Excitement always prevails when it’s time to visit this magnificent garden during our spring-time rounds as it has become our benchmark garden to rate the quality of a season. The craftsmanship and care both in the garden and in the factory of the people behind this tea are exemplary and well-recognized amongst local tea makers. What we experienced that is sealed in this Lot 723 goes well above our usual expectations! You probably never heard of the Shibi tea producing area before now but you might have already experienced drinking some tea coming from there if you already appreciate Alishan or Shanlinxi High-Mountain Oolong Teas. Very often Shibi teas are sold under these designations. Whether this is a legitimate practice or not is not what we wish to debate, but it still remains a fact. It is true that the Shibi Township lies somewhat between both famous terroirs. Nonetheless, we think it deserves to shine by its own! This superb spring production is smooth and delicate and very we’ll balanced between the floral notes, the crisp pastoral ones and the sweet mellow finish. Clean is the word that comes to mind when you sip a cup, or many, as this tea is quite inviting to indulgence. Rarely do we mention it, but this tea is also “clean” in the strict definition of the word. It comes from a garden that is certified to meet the new EU norm for low pesticide use: one of the most stringent norm of the kind right now. Another good reason to indulge! This spring 2018 offering goes beyond our usually high expectations. The liqueur peaks with succulent notes of spring flowers and smooth vegetal nuances that culminate with a silky smooth finish. This spring’s is thick and generous in well-balanced organoleptic material that are sure to give many satisfying infusions of joy in the cup.

Taiwan Tea CraftsBuying this tea is pretty much a given whenever I order from TTC. Shibi was the first Taiwanese oolong that really floored me and it’s remained a sentimental favorite ever since. I love its sublime florals, the luscious tropical fruit notes, and the cha qi. During a good harvest, few gao shans can beat it.
This particular harvest once again exhibited some excellent qualities but was a bit more finicky to brew. The beautiful florals were still there. It opened with notes of daffodils, magnolia, and white peony. The mouthfeel was silky and soft though fairly light. A couple of times I used water that was too hot early on and I got some vegetal-artichoke flavor and a little bitterness. Later infusions had some mineral and balsalm notes, honeycomb, and a hint of melon. Although there were some tropical aromas in the wet leaf, the brewed tea had more of a generic fruity flavor.
My main problem with this tea is it faded too early. After the 3rd steep, it flattened and tasted like any other high mountain tea. This harvest wasn’t as mind-blowing as Shibi oolongs of past, but that’s the nature of the beast when it comes to single origin teas. Thankful that TTC has samples to allow me to continue purchasing this tea without committing to a huge amount.
