from the pot, which had been steeping longer, didn’t taste bitter. Tried it with a bit of sweetener, and then with milk, and it was a true morning delight. I’ll be enjoying this tea a lot.

It is interesting how you can taste different things at different times. I didn’t prepare the tea any differently this time nor am I eating anything but today I can taste just a little smokiness in this tea. Maybe I should brew other tea and see if I pick up any nuance I have missed before. Maybe I have a new super power! (because I have so many old super powers)

ashmanra

That happens to me all the time! I think it has to do with there being so many variables in the process like brewing temp, length of time, temp of tea when you start drinking, how much milk and sugar you add – or don’t add.

As for super powers, you have the ability to drink fluids like a camel without taking a potty break! All those hours in surgery and on rounds! You can get to the tea shop in half the time it takes us to drive there. (We won’t go into HOW.) And your dogs can make entire batches of cookies DISAPPEAR! :)

Sandy

That’s the dogs super power, the counter snatch. Man, they are fast and sneaky. I do have super bladder. Umm I think u tend to get a little lost with that GPS of yours, it has nothing to do with my lead foot.

My kids brought me back this one from New Zealand and I gotta say I really like it. I have the loose variety and have had it for breakfast the last few mornings. I steep for 3 minutes for the first steep and 4 for the second. It’s usually done for after the second steep. Nice smooth morning blend mixed with a spash of milk and maybe alittle sugar. Wish they sold it here in the states. My daughter said its really reasonably priced!

I wish I had picked up a bigger box of this to bring home. Sigh! Purchased while in NZ, and I used it as my to-go breakfast tea at the hotels I was staying at, and I used up probably half the bags. Nice and strong, hurray for black tea.
