This organic red jade black tea or ‘hong Yu’ hails from Taiwan, and is fast growing in popularity among connoisseurs of the finest black teas. Grown in the beautiful setting of the Sun Moon lake area of central Taiwan, Hong Yu Red Jade Organic is a premium tea that is grown and harvested in strictly limited quantities, and demand consistently exceeds supply.
This tea exists thanks to collaboration between local tea farmers and the Taiwan Tea Research and Extension Station, and comes from a tea plant that is a cross between the prized local wild tea strain and traditional Assam.
Hong Yu Red Jade Organic is hand picked in the traditional manner in late April, and gathered in the early morning before briefly being wilted and bruised before being left to oxidise on carefully supervised woven bamboo trays for a full day. Finally, light roasting finishes off the preparation of the leaves, producing a rich and complex brew with fruity notes and a light hint of honey, in a tea that is less astringent and bitter than Indian pure Assam teas.

This is a lovely spider leg tea, again courtesy of Virginia :). The leaves smell quite fruity and a bit malty, almost like a fruit beer or a lambic. The brew is a reddish brown, but the taste is mainly figs with apricot highlights over a solid malty base. Again, this really reminds of a fruity beer tea…or tea beer? It’s a really bright, fruity tea that really stood out for me. Yum!

This tea called out to me because i have found through trial and error that i MUCH prefer tealux’s straight teas to their flavoured ones. I hadn’t tried this one yet so i figured i should give it a go. this tea is really nice and smooth, however it’s not for me. There’s a taste here that i don’t like but i suspect that others would love this. I steeped this alongside another from tealux and it is divine! while this one is just ok. I still enjoyed this but the taste just doesn’t woo me like the tones in the other cup. I can’t quite explain what the taste is, but it’s similar, though not quite, to the roasty oolong taste that i am not a huge fan of. if that makes sense haha

Figs and dates, not just “notes” but a true taste, easily identifiable. The presence of honey is to be found, it’s a sweet cup.
It’s a little earthy, with a light astringent finish.
This is always in my cupboard, and now that I’m reorganizing all my tea stash with colour coordinated tins, it’s so easy to find! With this new set up, it will be so much easier to find and have ALL of my teas, instead of always reaching for the same ones…

Cameron, I so love dried fruits as well! I bought a flavoured fig tea at Harney & Sons recently, it’s a new blend called Capri, it’s so yummy, you’d probably like it also :-)

HHHHMMMMmmmmm – you make this sound like one I should REALLY like – I went and looked in the tasting notes – yep, I wrote about it twice – both were just “yeah whatever”?!? I didn’t write ANYTHING about fruit. What is it with me and Taiwan blacks? Wish I could find the “amazing” that you do. It really does make me happy that you enjoy them. :))
The dry leaf is reminiscent of apricots and shiny new leather. I mean that in the best possible way. The steeped leaves give off a strong smell of chocolate, malt, cream and a tiny hint of bergamot.
It’s a very good tea, sweet, very malty with a hint of wood. I wouldn’t say it is overly complex, or that I’m completely blown away by it, but I can see myself drinking it on a regular basis.
