A review of Ruby Red Chai (Organic Spiced Rooibos) by Trader Joe’s

This is a tea that I can return to when wanting something with a good kick to it. Using 1 tea bag with 8 ounces of hot water, I bring water to full boil, and then I take one tea bag and place this in my cup and pour the water over tea bag and steep for about five minutes.

Tea has a very lively fragrance of ginger, cloves, allspice, cardamom, nutmeg and cinnamon and all of this makes this a lovely bouquet with a very pleasant aroma. It is a good tea for the nose.

Tea’s color is that of a golden sunset; a ruby glowing chai and when tasted it is filled with the spices from around the globe…ginger is present as well as the cloves and cinnamon with the allspice reigning in after ginger. It is a cloying of the spices with not just one winner but all…like a chamber quarter perfectly in –tune and timing.

That being said, you know you are drinking a cup of chai tea, it is very rich with many spices.

I tried this hot and didn’t particularly enjoy it. The rooibos had no flavor, and the spices were completely underwhelming. After it cooled to room temperature, I took a few sips to see if it was still bland. As it turns out, the spices really pop when cool. The cinnamon and ginger are the most predominant flavors, with the cloves and nutmeg having a larger presence in the aftertaste. I’ll kill off the rest of the box by making a few pitchers of iced tea at home. At $1/2L, I really can’t complain.

I agree with its developing spiciness after cooling, though I predominantly smell and taste the cloves. Reminds me of clove cigarettes that people used to smoke in high school.

This is one of those Rooibos teas that I really enjoy. Especially, right now because I’m pregnant. I usually drink this tea nice and warm but I forgot about it and now it’s a little chilly. Surprisingly, the cup is still a bit warm though. Flavor is also good. Which I think I would have been sad if it wasn’t.

For you chai drinkers you will enjoy this one. Not many other companys come this close to making a good Rooibos chai. Chai should be a bit spicy and this one does the drink without letting the Rooibos cover it.

This is some seriously good stuff. All the spices are culinary, I may just use the dry tea in a recipe sometime. Price is decent: box 20 bags for $1.99, about 10¢ per cup. The cat was curious so I let him lick a drop off my finger; I definitely wouldn’t do that with a caffeinated tea, but this is just spice.
I wouldn’t call it “Ruby red.” It’s more like a deep spice/clay red, Moroccan red. Beautiful colour, though. Henna fans should take note, this tea would be a good base water for it.
Taste is very gentle. I’m not a clove fan, but the only indication it’s there is a mild tingle on the tongue and the upper part of the throat.
I’ll have to to take away points for packaging the teabags in plastic, though >:( Yes, it protects the flavour but we need to cut back on plastic! Follow Celestial Seasonings’ example, wrap ’em in waxed paper.

I bought this at Trader Joe’s a few days ago and am just getting around to trying it now. It’s a paper teabag which is definitely one drawback but the price was super cheap.

I decided to steep two teabags up in a large mug. Yeah it definitely tastes like paper to me, oh well. Aside from that the strongest element in here is the clove which seems VERY strong, it’s almost to the point of bitterness. I don’t really understand all the positive reviews of this because I think it’s a bit icky but nothing ventured, nothing gained, so they say. I did add soymilk and a teaspoon of sugar but it isn’t one of my favorite rooibos blends at all… hopefully I will manage to finish the box.

This blend is way too heavy on the clove for my taste. It lives at the office, where I hardly ever drink it because the flavor taints my travel mug. I brought a bag home just so I can review it properly. Turns out there isn’t much more to say than what I’ve said before. The clove just overwhelms everything else. I tried adding rice milk to mellow it out, but that did not help. The rice milk might actually have made the clove even more prominent. As rooibos chais go, this one’s pretty unimpressive.

Calming, strong flavor. This is perfect with biscoff cookies.
