Recently became a consultant for Steeped Tea and in order to tell people what I think of their tea I think it is only right to test out the teas. While I wasn’t a big fan of the black tea version this version of their Earl Grey is quite good.
The bergamot is perfectly balanced in flavor. It doesn’t over power the grassy green flavor and leaves enough room for a slight sweet cream finish. The liquid is an amber color. Upon opening the tea you will find that the tea leaves are rolled. Almost looking more like an oolong then a green tea. (A good sign in my opinion). Then the resulting smell? Amazing. The citrus and fruit aroma given off by the tea is heavenly.
Speaking of bergamot, did you know its not an edible fruit?

I got this tea free from my consultant from my most recent Steeped Tea order :). It seems like when I spend over $50 or so she throws in a free 50 gram bag which is very nice. I was asking about a tea (Bergamont Sencha) a few weeks back and she figured this would be the closest thing currently available.
I steeped about 1.5 tsp in 175 degree F water for 2 min. I thought I may have over leafed the tea because it turned a darker yellow colour, but actually this tea is very light. I’m getting a very light vanilla (and perhaps bergamot?) taste with a mineral green tea base that has no bitterness.
Overall it’s pretty good, but to be honest if I want a green tea that has a vanilla taste I prefer Irish Eyes from Steepers (my local tea shop- nice, strong vanilla flavour) and if I want an Earl Grey Green tea I remember really liking Countess of Seville from DAVIDs (it has a good amount of bergamot). This tea is kind of neither here nor there with it’s flavouring. I will have no problem using it up, but there are better options out there.Side Note: This is the first tea I’ve had from Steeped tea that’s actually a decent price for quality. $8/50 grams or $13.50/100 grams and the leaves appear to be whole with little breakage and unravel beautifully. I’m reading up on different types of green tea and I think this is a gunpowder tea. Really nice.

I think it’s going that way for me too. I ordered some herbal fruit blends for iced tea a couple weeks ago so you’ll see some reviews of that stuff popping up, but so far there is only 2 or three teas of their’s I really like (I’m talking about in total- not from my recent order). Don’t know if I’ll be trying out too many new teas of theirs anymore…

Just keep in mind their matches are VERY expensive. I believe they charge $35 for 50 grams and $60 for 100g!
yeah but that’s the same price (maybe a little cheaper then) RLT (Red Leaf Teas)
Oh wow really? But I have heard that red leaf teas are supposed to be the creme de la creme of matchas, so maybe their cost is justified.
I know DAVIDs tea sells inexpensive matchas FYI.

Wow, the way I wrote that out almost sounds like a sales pitch. Rest assured, I’m not a Steeped Tea consultant. I’m just someone that loves free tea.
Anyways, so I tried this one finally yesterday after getting it a few weeks back. I had the afternoon off ’cause of poor weather, so I thought I should try this one out too.
I’m really unsure of what to think about it though. To me, it had your typical Earl Grey flavour, but it was QUITE a bit milder. it was more like it had a hint of the earl grey flavouring. I found the green tea base to nice as a paring. Only steeped this bad boy for 2mins! And I think doing so has prevented it from going bitter on me which I find green teas do so well!
OVerall, I’m still very undecided as to whether I like this tea or not, but I’ll try it again and update this once I decide what I think about it. As of right now, I don’t think I’d buy it myself, but I know others that would probably love it… so who knows?
