If some might still remember, we used to carry a heavily roasted GABA oolong made from Cui Yu varietal in the winter of 2017. That tea was soon sold out and a lot of people miss it. Although this “Night Jade” is not that tea anymore, it is certainly a better tea no matter in the taste or GABA effect.

As we tirelessly emphasizing, once a oolong tea is properly made traditionally, it will have better “GABA” effect than GABA tea. This Cui Yu varietal is no exception even though it is the most easily forgotten varietal in the tea world. It is not as cool as Qin Xing Oolong, nor is it well-known as its sister Jin Xuan, making this unique varietal in Taiwan an orphan in the tea world.

We processed this lovely “Night Jade” planted in Minjian County’s Kanjiao Village along with our tea farmer Mr. Chen. He is a hardworking farmer who has been cultivating some of the best tea trees with natural farming practice. We were super grateful that he was willing to process the tea with us until 2:00 AM that day, and spent several weeks roasting this hard-earned oolong tea. The result turned out to be something more remarkable than “Ink Jade,” and thus the name “Night Jade.”

Not only this “Night Jade” has a strong GABA effect without the GABA taste (if that is what you are looking for), it also carries a special nectar character from our elegant fermentation technique. In short, this tea has both taste and effect like the oolong teas we have been creating so far, and it will be the great successor to that “Ink Jade” GABA tea to you.

Night Jade is a very warm, mineral, and nectar-like tea. My main issue with it is the somewhat light body. I am also not the biggest fan of the profile, but there are times when it would fit well. On the other hand I enjoy the super calming qi and the tea has a good longevity too.

The association that comes to mind when smelling the leaves is peach blossoms and beeswax. During the session I also detected aromas of mussels, hazelnut, cardamon, strawberry, and kale.

As I mentioned, the taste is mineral and nectar-like, but not very complex at all. There are notes of rapeseed, wood, berries, and caramel. The aftertaste is then quite sweet with a strong beeswax note and a mild cooling sensation.

In spite of the lighter body that doesn’t fit the tea well imo, the slightly effervescent liquor has a pleasant soothing and numbing mouthfeel.
