From Steepster

Asam is home to big, full bodied black teas and this is a classic from the region – a perfect cup right out of bed or as an afternoon pick me up. Our Assam Breakfast is sturdy enough to take milk but is wonderful on its own as well.

Sweeter and lighter than I expect from an archetypal Assam, with only the faintest characteristic malty notes on the back end and increasing slightly as it cools, but a pleasant cup. Slightly floral, light-medium body. I normally enjoy adding milk to my Assams, but this one, with its more delicate character, seems to me to want to be drunk plain. (Note that I inherited this tea, unopened, from another tea lover’s stash and that I’m drinking it three years after its initial release, so it may or may not taste now as it did then…) It tasted just as good on a second infusion at the same temperature and steeping time as the first, which is another point in its favor.

I am really glad this isn’t bitter – it is super flavorful and smooth. I drank it with almond milk, and it was perfect to wake me up this morning.

Backlog:

A very smooth Assam. A bit smoother than I usually expect from an Assam. Assam usually is a hefty tasting tea, robust and just bordering on the edge of becoming bitter, but I didn’t get that from this tea, in fact, it might be a little smoother than I want my Assam teas to be. At least my “breakfast” type Assam teas.

Don’t take that as my saying I didn’t like this, because enjoyed it and it’s a really good Assam, but its not one I’d reach for as the first cup of the day. I like my first cup to be just a wee bit edgier than this one is, but again, that’s not to knock this tea because I really, really enjoyed it. It’s smooth, rich, delicious, malty and just … wonderful. I’d save this one for late morning or early afternoon!

One of my favorites from the Steepster Select offerings. Strong and bold. A wonderful afternoon tea!
