From Suffuse Tea

Red Rooibos Tea suffused with Sceletium is a natural relaxant with a hint of Rooibos.

A lovely texture in the mouth and a rich finish elevate mood and give a general feeling of well being.

The mood-elevating action of Sceletium Tortuosum is caused by a number of alkaloids including mesembrine, mesembrenol and tortuosum, which interact with the brain’s dopamine and serotonin receptors. Mesembrine, especially, has been shown to be a potent serotonin uptake-inhibitor. The research results have shown that sceletium has a remarkable ability to effectively treat symptoms of anxiety.

In addition to sceletium’s common use for stress and mental fatigue, it has been used as a natural supplement for mood elevation, reduction of anxiety, stress and tension and energy enhancement

Lesser benefits include appetite suppression and anti-depressant (Pharmaceutical Biology 1998. Vol. 36. Pp 173-179)

Sutherlandia
Sutherlandia frutescens is a traditional herbal remedy that has enjoyed a long history of safe use. There are four key compounds that contribute to the efficacy of this medicinal plant: the non-protein amino-acid L-canavanine, pinitol, GABA and asparagine. In addition, a novel triterpenoid glucoside has been isolated and characterized with its utility still to be determined.

L-canavanine: There are significant levels of this compound in sutherlandia leaves. This potent amino-acid is an L-arginine antagonist with documented anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-cancer activities (Swaffar 1995; Crooks 1994).

The anti-viral activity includes anti-influenza and anti-retrovirus (Green 1988). L-canavanine is also a selective inhibitor of inducible nitric oxide synthase, and therefore has possible application in the treatment of septic shock and chronic inflammation (Anfoss, G. et a11999; Levy, B et aI1999).

Sutherlandia powerfully assists the body to mobilize its own resources to cope with diverse physical and mental stresses, and should therefore more correctly be known as an adaptogenictonic.

Thanks go to LauraR for the chance to try this one.

This smells and tastes like rooibos, I can’t really taste the sceletium. It is quite weak, and I only made a small cup of this – 200ml with one bag. I didn’t really feel any relaxing effects from the sceletium either.

This stuff is supposed to be a natural relaxant. When I sample this I was a bit wound up and needed to get up earlier than normal in the morning, so I decided to give it a shot. The flavor is nothing great. It mostly tastes like a mild bodied or watered down rooibos. This might be remedied by doubling up on tea bags though. However, when I went to bed I fell asleep quickly and slept through the entire night. Should credit be given to the sceltium? I am thinking maybe so… This would get an even higher rating if it was tastier.
