Genmaicha is a traditional Japanese Green tea that mixes Sencha tea and roasted brown rice. ‘Genmai’ is Japanese for ‘Brown Rice’ and ‘cha’ is ‘Tea’, together you get Genmaicha – Brown Rice Tea. The quality of Genmaicha is determined by the ratio of rice to tea, and in the case of this blend, there is a very high tea content to rice, allowing you to enjoy the flavour of the Sencha, with the subtle rice undertone. Together they produce a pleasantly smooth taste that can be enjoyed hot or iced, and alone or a part of a meal.
This tea is certified organic, with both the tea and the rice grown with no chemical pesticides used in cultivation. The organic nature of this tea enhances the natural flavour of the tea, and preserves the natural nutrients inherent to the ingredients.

This is so good. It is a great example of what genmaicha is and should be. I would really suggest this one by TeaFrog if you are wanting to try genmaicha because it is smooth, buttery, and tastes like popcorn that is perfectly popped, not at all burnt or stale. I love drinking genmaicha in the afternoons and think that it is the one type of tea that so far I can NOT live without. Good job, TeaFrog! This is a perfect example of a classic.

Toasty rice infused with a bit of green tea. I mostly taste the brown rice in this. The actual “tea” taste is very “quiet”. Soft.
Luckily, I love toasted rice and “roasty” flavors, so I think this tea delicious. Genmaicha and matcha were what had me started on this tea tasting journey, so I think I will always have a “soft spot” for them, whatever version I find them in.
This genmaicha is particularly mild and smooth, yet tasty. I detect the flavor of browned rice in abundance. It’s almost like I’m drinking a pure hojicha, with its toasty flavors!
No astringency or bitterness whatsoever. Very drinkable any time of day.
I’m going through a toasted/roasted tea thing right now so I was excited to try this. I am thoroughly enjoying my sample package from TeaFrog, which arrived yesterday.
This tea definitely has an overtone of roastiness from the rice that takes me back to my Puffed Rice cereal/rice cakes days. While those two foods annoy the heck out of me (as Styrofoam should) the rice in this tea doesn’t. Instead, it adds an interesting dimension of aroma and flavor, along with a pleasant lingering aftertaste.
I was thinking this tea came along because someone, long ago, wanted roasted green tea without roasting the actual tea leaves, but the story I’ve read is that it was accidentally created when monks roasting tea leaves in cauldrons that already had rice in them ended up liking the combo. I like it too. Time for cup #2.
For years, I’ve been drinking Genmaicha that I’ve been purchasing at an Asian supermarket in a nearby city. Super tasty, yet incredibly cheap. I chose this one as my free sample from TeaFrog just to see if there would be a difference.
The dry leaf smells pretty much the same as everything else I’ve had, but I do notice a slight difference in taste. Actually, the smell of the steeped tea is more roasted than everything else that I’ve tried. The taste is exquisite. Again, I get more of that soothing roasted taste from the brown rice. It’s truly a comforting tea, and as mentioned in previous reviews, Genmaicha is always a staple. It’s also always been a tea that automatically makes me feel healthier. I’m still sick with a pesky cold so right now, Genmaicha is a must.
I just ran out of my supermarket Genmaicha, and because I’m currently living in a rural area and don’t know when I’ll make a trip to the city next, I just may suck it up and order this online despite the fact that it’s twelve times more expensive. It’s really worth it!
You made the comment that once you had this tea, you wanted more. I am that same way! I wanted to order from the Tea Frog, but the shipping was more than the tea! So I ended up ordering from Upton Tea instead, I hope it is as good as this is from the TF!
Yeah, genmaicha is were it is at. I am looking forward to ordering from Den’s Tea since the company has great reviews and cheap prices. I think I like my genmaicha a little more bold all around than the one from TF although TF’s version is a good example of what genmaicha is.
