Assam, India is renowned for producing full-flavored, malty black teas. Our Assam Black Tea No. 1 is no exception. It’s not bad, it’s not great…sort of middle of the road for me in terms of assams. What does that mean? I’ll finish it up, but not order more and it’s another one to cross off my list of “all the teas!” :) thanks terri!

Aroma turns out to be persistently sweet, at least this time. Every sip is extremely enjoyable. I think there’s a great black tea lover hidden inside of me!
It’s like 2:40 PM but it’s morning for me. It really is. My assam tea understands it.
This tea came from the lovely Terri Harplady in our BBBB traveling box. It is a pretty decent Assam, but nothing about it makes it amazing. Definitely a solid cup and holds up against my cream and honey. I love the puriTea’s little sample packages, but I haven’t really loved any of their teas yet. I have a couple others from Terri left to try, so maybe one of those will win me over. And if they don’t, oh well, it’s not like I need to buy any more tea for the next 100 years anyway.
I do love their sample packages, but I tend to agree. Although their teas are decent, they aren’t spectacular. I’m hoping the next teas I send will knock your socks off! LOL!
Ha ha! I have the same thought about the tea I just sent you. That’s why I wanted to get it out so fast. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts and I hope you can try the chocolate :-)

First cup of the day, but I feel that I under-leafed this one, so I’m not gonna say much about it yet. Also, I haven’t drank my nettles for a few days & the downside of yesterday’s beautiful outdoor wedding is the allergy backlash that is muting my taste buds this morning. Nonetheless, I do feel a promising fullness & hints of a tea that is nicely bassy, if you know what I mean.

We went to breakfast & I brought the rest of this sample along. I estimate it at 2 tsp, & it made for a nice cup. Nothing spectacular, but enjoyable. I’d like to say more about it, but that was hours ago, so that’s it for now.

Date of Purchase/Amount of Leaf/Date of Steeping: Bought during their Black Friday sale near the end of 2011; 3 – 4 TSP sample; steeped once on 1-29-2012.
Appearance and Aroma of dry leaf: No discernible aroma; standard look for an Assam.
Brewing guidelines: < No information noted on teapot used >; stevia added; my standard Chinese red tea steeping times and temperatures; four steepings.
Color and Aroma of tea liquor: Malty aroma, dark amber color.
Flavor of tea liquor (by steeping):
1st: sweet, malty flavor
2nd: good
3rd: still good
4th: decent, but not enough to attempt a 5th
Appearance and aroma of wet leaf: Standard mid-grade CTC leaf; malty.
Value: $2 for the sample (no more than 4 TSP): I find that to be very pricy for a small sample; otherwise it’s $12 / 4 OZ.
Overall: I liked it, my wife liked it: a good Assam. As I mention in my review of The Puritea, I was hoping for more Tea in this sample. I don’t think it’s likely I will buy this tea from them again, as there are plenty of Assams that are higher in quality and priced at least as good.
Although, I only sampled this black I could tell that it would hold up to milk and sugar very well just from smelling the dry leaf. I enjoyed this and it wasn’t even a fancy tea. Goes to show it doesn’t need to be fancy to be tasty if you just find the right one. I found this to be smooth, slightly robust, and a bit of a mouthful in the best way possible.
I figured since everyone else cues the bayonets and timpanis when they de-“cupboard” a tea, I might as well too. I needed something extra strong this morning; had to work on Black Friday, and two furry friends kept me up all darn night. I brewed two tablespoons of the stuff. I think this was the way it was meant to be had. I only gave it a “fairly good” rating before because I thought it lacked something in the forefront. I figured out what that was…a kick in the pants. The astringent middle was still there, but the malt aspect dominated thanks to the larger quantity of leaves. This is the coffee of tea right here. Too bad I’m out of it now.
2 tablespoons? Oh, wow. I’d be shaking from the caffeine rush!
Considering I only got three hours of sleep, not even close to shaking. Plus, it was a 16oz brew. So, not quite a Russian-style concentrate. (heh)

Sharp, strong and full of that fat, heavy bass we all want in an Assam. A hearty singular malt is well ornamented with flavors of brown sugar, spices and metal. Big and bestial like a bronze war elephant.
I really wanted to like their teas, & they are ok, but none of them live up to the description, & they don’t look at all like the photos. Oh well, at least they don’t taste bad. I think maybe I’m just too use to awesome over the top teas, haha
