Received a sample in one of my orders from The Persimmon Tree Tea Company.
There is another database for their teas here on Steepster under The Persimmon Tree as well.
Just sayin.

anyway .. strange thing is I get a mint flavor in this tea that is fairly strong.
Its not a tingle your tongue flavor but certainly picked up in the nostrils and on the mid part of the tongue.

The Persimmon Tree recommends a steep temp of 195 rather than 212.

This has a very bright juicy mouthfeel. I like that.

A robust tea though.

Not normally what I would be drinking at this time of day / night, but I was wanting to try something new from them.

There is a touch of a floral undertone in this tea but ever so delicate.

A nice black tea.

What I learned today. Ceylon is not my favorite black tea. I didn’t like this at all. Really astringent, reminds me of over steeped red rose tea bags. I don’t know enough to judge if this is what all ceylon is like or if it’s just this version. This was not for me. Put the last in the fridge to cold steep. Hoping it is better that way.

Edit: If it’s possible, I thought this was even worse cold. Nope can’t do it. I don’t like it.

Don’t give up on Ceylon! LOL! High grown ones turn me off but I love the low grown. Maybe you can get a sample of Nina’s? I hear it is really good. I get a great one in Chaoel Hill, NC called Ceylon Extra Fancy that has the biggest leaves you have ever seen!

Thanks ashmanra. I’ll take your advice and not give up on them, will try a couple more. I didn’t really expect this to be high end black tea, but was disappointed that it was almost undrinkable. Will try and source some from another vendor.

dry leaves – smells almost florally till the mint hits you

liquor very light, not like a black tea at all mild minty smell

overwhelmingly minty flavor, liquor feels thin like a keemun… but the thing that stands out is the mint possibly with a slight floral taste to it

i cant help but think they misslabeled this tea, as its nothing like the other ceylon ive had… its also very light for a black tea, by looks (liquor) it might be mistaken for a mature white tea /dirty yellow liquor

if you are thinking about getting it, keep in mind the mintyness. as i like mint i didnt mind this tea, although i do prefer my true blacks.

Ceylon is like the granddaddy of tea. I have had it a thousand times in everything from breakfast teas to Earl Grey and most flavored points in between. I slightly remember having it straight back in my boil the crap out of the tea bag and leave it in the cup days. I seriously don’t recall ever having it in unblended and unflavored loose leaf. This leaf looks more like Darjeeling or Nepali tea. It has red, green, and brown leaf pieces in it. At 195 F for 3 minutes I get a copper/orange cup that is way lighter than I expected. There is only a small amount of bite with the lowered temperature. It is definitely not abrasive. I don’t notice any noticeable dryness. This is mellow, fruity, a hint of floral. It seems kind of woodsy, leafy, maybe a touch earthy. After posting on my blog I noticed The Persimmon Tree lists this as an afternoon tea. That is exactly how I described it. I did not detect any of the mint a couple of the reviews here mentioned. Those reviews are a couple years old. Possibly their’s was tainted or just a different harvest, as I did not pick up on it at all.
